CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study

The Philippines is one of the countries recognized with diverse community, tradition and
culture. Culture is the soul of the society; without it, a city may not become a city. It partakes in building
a good nation, a wide spread of nationalism towards the people because culture is the one that make
the community. The Philippines is one of the most distinct country and is recognized to have many
different cultures on all in its 7,641 islands. Vast of traditions and beliefs exist, different dialects, arts and
festivities are celebrated that gave break and identity in each community.

The Philippines is rich with different arts and cultures beacause it has four cultural heritages.
The Asian, European, Mexican and American. The country is commonly referred to as a melting point of
the western and eastern cultures. The modern aspects of the Philippines cultural life evolved under the
foreign rule of the Spaniards, the Americans and the Japaneses; while the traditional culture of the
Philippines is heavily influenced by the indigenous people. The cultural landscape also features the
western and eastern influences and the major religions are Christianity and Islam which have played a
significant role in shaping the culture of the Philippines.

There are three main islands in the Philippines; Mindanao, the second largest is one of the most
culturally diverse where Islamic culture is evident. Visayas, primarily consisting of several islands shares
a great extension of culture and traditions of the Spanish civilization. Luzon, the largest of the three
islands has a very diverse cultural heritage and colorful traditions owing the influence to the Spanish,
American and Japanese colonizers as well as the presence of different ethnolinguistic groups.

Statement of the Problem

The Philippines is known for its rich culture and traditions and having been influenced by
different nations have helped shape our culture. Sadly though, the modern time is threatening the
things that made us Filipinos unique. Though progress is good in its own way, it should not stand in the
way of preserving what has been part of our cultural heritage and way of life.

Main Problem:

The lack of PWD supportive facilities will not encourage the community to explore the vast
culture the country offers and going through with the modern time, the lack of knowledge and interest
in the history of the Philippines art and culture makes the filipinos forget the past cultural life.

Sub Problem:

The lack of cultural based facilies in the country.

What architectural design to used.

The best site location for the project.


Significance of the Study

The study will provide benefits for the country’s social and economic standing. With the
improvement in the preservating and learning environment, it will help increase opportunities, quality
of life and the overall well-being of culture for both individuals and the community.

To the Philippines:

The proposal can serve as extension of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) to help
promote and preserve Filipino arts and culture.

To the Society:

The proposal will help provide job opportunities for the filipinos and will hep to promote the
society’s social and economic standing.

To the PWD Community:

The proposal will cater to the needs of the pwd community to help them promote their social
well-being.

Goals and Objective

Goal

The project also aims to promotes the privileges of the PWD community through means of supportive
equipment and in accordance to the accessibility law.

Objective

 The project will serve as the house of the cultural heritages as a way to pass cultural knowledge and
history to the present and incoming generations.
 The proposal aims to gather, preserve and showcase the diverse arts, cultural relics and traditions of
the Philippines.
 To provide significant knowledge to the present and incoming generations.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The scope of the proposal is only to preserve, showcase and promote the arts and cultural
heritages of the country in the regional scale. The proposal will cater to the needs of the PWD
community in the way of supportive equipments. The project is also in accordance to the accessibility
law to help in the planning and designing of the building.
Justification of the Study

The study can serve as an extension for the CCP as a tool to in helping in preserving and
promoting the countrys cultural heritages but only in the regional scale. The CCP will serve as the main
building for the cultural center and the proposal will serve under it as a sub building or a wing as a
preservation center. Though the proposals main goal is the preservation and promotion of cultural
heritages, the project also promotes the social well-being and needs of the PWD community.

Defenitions of Terms, Abbreviations and Concepts

Culture:

The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. The
customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.

Art:

The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form
such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional
power.

CCP:

The Cultural Center of the Philippines helps promote and preserve Filipino arts and culture. It
hopes to become the mecca of culture and the arts in Asia.

History:

The study of past events, particularly in human affairs. The whole series of past events
connected with someone or something.

Society:

The community of people living in a particular country or region and having shared customs,
laws, and organizations.

PWD:

Persons with Disability (PWD) are those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or
sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective
participation in society on an equal basis with others.
