Module 6. Electronic Age
(Days 1 & 2) or (Days 1 to 4)
MEMORY VERSE:

Matthew 7:7-12
“Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light,
but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.”

Enabling Outcomes: (MELC)

Based on the curriculum guide (CG), the student should be able to:
 Know the contributions of electronic age;
 Identify the role and functions of media in democratic society;
 Recognize the discoveries during electronic age.

Concepts (Generalization)
Electronic Age (1930s-1980s)

The invention ushered in the electronic age. People harnessed the power of transistors that led to the:

• transistor radio

• electronic circuits

• early computers

In this age, long distance communication became more efficient.

Transistor Radio

The first radio to be produced commercially was the Regency TR-1, which was also manufactured in
America and went on sale in November 1954. It only used four Texas instruments transistors as
transistors were then very expensive.

Television (1941)

Is a way of sending and receiving moving images and sounds over wires or through the aid by
electrical impulses. The big breakthrough in technology was the ability to send sound and pictures over
the air. The word television comes from the Greek prefix tele and the Latin word vision or “seeing from a
distance.”

Large Electronic Computers EDSAC (1949) and UNIVAC (1951)

The UNICAV I was the world’s first commercially available computer.

Chronology

1951- The first UNIVAC I was delivered on June 14, 1951 to the census bureau.

1952- It made its star-studded public debut in November 1952 on the CBS television network.

1953- 3 UNIVACs were installed and in operation

1954- The first successful industrial payroll application by General Electric.

Second Univac I

The second computer was identical except that instead of being cooled by recirculating air, it was water-
cooled by two 52 ton airconditioners located in the basement of the building. Since all computer memory
was volatile, programs as well as files were loaded before each run, so the computers were essentially
interchangeable.

8 UNIVACs were installed and in operation:

1. Bureau of the Census, Commerce Dept., Suitland, Maryland
2. Office of the Air Comptroller, USAF, Washington, D.C.
3. Army Map Service, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C.
4. New York University (for Atomic Energy Commission), NY, NY
5. University of Cal., Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, California
6. David Taylor Model Basin, U.S.N. Bureau of Ships, Maryland
7. Prudential Insurance Company
8. General Electric Company
Chronology

1956- Westinghouse Electric Company installed a UNIVAC to calculate company payrolls, sales records,
analysis of sales performance and other company business.

1958- A total of 46 UNIVAC I computers were delivered

Mainframe Computers IBM 704 (1960)

The first mass-produced computer with core memory and floating point arithmetic, whose designers
included John Backus and Gene Amdahl.

Personal Computers HewlettPackard 9100A, Apple 1 (1976)

The HP 9100A, the first marketed, mass-produced programmable calculator. In 1968 Hewlett Packard,
Palo Alto, California, introduced the programmable desk calculator, the HP 9100A
Be Active (Exercises/Activities)
Instructions: Identify and give illustration on all of the equipment people used to communicate
with each other in the Electronic Age.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.
Ignite (Evaluation)
Instructions: Write down your perception on the importance of the said discovery and its role to the society
as tool disseminates information.
IFL (Integration of Faith & Learning)
We know about Jesus because faithful men wrote down what He said. Now we can embrace those
comforting and challenging words in our own lives. Your ministry can have greater returns if you
extend it through social media.
