Is it possible to communicate without words?

I. Definition

I.1 NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

When messages or information is exchanged or communicated without using any spoken or


communicated without using any spoken or written word is known as nonverbal communication.

Nonverbal comunication ( comunition without word) is a process of comunication through sending


and receiving wordless messages

Non-verbal communication is a powerful arsenal in the face-to-face communication encounters, expressed


consciously in the presence of others and perceived either consciously or unconsciously. Much of non-verbal
communication is unintentional people are not even aware that they are sending messages. Non-verbal
communication takes place though gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, physical proximity, touching etc.
Some important definitions of non- verbal communication are as follows:

+) According to L. C. Bove and others, "Non-verbal communication is communication that takes place
through non-verbal cues: through such form of non-verbal communication as gesture, eye contact, facial
expression, clothing and space; and through the non-verbal vocal communication known as Para-language.

+) According to Lesikar and Pettit, "Nonverbal communication means all communication that occurs without
words (body movements, space, time, touch, voice patterns, color, layout, design of surroundings.)"

+) According to Himstreet and Baty, ""Non-verbal communication includes any communication occurring
without the use of words.

Examples of Nonverbal Expressions


A person who crosses the arms might be expressing defiance, but may also just be feeling cold.
We refer to a person's face for insight into a person's character.
Importance of Nonverbal Communication
 Play an important role in how people interact with one another.

Forms of Nonverbal Communication


   - Facial expressions: anger, sadness, fear, enjoyment, love, surprise, disgust, shame

 - Eye contact : maintaining, deceiving prolonged, cultural implications

 - Gesture : learned behaviors, mirroring others, cultural differences

 - Tone of voice

-Posture : confidence, shyness,, tension or relaxation, showing attentiveness to the speaker


-Sense of touch ( Haptic)

Eye contact establishes the nature of a relationship

I.1.2 Tone of voice

Tone of voice is not about what you say but how you say it. It is the attitude or emotions that
someone has in their voice. Tone of voice shows how the speaker feels about something
without using words to tell you.
When people use different tones of voice, they are expresing how they feel such as scare,
distresses, nervous, annoyed, bored, sympathetic, calm, frustrate, thoughtfull, uneasy

The pitch and timbre (distinctive tone) show the true feelings

"Oh can mean...

"Yot surprised me. "

I made a mistake."

"Youfre a pain in the neck!"

"You made mie so happy!" "I'm bored."

"I'm fasinated "

I don't understand."

Paralinguistics/Vocalics
The messages being conveyed with voice
are known as Paralinguistics.Relying on vocal
cues helps in determining the real meaning of
spoken words. The voice is an extraordinary
human instrument. People from different walks
of life recognize that the human voice
communicate something beyond language. These
effects are referred to by many impressionistic
descriptions such as tone of voice, voice quality,
manner of speaking etc. There are modifying
feature that can occur independently, such as
crying, laughing, groaning and whining.
Haptics
Haptics or tactile communication or touch is
an important form of communication in
maintaining the interpersonal relationship. Touch
help groups forms bonds and stays peaceful.
Many factors such as intentions, feelings-both
positive and negative can be conveyed with the
help of Haptics. Touch can signify consolation,
congratulations, warmth and emotion in
interpersonal communication. The type of touch
you need, tolerate, receive and initiate depends
up on the extent and the kind of touch on receives
in his family.
