Aerospace Education
The 14th annual Aerospace Education Teacher Workshop was held from 6-24 July 2009 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennes-
see. The workshop was sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and staffed by CAP Aerospace Officers. The workshop was directed by Lt.
Col. Dave Garner, DCS SER Aerospace Education (AE) and assisted by Majors Kermit Duckett, Gary Lynn and Paul Lewis, AE Directors for
Tennessee Wing. The workshop was kicked off by presentations by Maj. Gen. Richard Bowling, former National Commander, Col. James
Rushing, Southeast Region Commander, and Tennessee Wing Commander Col. Barry Melton.
Teachers received two hours of flight orientation by Tennessee Wing and visited Huntsville, Alabama’s Marshall Space Flight Center where
NASA gave the class a VIP tour. The class also had a presentation by six World War II pilots that made all of us thankful for what they had
to go through to keep us free.
This summer’s course consisted of both the basic and advanced classes
and 28 teachers from East Tennessee school systems attended. All of
the teachers signed on as CAP Aerospace Education Members and sev-
eral expressed interest in becoming regular members of CAP.
The workshop awards three hours of graduate credit to each teacher,
and it is fully funded by the Tennessee Aeronautics Commission of Tenn.
State Transportation Department. The workshop is one of the highest
rated teacher workshops held at the University of Tennessee.
