research from the Alzheimer’s Association that shows
that the flu vaccine (as well as the pneumonia vaccine)
can have real benefits in preserving our cognitive health.
Research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association
International Conference (AAIC) by researchers at The
University of Texas’ McGovern Medical School recently
showed that receiving at least one flu vaccination was
associated with a 17% reduction in Alzheimer’s incidence.

More frequent flu vaccinations were associated with an
additional 13% reduction in Alzheimer’s incidence.
Pneumonia vaccination benefits as well
Similarly, research conducted by Duke University’s
Social Science Research Institute found that receiving a
pneumonia vaccination between ages 65 and 75 reduced
the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 25-35%. The total
number of vaccinations against pneumonia and the flu
between ages 65 and 75 was also associated with a lower
risk of Alzheimer’s – although that effect was not evident
for the flu shot alone.
“While further research on this subject is necessary,
these results are encouraging,” said Lynn Mullowney
Cabrera, Alzheimer’s Association of Montana executive
director. “The reality may be that taking care of yourself
in this way – including getting vaccinations – may add up
to lower risk for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.”
