4 SAFETY
a) The Contractor shall maintain copies of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all
controlled products and shall ensure their employees are familiar with the precautions of the
MSDS regarding hazards, necessary personal protective equipment, first-aid measures and be
trained in the handling and use of these products.
b) Work gloves or rubber gloves and safety glasses shall be worn when handling the primer.
c) Protection from inhalation is required. The primer should only be used in well ventilated
areas. Personnel should wear appropriate respiratory protection in areas where vapors may
accumulate.
d) During coating application, no open flames, smoking or welding shall be allowed in the
immediate vicinity during the application of the primer.
e) To prevent contamination of the contents, primer coating containers shall not be left open,
and only authorized persons shall handle the product.
5 APPROVED MATERIALS:
Approved Manufacturers Coating Component Approved Product
Polyguard Primer Polyguard 600 Series Primer
Kemacoat Sealant Kema 250 Mastic
Kemacoat Top Coat Kema 250-12 Tape

Note: liquid epoxy coating systems shall NOT be used for thermite weld connections since they
do not adhere to the cable insulation and create the potential for a water channel to be created.
6 STORAGE AND MIXING
Primer should be stored at a temperature between 5°C and 30°C (40°F and 85°F). Maintain
primer and coating products at temperatures between 15°C to 30°C (60°F and 85°F) for at least
twenty-four (24) hours immediately prior to use. Keep primer and coating products within these
temperature ranges during application. Ensure the primer has not expired prior to use. Mix
primer prior to application.

9 COATING APPLICATION

9.1 Cutting Sealant and Top Coat

Cut Kema 250 moldable sealant and Kema 250-12 top coat into strips that have sufficient length
to cover the primed area.
9.2 Application of Primer
Coat all bare metal and existing coating a minimum of 50 mm (2 inches) around the bare area
with primer as per Picture 2. Note: the Primer must be dry prior to applying the sealant.

9.3 Application of Sealant

Cut a slit in the sealant to fit the coating around the wires. Lift the wire slightly to allow the
sealant to be placed underneath both wires. Pass the sealant from the wire side under the wire
and mould it around the thermite weld button. Press down firmly to ensure no trapped air is
present and adhesion is achieved. Apply additional pieces to cover the entire primed area.

9.4 Application of Top Coat

Apply the Kema 250-12 directly over the Kema 250 sealant layers. Be sure to mould a strip of
the Kema 250-12 around the test lead wires and sandwich the wires between each of the
Kema 250-12 layers to avoid moisture penetration. Ensure the tough tape backing on the
Kema 250-12 is facing up (away from the pipe surface). Additional pieces shall be butted up to
each other as required to ensure all sealant has been covered by the tape. Press the coating firmly
into place.
