Discussion Forum # 1 : How you would show respect for a client who is rude and disrespectful to you?

In dealing with a rude and disrespectful client, it is essential for the nurse to first take a moment,
breathe, and organize their thoughts to have an appropriate and level-headed response. Once the
patient has verbalized their complaints, a nurse must acknowledge the patient’s grievances and make
them feel heard, apologize even though the nurse is not at fault, and ask how the patient would like to
be resolved, for example, “I understand that you are angry Mr. ABC, what can I do to help you?” It is
important to realize that a rude, angry, and disrespectful patient does not want to be told that they are
incorrect, but instead they want to be heard, and thus, a nurse should learn to how be empathetic,
understanding and never to take things personally.

Discussion Forum # 2 How would you response to a patient who refuse to receive a needed blood
transfusion?

When dealing with patients who choose to refuse a much-needed blood transfusion, the nurse must
maintain rapport and understand the various personal, medical, and religious reasons that caused them
to object to this treatment method. The nurse must never engage the client in a debate that forces
them to compromise their religious beliefs and values as it might cause the patient harm and puts the
healthcare professional at an adversarial role, which makes the patient more inclined to refuse
cooperation. The nurse’s approach should be aimed towards finding an alternative approach towards
treatment and looking for modes of therapy that are within the patient’s comfort zone and religious
boundaries, and provided the patient is adequately informed regarding the risks and of a proposed
treatment and are judged competent to make healthcare decisions; we must accept and respect their
views even if it may result in a fatal outcome.
