 Late 1400s, European exploration began led by Portgues, Spanish, and Italian sailors.

 1949, Treaty of Tordesillas, a decree from Pope Alexander VI that had essentially divided the world in half
between Spanish and Portuguese.
 1518, the route to the so called Spice Islands was dominate by Portugal. Spain wanted a route on its own to
Moluccas.
 September 20,1519, The fleet set sail and crossed the stormy atlantic to reach the future site of Rio del Nero
in modern Brazil Ferdinand Magellan traded with local tribes and exchanging simple objects like metal fish
hooks and playing cards for fresh food and water.
 Winter, Magellan stayed at Puerto San Julian because of the storm.
 August, Magellan left the town after facing a mutiny of Spanish captains.
 As Magellan continued sailing, they experience a lot of things like wreckage of their ship, discovered a
three hundred fifty strait. As he explored the Pacific Ocean for how many months, they experienced hunger
and many sailors have died from it.
 After ninety-nine (99) days at sea, they land on the Mariana Isalnds of Guam, where the islanders stole one
of their boats. The island was then called Ladrones Isalnd or Island of Thieves.
 1521, The Philippine islands has been “REDISCOVERED” by Ferdinand Magellan, along with Antonio
Pigafetta.
 March 17, 1521, they sighted Samar, Magellan and his men became the first European to reach the
Philippines where they able to feast on bananas and coconuts.
 March 31, 1521 (Easter Sunday), the first catholic mass held in Limasawa, a little island South of Leyte.
 April 1, 1521, Magellan arrived in Zzubu (Cebu) and promote Peace and God to the people of the place. He
met Raja Humbaon, the local ruler, along with his family and natives.
 April 26, 1521, Zula, a principal man from the island of Mactan went to see Magellan and asked for a boat
full of men to fight the chief named Silapulapu (Lapu-lapu and Magellan agreed.
 The next day, Magellan crossed Mactan with sixty (60) men in boats. He died as he battled with armored
and armed Europeans and was shot with a poisoned arrow.
 The survivors fled with only half men left to crew ships, they burned the Concepcion and continued their
search for the Spice Island.
 They traveled to the muslim court of Brunei on Borneo and were amazed by its splendor.
 After sailing from Spain they reached their destination, the Spice Island or Maluku Islands.
 They crossed the Indian Ocean for 9 weeks sailing with their last and smallest ship, the Victoria, sailed by
Captain Juan Sebastian Elcano.
 September 1522, The famished and exhausted crew of the Victoria cast anchor at civil Spain and only 18 of
the original crews made it home out of 270 crews.
