ALL AT SEA DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN 1

A. Title of Scenario:

ALL AT SEA DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN

B. Time Context:

The problem was observed during lockdown on the pandemic COVID-19 because mariners are

experiencing cabin fever and they asked two mariners a few questions for their thoughts.

C. Main Problem:

The main problem in this case study is that most of seafarers are stuck on their ships and spend

months without shore leave and how will they survive at sea doing their job done during long

voyages while there is the pandemic COVID-19.

D. Objectives:

 To gain knowledge about what mariners should do in handling boredom and stress when

they are stuck on their ships or during in a long voyages.

 To know the priorities when it comes to managing a crew during long voyages.

 To deliver their cargoes where it is needed during the pandemic COVID-19.

 Maintain good morale and prevent boredom.

E. Areas of Considerations

- Internal / External Factors

a) Internal Factors
ALL AT SEA DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN 2

 Strength – Crews at ship will have more time with each other and bond together and it

can be a good way for them to work well in the ship as a team, not an individual.

Crews will be more patient as the experienced being stuck on ship for long time than

usual.

 Weakness – Crews will be under pressure for quite some time because they don't

know the length of time that they will spend on board. Worrying their each family

during this pandemic COVID-19 while on ship will become a struggle to their

assigned duties as they keep thinking on it. They don’t know when it’s all over, every

shift for them is mental struggle.

b) External Factors

 Strength – Crews contract will be overdue for few months and be counted as a

work pay for crews as it is not easy to transfer a new crew in this pandemic

COVID-19.

 Weakness – Crews contract overdue will not be more than 12 months and the

company will urgently transfer a new crew.

F. Courses of Actions / Strategies

 Keep the crews entertained with some activities such as deck games, quizzes, films,

competitions and training exercises.

 Keep in touch with each own family by communicating them through internet if they

have free time or off duty onboard.

 Maintain a good social interface with fellow crewmates.

 Keep yourself busy and focus on your daily routines.

 Avoid speculating too much about the issues and problems you can’t change or solve

right now.

G. Final Decision / recommendation

It is recommended for all the ship’s crew to keep entertained and gather some activities such as

social activities for them to have a better social communication with each other. Knowing

family’s condition is important for every crew’s mental health so it is recommended to

communicate with their family when free time is available. Maintain good social interface with

fellow crewmates as they are your workmate on the ship for several months. Boredom and stress

are your biggest enemy in ship so that it is recommended to keep yourself busy and focus on

your daily routines to maintain a good work. Lastly, it is highly recommended to avoid

speculating too much about the issues and problems you can’t change or solve right now because

it can affect your mental health and can ruin your work on ship.
