Pragmatic Learner

A visual learner is when one needs to see information to process it. Being an ELL learner,

visual learning is an advantage for many reasons. They depend on seeing information, seeing

examples, etc. when learning since English is not their first language. An ELL student will also

respond faster and more efficiently to visual learning, rather than auditory. Visuals for an ELL

student could also reduce their anxiety while increasing their comprehension. Since they are a

new student, in a new environment and learning new material in English, they are nervous and

overwhelmed. Visuals will decrease their anxiety, making it easier for them to understand and

learn. As a teacher, you can use videos, PowerPoints, demonstrations, etc. to ensure that your

visual learner is adapting accordingly.

An applied learner learns through engagement in direct application of skills. This type of

learning style can benefit an ELL student because connecting a lesson with real-life situations,

examples, etc. is important. When students can tie in real-life to what they are being taught in the

classroom, it will shape their thinking and capabilities in ways they did not realize. As a teacher,

you can use examples, videos, books, fieldtrips, etc. to teach applied learning.
A spatial learner is one who prefers learning through assembling, drawing, etc. A more

hands-on approach to learning new material. This can benefit an ELL learner because having

them learn through diagrams, drawing, etc. can help them express themselves through models

and they may learn more efficiently, and quickly. They can also use a video or directions to

build, create or model material or items; proving that they understood or showing formative

assessment.

A social learner learns through interaction with peers and or teachers. They enjoy

working with others on classwork, projects, etc. This can be beneficial for ELL and all students

in general because they can collaborate ideas. This can help them take different approaches with

learning new material and sculpts conceptual thinking and learning how to work with other

individuals and respecting their ideas and ways of completing work. This can help an ELL

learner because while they are sharing ideas and work, listening to their peers converse can help

them learn the language and understand. Seeing them work on the material ties back to visual

learning, they can see how others approach their work and learn by watching.

A pragmatic learner is systematic and prefers to follow a set of directions or guidelines

when competing work or a task. This is a good way to learn through activities, solving problems,

etc. This is beneficial for students because when following directions, step-by-step instructions

or guidelines, this guides them in solving or completing the task asked of them and allows is

disciplinary, in a good way. It can be disciplinary to students since following directions leads to

the end result, If they do not follow the directions then they will struggle to complete the task.
