Becoming a School Principal Learning to lead, Leading to learn, Sarah E. fiarman

describes her first few years as a school principal committed to enacting a powerful vision

of leading and learning. Drawing thoughtfully on the literature of school reform and

change leadership, Sarah E. Fiarman engages readers in a lively, frank, and revealing

conversation about building the vision and capacity to provide effective instruction for all

students and intensely personal process of learning to lead.

8. Nilai Pengetahuan / Pengajaran

After, I went through of the book, I found that the value of this book is that it steps

courageously but modestly into gap between theory and practice. The vision of leadership

here was an ambitious one that stands apart from the practices of leaders. I can say that,

the fundamentals of leadership practice that Sarah E. Fiarman develops in this book are

learning and improvement. Learning is learning, she argued whether applied to adults or

students; the fundamental task of leaders is to enable learning. In learning she argued in
 many different contexts, is a fundamentally developmental practice. As my reading I can

conclude there were three themes in this book:

1. Leadership as learning requires the capability to listen, empathize and reflect back,

even when what you are hearing and seeing threatens your identity as a leader.

2. Leadership as learning requires the cultivation of trust, which in turn requires the

cultivation of predictable and safe learning environment in which it is permissible to make

and correct mistakes.

3. Leaders as learners have a responsibility to take care of themselves in order to provide

the support they must give to others.

9. Aplikasi Ilmu Dalam Organisasi / P&P

Becoming a school principal, learning to lead, leading to learn, I found several tips in

learning to lead such as:

1. Get comfortable being both hotshot and humble

2. Understand other people’s relationship to authority.

3. Understand the invisible work of meetings.

4. Engage teachers in collaborative learning.

5. Get close to the action.

6. Internal accountability will get you further than external accountability.

7. Find the right balance.

8. Recognize the challenges teacher leaders face.

9. Resist the temptation to make the work easier.
