Activity 1:

Composition of Cells
Name: JOHN PATRICK QUINES
Year and Section: BSN 2-A
1. Discuss the functions of the parts of the cell.

 Cell membrane- The cell membrane provides protection to the cell it is semi permeable,
or it only allows certain substances to pass through it. It also provides fixed environment
inside the cell.
 Cytoplasm- The cytoplasm is the skeleton of the cell or it protects the genetic material of
the cell and the cell organelles from damages because of collision to other cells.
 Cell Organelles- The cell organelles carry out essential functions that are necessary for
the survival of cells.
a).Endoplasmic Reticulum- It’s role is calcium storage, protein synthesis and lipid
metabolism, so here is where the proteins and lipids are made
* Rough ER-It is the site of protein synthesis in this part of endoplasmic reticulum its
main function is to produce proteins
*Smooth ER- It synthesizes lipids and steroids, in this site the lipids are created or
produced
b), Ribosomes- The ribosomes decodes the message and the formation of peptide bonds,
c.) Golgi Apparatus- Its function is packaging proteins into vesicle prior to secretion so
the golgi apparatus are like the vehicles of the proteins for them to be transported.
d.) Mitochondria- The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell or they generate most
of the chemical energy that is needed to power the cell’s biochemical reaction,
mitochondria is where the energy stored in the cells.
e.) Lysosomes- the lysosomes are the suicidal bag of the cell or they are the one that is
responsible in removing or destroying foreign micro organisms.
f.) Centrioles-The centrioles is the blue print of the cell because it makes the cells shape
g.) Cilia-The cilia helps the cell to move
h.) Nucleus- The nucleus is the control center of the cell it contains the genetic material,
it coordinates cell activities like protein synthesis and cell division.
2. Differentiate prokaryotic from eukaryotic cells.
* The prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack membrane bound structure
prokaryotes don’t have organelles therefore they do not have nucleus but, instead, generally have
a single chromosome a piece of circular, double-stranded DNA located in an area of
the cell called the nucleoid, these are the cell that can found in the bacteria while the eukaryotic
cells are cells that contain a nucleus and organelles, and are enclosed by a plasma membrane.
These cell are found in fungi, protozoa, plants and animals.
