MICROBIOLOGY and PARASITOLOGY
(4 units/ 3hrs lec and 3hrs lab)

COURSE OUTLINE: This course introduces the students to the microbial world consisting of bacteria, viruses,
prions, algae, fungi and parasites. The focus is usually on medically important pathogens but other micro-
organisms are also discussed. The unit integrates aspects of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology,
genetics, biotechnology, and environmental sciences. Laboratory exercises introduce the student to basic
techniques used in microbiology such as microscopy, staining techniques, cultivation and diagnostic methods.
The laboratory exercises reinforce topics introduced in lectures.

INC rating will be given in instances when a student has not complied with any of the class requirements. A student
is given one (1) year to comply with the missed requirement. Non-compliance will convert the grade 5.0.
DRP rating will be given in instances with the student has not incurred 20% or more of the allowed absences
(54hours or 18weeks).
Students with a grade of 4.1-5.0 (Conditional Failure) are given one (1) week to pass the removal exam. Failure to
take or pass the removal exam will automatically convert the conditional failure grade to 5.0 failed).

5
POLICIES

1. Classroom Preparations and Procedures

a. Attendance in class meetings is very important. Tardiness by more than thirty (30) minutes after the
class has started or leaving the class thirty (30) minutes or earlier than its official time will be
reckoned as an absence. A maximum of ten (10) hours of absence during the entire semester is
allowed. Students who will accumulate more than prescribe number of hours will be dropped from the
subject roll. It has to be noted that absence from class, for whatever reason, results in a deficiency in
the activities missed in that particular session.
b. Unnecessary noise during class sessions is discouraged. Mobile phones and digital devices must be
kept in silent mode while inside the classroom. As a rule, the use of mobile phones and digital devices
during class sessions is strongly prohibited. Laptops, iPads and similar devices must be used only for
class purposes.
c. Courtesy must be observed in the classroom at all times. Students are encouraged to listen and pay
attention to the teacher or fellow classmates during class presentations. In case of personal necessity or
an emergency, student must properly inform the teacher and wait for his/her approval before leaving
the classroom.
d. Personal responsibility is encouraged among students. Each student is expected to be always prepared
in coming to the class. Failure to do assign task, for whatever reason, would mean a deficiency.
e. The classroom is our second home. Every student is expected to help in maintaining its cleanliness and
orderliness.
f. As part of measure to promote equal academic opportunity, students who are PWDs, pregnant women
and citizens shall be afforded reasonable consideration in the performance of activities and compliance
of required outputs.
2. Policies on course requirements.
a. Students are expected to submit all the requirements for the subject.
b. Projects, assessments, culminating activities, and etc. must be submitted as scheduled.
c. Late submission would mean demerit.
d. Failure to submit would mean a grade of 5.0 for projects, assessment, culminating activities, and etc.
