Lesson Nº3 Comparative Adjectives (compare two objects, people, and so on)

Adjectives are words to describe people, animals, places, objects, and things.
Adjectives have three forms: positive, comparative, and superlative.
Examples: beautiful, fast, ancient, small. Rules to form comparative adjectives.

1. One-syllable Adjectives
Form the comparative forms of a one-syllable adjective by adding –er + than.
Examples:
long – longer tall – taller small –smaller

If the one-syllable adjective ends with an e, just add –r for the comparative form.
Examples:
cute – cuter large – larger nice–nicer.

Add –er to adjectives that end in consonant-vowel-consonant and double the

last consonant.
Examples:
big – bigger hot – hotter

2. Two-syllable Adjectives
With most two-syllable adjectives, you form the comparative with more + than….
Examples:
honest – more honest than famous – more famous than

If the two-syllable adjectives ends with –y, change the y to i and add –er for the

comparative form.
Examples:
happy – happier crazy –  crazier

Two-syllable adjectives ending in –er, –le, or –ow take –er to form the comparative

forms.
Examples:
narrow – narrower gentle – gentler noble– nobler

3. Three or More Syllables Adjectives

Add more to adjectives that has 3 or more syllables.
Examples:
expensive – more expensive difficult – more difficult

4. Irregular Adjectives
good – better bad – worse far – farther
 little – les many – more

NOTE: When comparative adjectives are used, the word “THAN” appears after the adjective.
