ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT
River current turbine is one of the decentralized sustainable energy technologies. This technology
potentially assists in delivering electricity for the community inaccessible by the centralized power system. In order
to mount the turbine into river, the utilization of pontoon can be an alternative option. This study discusses the
utilization of pontoon as a mounting device for a turbine unit, including the utilization of pontoon in several river
turbine applications, ranging from experimental to commercialization stage, and the benefits and drawback of the
pontoon’s utilization. A mathematical model as a preliminary design calculation is also presented. Literature reviews
are utilized in conducting this study.

sustainable resources have been implemented and
commercialized in order to provide a power for a
region inaccessible to the centralized power system.
One of the concepts is a river current
turbine. The current turbine systems would
potentially require little or no civil work as no
elevation required, making this system more simply
constructed (Khan 2007) and the location more
extensively available than the conventional water
turbine.

IV. MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR

PRELIMINARY PONTOON DESIGN
The following discusses a calculation model

high energy flux. This is because pontoon enables the
turbine operating in near surface. The energy flux in
a river channel is higher near the surface than at river
bed (Khan 2007). This can be explained that the flow
in river bed is considerably affected by the sheer
stress of the bed. It results in small velocity, thus
reducing the flux. The stress also causes velocity
gradient (velocity in-uniform in upright direction
relative to the flow orientation). The gradient velocity
results in in-uniform force acting on the turbine,

In preliminary design a pontoon, some
parameters required to be considered are the weight
