Case Study: A Nurse researcher was assigned to conduct a study about experiences of abandoned

children in an orphanage. To ensure that she is getting the right information from the right
participants, the Nurse Researcher is planning to get children ages 12 to 16 as her participants.
Her choice of the said age group is based on the concept of developmental age where
accordingly, these age groups are already in the formal operational stage of cognitive
development, stage 4 of moral development, and at the adolescent stage of psycho-social
development, where they are already capable of deeply understanding the concepts of life, love,
family, and survival.
Questions:
1. If you are the Nurse Researcher, what ethical concerns should you look into to
ensure that your research study will meet the ethical standards and requirements in
conducting studies like this. Give at least three ethical issues that needed to be
address and explain why you think it is important to be address.
1. First, that I would address is the Informed consent from the Institution (orphanage) and
Participation Authorization from orphans (like assent). Before the procedure it important to give
awareness on the participants to give information on the process of the procedure and how it is
done. Second, Confidentiality Procedures that corresponds to Data Privacy Act of 2012. It is
important that gathered information is hereby protected, managed correctly and prohibited for
exploitations. It is important that participants identity is unknown for their safety and security.
Lastly, RESPECT – Culture and perspective is relative. Knowing that they came from different
family and raised differently and some are having some fear and trauma. That is why it is
important to always avoid negative judgement and to not give false assurance to the participants.
Knowing that they are an orphan and you want to help them.

2. If you are a member of the Ethics Review Committee, will you allow/approve the
conduct of the study? Why? Support your decision by using the different principles
and concepts in ethical standards for research.
2. Yes, as long as they had met ethical standards and didn’t violate any. Concerning the success
of the study, researcher visualized getting the right information from the right participants even
though his study may be a little bit off and sensitive. As said, they had picked capable age group
participants. Also, as participants open up their experiences it may be of help to themselves in
terms of sharing. After the study is completed and eventually successful then it may be a lot of
help to orphans who have the same situations. In short, “RISK AND BENEFIT RATIO IS
ACCEPTABLE”.
