#5 SOLUTION (Use of Deductive Reasoning to Establish a Conjecture)

Let n represent the original number.
Multiply the number by 6: 6n
Add 10 to the product: 6n + 10
Divide the sum by 2: 6n +2 10 = 3n+5
Subtract 5: 3n+5 - 5 = 3n
We started with n and ended with 3n. The procedure given in this example produces a number
that is three (3) time the original number.

#6 SOLUTION (Determine types of Reasoning)

A. This argument has a specific case of general assumption conclusion. Hence, making it
an example of deductive reasoning.
B. This argument yields a conclusion based on specific examples, so when the conclusion
is based on specific examples it falls under inductive reasoning.

#7 SOLUTION (Solve a Logic Puzzle)

From clue 1, Ashley is neither the president nor the treasurer of their class. In the following
chart, In the following chart, write X1 (which stands for “ruled out by clue 1”) in the President
and Treasurer columns of Ashley’s row.

From clue 2, Ashley is not the secretary. We know from clue 1 that the president is not the
youngest, and from clue 2 that Brianna and the secretary are the youngest members of the

Also we know from clues 1 and 2 that Ashley is not the secretary, because she is older than
the treasurer. Write an X2 in the Secretary column of Ashley’s row.
