NUMBER OF DAYS: 4 Days

BACKGROUND:

In the previous module, you have learned about the different ways of separating
mixtures. Mixtures can be separated using the different methods. Among these
methods are sieving, evaporation, decantation, filtration, winnowing, sifting,
handpicking, threshing distillation and mechanical separation.

1. Sieving - is a process by which fine particles are separated from bigger

particles.
2. Evaporation - is a process of changing liquid into water vapor.
3. Decantation - the process of settling heavy solid substances and pouring off
the liquid.
4. Filtration - the process of separating fine solid substances from liquid using a
strainer.
5. Winnowing - is used to separate heavier and lighter components of a mixture by
wind or by blowing air. This method is commonly used by farmers to
separate lighter husk particles from heavier seeds of grain.
6. Sifting - is used to separate smaller solid particles from larger solid particles.
7. Handpicking - is the simplest method of separation of substances. For example;
pebbles, broken grains and insects are separated from rice, wheat
and pulses; by handpicking
8. Threshing is used for separating seeds from the harvested stalks. It involves
beating the dry stalks to shake off the dried grains. Traditionally,
threshing was done by hand, however today threshing machines are
used to separate large quantities quickly.

1
9. Distillation - is a widely used method for separating mixtures based on
differences in the conditions required to change the phase of
components of the mixture.
To separate a mixture of liquids, the liquid can be heated to force
components, which have different boiling points, into the gas phase.
10. Mechanical separation - is probably the easiest process of separating the
components of a mixture. You simply remove the components one by
one. Separating the ingredients of a fruit salad with a fork is an
example of this.

The benefits of the above-mentioned separating mixtures are observed in the

community like in construction sites, refilling stations, school, farm and in the market.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS:

Module 7 contains fourteen (14) pages which provides a variety of interesting

activities for individual practice and an answer sheet. The following are important
reminders in using this module:

1. Use this module with care. Do not write anything on each page of the module.
Use a separate sheet of paper for your answers to the different activities or
tasks.
2. Read carefully the Guide Card before proceeding to the next activities.
3. Read carefully the direction/instruction of each activity before doing the task.
4. Finish the first activity before doing the next one.
5. Return the module on the agreed time to your teacher or adviser after
answering all the activities.

GUIDE CARD 1
Lesson 1 & 2: Separating Mixtures in Construction Site

PROCESS:

When you have large quantities of materials to sort and the different particles
have different sizes, you can sieve the mixture. The smaller particles will fall through
the openings in the sieve, while the larger particles stay behind.

BENEFITS:

In construction workers sieving is very important to separate big rocks to sand. It

is also important to filter the sand used for concreting and other building work

GUIDE CARD 2
Lesson 3 & 4: Separating Mixtures in Refilling Station

PROCESS:

Filtration is the process of separating suspended solid matter from a liquid, by

causing the latter to pass through the pores of some substance, called a filter. The
liquid which has passed through the filter is called the filtrate.

Distillation is the process of separating the components or substances from a

liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation.

Evaporation is a technique used to separate out homogeneous mixtures where

there are one or more dissolved salts. The method drives off the liquid components
from the solid components. The process typically involves heating the mixture until
no more liquid remains.

BENEFITS:

Water refilling stations are facilities that provide clean and potable water that
benefit the community. Different forms of separating mixtures can be observed in
water refilling stations through filtration, distillation, and evaporation.
