GUIDELINES IMPLEMENTATION OF
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING (IT) DURING
COVID-19
EC110
DIPLOMA IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
0
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Industrial Training (IT) is a compulsory requirement for students in certain programs at all levels of
higher education in Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) aimed to strengthen the competencies
required. IT course provides students with learning opportunities in the real working environment.
IT exposes students to real-life experiences of the civil engineering works and get involved in Civil
Engineering projects before graduation. The student MUST complete at least eighteen (18) weeks of
IT within semester six (6) for the awarding of Diploma in Civil Engineering. The technical and non-
technical course outcomes that will be assessed and evaluated through the industrial training.
2.0 SCOPE OF IT
The scope of Industrial Training (IT) encompasses of the following activities:
a. Appreciation of client’s requirements
b. Attending site visits
c. Interpretation of construction drawings
d. Interpretation of contract specification and involvement in project management
e. Discussion with visiting lecturer
f. Preparation of report
Other activities relevant to the training, as directed by the supervisor that are appropriate for civil
engineering trainee can also be included.
CO2 : Describe the scientific skills in design and quality delivery of relevant project. (C3)
CO3 : Able to conduct investigation in tasks related to industrial training. (P5)
CO4 : Perform good communication with fellow workers and supervisors in issues related
to projects undertaken. (A2)
CO1 and CO3 address psychomotor (P), CO2 addresses cognitive (C) while CO4, CO5 and CO6
address affective (A) domains.
1
4.0 ASSESSMENT
The assessment of IT and the percentage of the domain skills acquired are distributed as follows:
From these distributions of an assessments, 50% psychomotor skill (face to face) must be evaluated
by Industry and Faculty supervisors. In view of the Covid-19 issue and the Movement Control Order
(MCO) continues until 28th April 2020, the evaluation of the psychomotor skills will be affected.
Therefore, to meet the ETAC requirements with at least 50% of the psychomotor skills to be
achieved, below are the plans that have been made to ensure that this requirement can be fulfilled:
= 45 days
Due to the COVID-19 issues, FCE has revised the process of IT to suit with the current situation while
fulfilling the ETAC requirements and at the same time to ensure the safety and health of the students
when conducting IT course.
2
There are three situations that the students undergoing for IT have to face due to COVID-19 issues
which are:
1. Students had been terminated from the current organization due to MCO (refer to Appendix
B).
2. Students still can proceed IT at the current organization and the students have to work from
home (WFH) with Industry Supervisor supervision from 15.4.2020 until 3.6.2020 before the
students resume with MAXIMUM up to three (3) days a week at the office or site on 4.6.2020
until 5.8.2020 (refer to Appendix C).
3. Students still can proceed IT at the current organization but organization do not capable to
assist students in WFH concept. With mutual consent from industry, Faculty Supervisor will
take the responsibility to make WFH with student. Students have to work from home (WFH)
with faculty Supervisor supervision from 15.4.2020 until 3.6.2020 before the students resume
with MAXIMUM up to three (3) days a week at the office or site on 4.6.2020 until 5.8.2020
(refer to Appendix C).
During the report duty, students are required to bring the following documents:
a. IT Report Duty Verification Letter
b. IT Logbook consist of IT Guidelines / Rules and Regulations (student should record their daily
activities in the logbook and verify by supervisor in charge at least once per week)
IT Report Duty Verification Letter should be sent / posted to the IT Committee within ONE (1) WEEK
after report duty to the organization. Fail to do so, the student is deemed not to report duty to the
3
organization and will be subject to disciplinary action. If there are changes to address training,
students are required to complete the Current Location Information Form and send the Form to IT
Committee immediately.
If the industry is unable to continue / resume student IT after the MCO, students will need to find new
IT placements as soon as possible and will need to report to the new organization by 4th June 2020.
However, if failure to do so, students will need to suspend IT and recoup this course next semester.
6.3 Leave
Students are not permitted to take leave while undergoing IT except with the approval of the relevant
organization. However, any leave for official / personal business purposes must obtain an approval
from the organization and inform the faculty / IT Committee. In emergency cases, the student must
notify the organization immediately and obtain written permission from the organization. Only
medical certificates (MC) that certified by government medical officer and also adopted by UiTM will
be accepted. Medical certificate issued by a private clinic in more than TWO (2) days will not be
accepted without confirmation by the Government hospital. Copies of the certificate or declaration
shall be posted in the Logbook.
However, during work from home (WFH) if students are unwell, or they have positive COVID 19,
students should seek treatment from nearby hospitals / clinics and please include MC / health reports
from the relevant hospital / clinic in the log book. It is important to inform the faculty supervisor if
students are patient of COVID19.
4
6.5 Supervision of Industrial Training
The student will be supervised by an industrial supervisor (preferably a registered professional
engineer), who will monitor his/her progress throughout the training. The faculty will also check up
on the trainees by contacting them and/or their supervisors.
On WFH period, industry or faculty supervisor need to give a tasks such as case
study/scenario/calculation/design/drawing or other related job under civil engineering scope to the
students. To ensure that students complete assigned tasks, industry or faculty supervisors need to
make periodic reviews on a daily basis in various ways such as WhatsApp’s / telegram / google meet /
google classroom / video call and other related methods. Students should record each of these
conversations / discussions in the logbook.
5
d. Under MCO period, faculty supervisors need to make periodic reviews on a daily basis on
student’s tasks in various ways such as WhatsApp’s / telegram / google meet / google
classroom / video call and other related methods.
e. Faculty supervisors may also seek assistance from industry supervisors in relation to tasks
assigned to students if the industry supervisor is not able to supervise students during the
MCO. Two-way communication/ discussions between faculty and industry supervisors are
preferable
NOTE: This mark sheet must be submitted to the Faculty Supervisor / Academic Advisor and should
be included in the official envelope sticker and organization stamp.
Throughout the WFH, students will need to record all assignments given in the form of pictures /
drawings / worksheets / etc. In addition, evidence of the review made by the industry / faculty
supervisor on the tasks given should also be recorded. The process of reviewing tasks can be done
in a variety of ways such as WhatsApp’s / telegram / google meet / google classroom / zoom or
whatever way that feels right between the two parties.
