Gallium-67
Introduction
2

Gallium-67
Is a photon radiotracer used for
scintigraphy in the form of salts such as
nitrate and citrate. When it is
administered, it binds to plasma proteins.
Especially to transferrin and lactoferrin
and particularly likes bonding with
inflammation sites.
Radionuclide
Profile
3

Half Life Critical Organ Type of radiation emitted

Gallium 67’s half life is 78 The “target organ” or the Gallium 67 emits gamma
hours. Which means that it organ that will recieve the ray radiation.
takes 78 hours before its largest radiation dose is the
concentration is reduced by colon. Although normal
half distribution is in the liver,
spleen and bone marrow
Uses
4

● diagnosing of sarcoidosis
● diagnosis of tuberculosis
● diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis
● diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma
● localization of deep vein thrombosis
● localization of interstitial nephritis
Techniques
5

Gallium 67 is given intravenously at 111-222 MBq and imaging is

done every 24, 48 and 72 hours.
Techniques

The study may consist of SPECT and SPECT-CT imaging but

have been replaced by 18-F-FDG-PET-CT imaging which
provides an earlier scan, better image quality and SUV
quantification.

Criticism
6

Gallium 67 is a valuable tool for diagnosing certain diseases

like sarcoidosis and tuberculosis and localization of fever of
unknown origin and deep vein thrombosis. It provides a better
evaluation of spinal infection, and with the utilization of
gallium citrate, it shows an earlier negative scan than that of
technetium used in bone scanning. However, it has poor
image quality than most scans, has a higher radiation dose
and cannot differentiate between osteomyelitis and cellulitis
