 Discuss the Internet, including origins, the three generations of the web, and the most
common uses.
- The Internet is a large global network connecting smaller networks worldwide. It is often
referred to as the Information Superhighway because it connects millions of people
across the globe.
- The three generations of the web are the:
Web 1.0 – linking existing information.
Web 2.0 – more dynamic content creation and social interaction.
Web 3.0 – computer-generated information requiring less human interaction.
- The most common uses of the Internet are the following:
Communication – the most popular Internet activity.
Shopping – one of the fastest-growing activities.
Searching – access libraries and local, national and international news.
Education – “e-learning” or taking online courses from almost any location.
Entertainment – it includes music, movies, magazines, and computer games.

 Describe how to access the Internet. What are the providers? Define browsers and discuss
URLs, HTML, JavaScript, AJAX, Applets, and mobile browsers.
- The most common way to access the Internet is through a provider or host computer
Internet Service Provider (ISPs) which is already connected to the Internet to furnish a
pathway for other users.
- Most common used ISPs use telephone lines, cable, and/or wireless connections. Popular
Commercial Internet Service Providers are Verizon, Comcast, Sprint, T-Mobile, and
AT&T.
- Browsers allow you to explore or surf the web navigate, search for information and
communicate using the web.
- URL or Uniform Resource Locator connects us to other resources It is the address and
contain two parts the protocol and the domain name. The rules for exchanging data
between computers is the protocol while domain name tells us the specific address where
the resource is located.
- Hypertext Markup Language or also known as HTML is the standard mark up language
for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. Web browsrs receive HTML
documents from a wwe server or local storage and render the documents into multimedia
wrb pages.
- JavaScript is an Object-oriented programming language/scripting language, smaller and
simpler set of commands which are embedded in HTML.
- AJAX (Asynchronous Java Script and XML) it is a mew technique for creating better,
faster, and more interactive web applications with the help of XML, HTML, CSS,
JavaScript.
- Applets are used to present animation, display graphics and provide interactive games
- Mobile Browsers are designed to run on mobile devices. It contains special navigation
tools for convenience to pinch and stretch.
 What are web utilities? Discuss plug-ins, filters, file transfer utilities, and Internet security
suites.
- Web utilities are specialized utility programs that make using the Internet and the web
easier and safer.
- Plug-ins are programs that automatically start and operate as part of your browser. It
provides an enhanced browsing experience by enabling special file formats.
- Filters are programs that block access to selected sites and can set time limits. It can
monitor total time spent on the Internet and at individual web sites.
- File Transfer Utilities are programs that help you upload and download files to and from
the Internet.
- Internet Security Suites are the collection of utility programs designed to maintain your
security and privacy while you are on the web.

 Discuss Internet communications, including client-based and web-based email, instant and
text messaging, social networking, blogs, microblogs, webcasts, and wikis.
- Internet communication is referred to as sharing of information, ideas, or simply words
over the World Wide Web or the Internet.
- Client-based e-mail requires installation of programs on your computer. Examples are the
Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail.
- Web-based e-mail doesn’t require program on your computer. It can access from any
computer. Examples are Google Gmail, Microsoft Hotmail and Yahoo.
- Instant messaging is the extension of e-mail that provides direct, live communication
between two or more people. It supports live communication between friends. Most
instant messaging programs include videoconferencing features, file sharing, and remote
assistance.
- Text messaging or also known as texting is the sending of short electronic messages
between mobile devices. It is also called SMS (short message service) is a process of
sending short electronic messages typically less than 160 characters.
- Social Networking is the connection of individuals to one another.
- Blogs or Web logs are personal news pages that are date/time-stamped and arranged with
the most recent items shown first.
- Microblogs, unlike traditional blogs, use only short sentences that take only a few
seconds to write. Twitter is the most popular microblogging site.
- Webcasts are streaming technology for live broadcast of audio and video while podcast is
an audio and video files that can be downloaded to your computer or media player.
- Wiki is a specially designed web site that allows visitors to edit the contents and support
collaborative writings. The most common example of wiki is the Wikipedia.

 Define search engine tools including search services. Discuss search engines and specialized
search engines. Describe how to evaluate the content of a web site.
- Search Engine Tools are are large, spider(software programs) create databases of web
pages that help searchers find specific information on any given subject. You type in a
keyword or phrase and the search engine retrieves pages that correspond to your search
query.
- Search services help you locate information. They maintain the database that helps you
get where you want.
- Search Engines are specialized programs to help locate information.
- Specialized Search Engines focus on subject-specific websites.
- Many information is located on the web site therefore evaluating its content is a must.
Content evaluation is the act of making sure through checking the authority, accuracy,
objectivity, and currency of the information gathered.
 Describe electronic commerce, including business-to-consumer, consumer-to-consumer, and
business-to-business e-commerce, and security.
- Electronic Commerce or the E-Commerce is the buying and selling over the Internet.
There are three basic types of electronic commerce namely:
B2C (Business-to-Consumer) – is the fastest growing type of e-commerce. It involves the
sale of a product or service to the general public or end user.
C2C (Consumer-to-Consumer) – involves individuals selling to another individual.
B2B (Business-to-Business) – involves the sale of a product or service from one business to
another.
- Security. Its objective is to establish rules and measures to use against attacks over the
Internet. The Internet representsan insecure channel for exchanging information, which
leads to a high risk of intrusion or fraud such as phishing, online viruses, trojans, worms
and many more.

 What is cloud computing? Describe the three basic components of cloud computing.
- Cloud Computing uses the Internet and the web to shift many computer activities from a
user’s computer to computers on the Internet. It frees end-users from owning,
maintaining, and storing software programs and data. The three basic components of
cloud computing are:
Clients (end-users) – These are the corporations and end-users who want access to data,
programs, and storage anywhere and anytime a connection to the Internet is available.
Service Providers- are the organizations that are willing to provide access to software and
storage.
Internet Connectivity – the speed and reliability of the user’s access to the Internet and its
capability to provide safe and reliable transmission of data and programs.
