AutoCarry
available for
D11R Carrydozers.
(AAF00001 - up)

AutoCarry – More Productivity, Less effort.

AutoCarry boosts the D11R Carrydozer’s productivity by
automatically controlling blade height during the carry portion of
the dozing cycle. Consistent, optimum blade loads are achieved
each pass by integrating power train output, ground speed, track
slip, and tractor attitude information. This operator assist feature
keeps the D11R CD performing consistently closer to 100%
efficiency over an entire workday.
• Increases Productivity
- Expert operator increased productivity by 7%.
- Less experienced operators showed up to 15% productivity increases.
• Reduces Fatigue
- Operator only makes steering corrections while AutoCarry
is activated.
- Performance tests demonstrated only 2 dozer adjustments per
minute with AutoCarry vs. 65 per minute without.
• Consistent Loads in Reduced Visibility
- Consistent loads regardless of time of day or weather conditions.
• Enhances Operator Performance
- Complete dozing cycle simplified when used with other Auto Blade
Assist functions.
• Trains Operators
- All operator skill levels can consistently achieve optimum blade loads.
- Teaches new operators how to achieve and maintain the best loads.
• Retrofit Kits
- Easily retrofitted on Carrydozers with AAF serial prefixes.

How does AutoCarry work?
Cat track-type tractors are designed to perform a wide variety
of jobs in a multitude of applications. Each model has specific
design characteristics for peak performance in the most demanding
applications. For production dozing, key performance factors are:
• Power Train Output
• Track Slip
• Ground Speed
• Tractor Attitude
• Blade Load
A track-type tractor’s peak efficiency is achieved by using as
much tractive effort as possible, while steadily moving the blade
load forward without interruption to forward progress. During a
typical dozing cycle, an operator must make constant adjustments
to the dozer blade to maintain a productive blade load. A change in
operating conditions can reduce the operator’s ability to maintain
this optimum load. AutoCarry provides the operator with a method
of automatically controlling the blade load near the machines
maximum tractive effort. By constantly monitoring, calculating
and integrating the key performance factors, AutoCarry provides
an operator the ability to keep the Carrydozer consistently operating
close to its peak performance.

Increased Productivity
Performance tests were conducted by an expert operator over a
six day period. The test comprised of three 10-hour shifts with
AutoCarry, and three 10-hour shifts without. Productivity increased
7% when AutoCarry was enabled. Other tests have been performed
with less experienced operators showing as much as a 15% increase
in productivity.

2
Keep in mind, the Carrydozer performance characteristics are
still the same. AutoCarry merely ensures the operator is getting
the most out of the performance characteristics designed into
the machine. As the Carrydozer will be operated closer to its
maximum capabilities, costs per hour may change. For instance,
fuel burned per hour may increase versus a machine previously
operated with smaller blade loads. Fuel rates will decrease on
tractors that previously had big blade loads but excessive track
slip. A tractor previously operated with excessive track slip will
now see increased shoe life. Ultimately, the D11R CD will operate
at a lower cost per unit of material moved.

Reduced Fatigue
As can be imagined, an operator begins a shift fresh and fully alert,
keeping the tractor operating near its peak performance levels.
As the shift progresses, the ability of the operator to continuously
keep the tractor operating at this peak level becomes more difficult
as fatigue sets in. During controlled performance tests operators
averaged 65 adjustments per minute without AutoCarry. With
AutoCarry enabled, the same operators averaged only 2 adjustments
per minute, greatly reducing fatigue.

New Operators, Operator Training and Visibility

AutoCarry can help train operators new to the D11R CD as well
as experienced operators on the look, sound and feel (power train
output, blade load, ground speed, track slip and attitude) of the
most productive blade loads. AutoCarry also reduces skill required
to productively operate the Carrydozer, making the operator new
to the Carrydozer more productive faster. When visibility is
limited, AutoCarry will provide consistent blade loads whether
it’s day, night, or inclement weather.

AutoCarry Operation Overview

Figure 1 Figure 2

AutoCarry is enabled using the D11R CD Keypad (Figure 1).

Once the feature is armed, the operator changes dozer functions
by pressing the mode select button switch located on the left side
of the blade control handle (Figure 2). AutoCarry is only active
during the carry segment of the dozing cycle while the tractor is
in first gear and a minimum ground speed is present. AutoCarry
can always be overridden by pushing the right button on the dozer
handle or by manually adjusting the blade up or down.

Figure 3

4
While AutoCarry is active, the operator can also control the amount
of material moved during the carry segment within a range. These
blade adjustments can be made using the blade load selector dial
(Figure 3). The dial is divided by color into three regions with the
dark green region representing the most common operating point
defined as 100% blade load factor. From production studies,
this dark green range represents the optimal setting to operate
AutoCarry. However, material composition will dictate the blade
load factor required. Turning the dial counterclockwise decreases
the blade load factor, typically used in more severe, inconsistent
materials. Turning the dial clockwise will increase the blade load
factor. Increasing the blade load factor will allow greater blade
loads best used in less demanding, consistent materials. The blade
load factor dial can be adjusted from 80% to 105%.

A Production Dozing Cycle Made Simpler: AutoCarry used with

Automatic Blade Assist (ABA) features
Operators quickly adapt to AutoCarry because of its integration
into the sequence of all other ABA features.

Sequence of a dozing cycle using AutoCarry with ABA features:

1. The operator activates and sets the ABA features AutoPitch,

AutoSpread, AutoReturn, and AutoShift.
a. AutoPitch – Sets the blade pitch angle for loading, carrying,
spreading and returning.
b. AutoSpread – Raises the blade at a selectable rate during the
spread/dump portion of the cycle.
c. AutoReturn – Sets the blade to the starting pitch and height
to begin the next dozing pass. Begins when the machine is
shifted into reverse.
d. AutoShift – Shifts the tractor from 1st forward to 2nd reverse
when tractor has a directional change from forward to
reverse. A directional change from reverse to forward
will automatically shift the tractor from 2nd reverse to
1st forward.
2. Operator shifts the tractor into 1st gear forward and enables
AutoCarry on the Keypad (Figure 1).

5
3. Operator loads the blade to approximately 80% and pushes
the mode select button, the yellow button on the left hand
side of the dozer handle. This is when AutoCarry takes over.
The operator only makes steering corrections. The operator
has the option at any time to override AutoCarry; which may
be necessary if inconsistent material is encountered.
4. As the tractor reaches the end of the pass, the operator pushes
the mode select button again to begin spreading and dumping
the material at a selected rate.
5. When the material has been spread, the operator shifts into
reverse activating AutoReturn and AutoShift.
6. When the tractor reaches the beginning of the next cycle, the
Carrydozer is set to load the blade again and begin taking
advantage of AutoCarry.
