Conflict: Suicide

(INTRO) Suicide is the act of taking one’s life intentionally. This definition has been
expanded to describe the range of notions and behaviors that are exhibited by individuals
considering suicide. Suicidal ideation involves having notions of killing oneself or of being
dead. Suicidal intent involves having a plan for how to kill oneself and try to carry that plan
out. Suicidal behavior includes all actions related to suicide. A suicide attempt occurs when
an individual intends to take his or her own life, but does not die, such as gathering bottles of
pills (without taking them) or tying a noose (without using it). A suicide completion occurs
when an individual intends to take his or her own life and dies as a result.

(CONFLICT) Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs throughout the lifespan. Based on
the suicide data collected by World Health Organization (WHO), there was Close to 800 000
people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. As a college
student, we often oppressed by academic pressure or even from various aspects such as
relationship problems, financial difficulties, or even we put too high demand on ourselves in
everything. If we heap up all this pressure day by day until it reaches a certain level which
will affect our daily life. This is the reason why most of the people around the world can
easily get pessimistic. Generally, people with negative emotions tends to live in agony as they
may suffer from depression, autism, schizophrenia and even commit suicide just because they
do not want to face the reality.

(ARTICLE)Here is an example of article of a college student who committed suicide due to

pressure from work and studies. In 17th of September 2017, a female student from Tunku
Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) committed suicide in the early morning.
According to Sin Chew, the 20-year-old student named Wong, had packed her belongings and
wrote a note for her mother, mentioned that the pressure from life and studies was too much
for her. The stress from her work and never-ending problems in life, studies and work have
caused her to be depressed and lost hope in life. Her urge to commit suicide grew stronger.

2
She even claimed herself to be a ‘loser’, and that ‘leaving’ is the best solution for her. After
leaving the note, she jumped off her condominium in Setapak at 4am. Wong’s mother broke
down in tears upon receiving the news.

(OPINION)Throughout this article, I realized that life was so fragile that we do not have the
all-around ability to protect it. If I were the student in this article, I will not be giving up my
life so easily. After all, it is the parents who give us life and bring us to this world being sad
and la tortura. As the maxim goes: “Every cloud has a silver lining”. Even if sometimes we
have hardship in our lives, we must think it optimistically, there must have something that we
can learn from it and benefit ourselves. We can make it lemonade if life gives you lemon.

The conflict occurs when the perception of suicide between personal and society is different.
For an individual, people often see themselves as a burden to others or feel worthless due to
the overwhelming emotional burden they are carrying within. when they feel they have lost
all hope and do not feel able to change that, it can overshadow all of the good things in their
life, making suicide seem like a viable option. This type of rhetoric is a common warning
sign of suicide. For society, we believed that there have better alternatives way to resolves the
stress. Parents are the who give us life and bring us to this world. Once they heard the death
news, their heart will be broken into millions of pieces as we are also parts of theirs’ blood
and flesh.

No matter what conflicts we face in our life, we need to understand that everything will be all
right by using strategies for resolving the conflicts. There are two approaches which deal with
conflicts analytically by identifying beforehand the value elements and facts. The two
approaches are Fraenkel approach and Coomb approach. An individual is implied to think

3
rationally and logically before he makes a value judgement. Individual is required to study
the effects and give the priority to result when acting based on the judgement and decision
made.

(CHOICE OF ACTION) In dealing with pressures, we have four choices of actions to be

considerate. Firstly, we can manage stress with a healthy lifestyle. We must get enough sleep.
If you don’t get enough sleep, you may be too tired to cope with stress. Also, stress can
prevent you from sleeping well or may keep you awake. If this happens to you, try doing
relaxing activities before bedtime. Consider meditation, deep breathing, or listening to
soothing music before you go to sleep. We can also make time for ourselves. In today’s
world, there is often too much to do in too little time. It may seem hard to make time for
ourselves. But try to spend just a few minutes each day doing something you enjoy. This can
improve the quality of your life and your mental outlook. Also, you’ll be more productive
when handling your day-to-day duties. And you’ll be in a better frame of mind to cope with
stress.

To effectively combat stress, you need to activate your body’s natural relaxation response.
Techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, meditation, and yoga can help. The right
technique that fits your lifestyle is able to focus your mind to elicit the relaxation
response. Although there are many approaches to solve the problems, but each approach has
different effects which contributes to different results. Deep breathing is a simple yet
powerful relaxation technique. It’s easy to learn, can be practiced almost anywhere, and
provides a quick way to get your stress levels in check. All you really need is a few minutes
and a place to sit quietly or stretch out. This activates your relaxation response, reducing your
heart rate and blood pressure and lowering stress levels.

The third choice is seeking a psychiatrist. A psychologist is someone who studies mental

4
processes and human behavior by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to
one another and the environment. If we suffer from any negative emotions, we can visit the
psychiatrist to help us to free from the situation we are suffering in. As psychiatrist can help
us to interpret and analyze our situation precisely, they are usually our best advisor to help us
to deal with psychological problems. The effect of third choice is that we can resolve our
stress and pressure effectively. This is due to the fact that psychologists have the ability to
analysis our problems so that they can give us the right medicine to settle our problems. The
result for third action is that we can finally find a way out of our negative emotions or to
relieve our pressure with a better way.

Finally, the last choice is giving vent to parents and friends the feelings. Normally, most of
the people will choose to speak out their feelings to the person closest to them such as family
and friends. This is due to the reason that sometimes our friends or our family members may
have experienced the same thing as us before and they have their own way to resolve it. So,
they may give us some useful advises or ways to overcome the problems that we are facing
right now. Moreover, we will also feel more comfortable to talk our problems with our trusted
one as they are our best listener and it is easier for us and them to understand each other. The
effect for final choice is that we may not control by the pressure and will not have a strong
feeling towards the negative emotions as we had relieved some of the stress and pressure
which are suppress by us. For the final action, its result is that we will not be having autism
anymore in which it will not makes us to lock ourselves in the room and eventually make us
not to isolated from the world

(JUDGEMENT)Among these four choices of action, seeking a psychiatrist and give vent to
parents and friends the feelings give better results after comparing all of them. In summary,
giving vent to parents and friends the feelings are the best judgement if compared with
seeking for a psychiatrist.

5
CONCLUSION) Effective and evidence-based interventions can be implemented at
population, sub-population and individual levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts.
