Position: Superintendent of Pub. Inst.

Term: 4 Years Maia Espinoza Party: N/A

The Superintendent of Public Instruction is the chief executive officer of the State Board of
Education. It is the only state executive office elected as a nonpartisan position. In
Washington, the OSPI is the primary agency that oversees public K-12 education. It is their
job to manage resources and tools for schools so that all students receive a proper
education. Some of the regular duties of the office include approval and accreditation of
programs, appointment of state and local funds, and certification of teaching personnel.

What are your thoughts and plans on the Sex Ed Bill?

Stop Forced Sex Ed: The recently passed Sex Ed policy takes away local control and exposes our children to
inappropriate material.

What are some things we can look forward to if you’re elected?

School that works: The existing model hasn’t had a system update since the Industrial Era! Today we have both parents
that work and classrooms have 15-30 students. It’s too many students for teachers to get to. We need a school system
refresh.

Essential Skills: We are constantly bombarded with new info, yet a majority of students and adults can’t separate fact
from opinion. Learning essential skills promotes mutual respect inside and outside the classroom. We need to ensure
every student receives these skills.

Since most schools are doing online because of COVID-19, what are your plans on integrating all students and
faculty members back to campus?

We need to focus on the safety and health of our students. That means if the cases of COVID-19 are rising then, we
will keep our students’ home in a safe environment. If the number of cases are going down then, we will send each
grade level back to school separately.

With everything going on with the Black Lives Matter movement, what actions do you plan on making, to
ensure the safety and comfort of students and teachers of color in Washington?

Thank for the question, that’s a very hot topic in society. And our plan is to educate society about the importance of
racial differences and how we all fit together as one. We plan on giving schools tools and resources to help educate
students that have difficulties understanding the differences between races, and they’ll be consequences for their
negative actions taken against others. We feel if everyone is educated and on the same page, we can make schools safer
and a better place for teachers and students to learn, respect, and Insure everyone’s safety.
