Eight Stages of Life

In 1959,Erickson proposed a theory of psychologic development that reflects

cultural and societal influences.
-The major focus of development in this theory is on an individual’s ego
structure, or sense of self, especially in response to the ways in
which society shapes its development.
- The task of middle adulthood is resolving the conflict between generativity
and stagnation. During older adulthood the developmental task needing
resolution is balancing the search for integrity and wholeness with a sense of
despair

Peck (1968) expanded the eighth stage, ego integrity versus

despair, into three stages:
1. ego differentiation versus work
2. body transcendence versus body preoccupation,
3. ego transcendence versus ego preoccupation
