SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

I OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
a. Identify the radius and center of a circle.
b. Compute for the equation of the circle given the center and the radius in
standard and general form.
c. Differentiate the standard and general form of the equation of the circle.

II SUBJECT MATTER
a. Topic: The Equation of a Circle
b. Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Module Grade 10, page 256-258
c. Materials: Projector and Laptop
d. Time: 30 minutes

III PROCEDURE (4As)

Daily Routine
Teacher tells students to stand up and pray and ask them to clean up and
remove the unnecessary things under the desks. Afterwards, the teacher greets the
students a good morning.
Preparatory Activities
Review
The teacher asks the students to have a recapitulation of the previous lesson.
Motivation
Let the students describe the image below.

A B

Based from the student’s responses, introduce the lesson for the day.
A. Activity
 Divide the class into two then ask for a representative from each group.
 The representative of Group 1 will plot a point at the origin from given Cartesian
Coordinate Plane. Then draw point B where B is a moving point at a distance of
12 from point A.
 Otherwise, the representative of Group 2 will plot a point A (4, -1) from given
Cartesian Coordinate Plane. Then draw point B where B is a moving point at a
distance of 7 from point A.
B. Analysis
 Let the students analyze the figure that they have formed from their drawings.
 Using the given information upon the teacher’s guidance, let the students identify
the center and the radius of the circle.
 Emphasize the relationship between the radius and the center of the circle.

C. Abstraction
 Introduce the two forms of the equation of a Circle:

 STANDARD FORM:
( x−h)2 +( y−k )2=r 2
where:
(h, k) is the center of the circle
r is the radius of the circle

x 2+ y 2=r 2
center is at the origin
 GENERAL FORM: x 2+ y 2+ Ax+ By +C=0
 Using the Standard Form, the equation of the circle can be determined if the
radius and center is given:
o Write the equation of a circle with center at the origin and a radius
of 12 units.
x 2+ y 2=r 2
x 2+ y 2=122
x 2+ y 2=144
o Write the equation of a circle with center at (4, -1) and a radius of 7
units.
( x−h)2 +( y−k )2=r 2
( x−4)2+( y +1)2=72
( x−4)2+( y +1)2=49
o The equation of a circle in standard form can be expressed in
general form when it is expanded. Taking the latter as an example:
( x−4)2+( y +1)2=49
( x 2−8 x +16 ) +( y 2+ 2 y +1)=49
x 2−8 x +16+ y 2 +2 y+1=49
x 2+ y 2−8 x+ 2 y +17=49
x 2+ y 2−8 x+ 2 y +17−49=0
x 2+ y 2−8 x+ 2 y −32=0

D. Application
 Board Work
o Write the equation of a circle with center at (-5, 3) and a radius of
12 units in standard and general form.
o Write the equation of a circle with center at (-4, -9) and a radius of 8
units in standard and general form.

IV EVALUATION
Write the equation of each of the following circles given the center and the radius
in standard form.
Center Radius
1. Origin 11 units
2. (2, 6) 9 units
3. (-7, 2) 15 units

Write each equation of a circle in general form. Show your solutions completely.

4. ( x−2 )2 + ( y−4 )2 =495. ( x +4 )2 +( y−9)2=144

V ASSIGNMENT
In one half crosswise, graph the following equations:
1. ( x−6)2 +( y−1)2=81
2. ( x +8)2+( y +7)2=225
