2. THE STRUCTURE AND LOCATION

Eco Protection Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Plot No. 943, 54th Street, TVS Colony,

Annanagar West Extn., Chennai, Proposed Construction of Lifting Station 2 at

Sanjeeva Nagar, Tadepalligudem Municipality, Tadepalligudem, W.G.District, A.P.

3. SUB SOIL INVESTIGATION

3.1. FIELD INVESTIGATION PROCEDURE

The following methods

.
have been adopted for sub-soil investigations
.

two bore holes soil investigation bore hole of 150 mm diameter was Proposed

Construction of Lifting Station 2 at Sanjeeva Nagar, Tadepalligudem Municipality,

Tadepalligudem, W.G.District, A.P.

3.1.1. BORINGS:

Boring was done using a combination of shell and auger methods depending upon the

type of strata met within the borehole. Bore hole of 150 mm diameter was drilled to facilitate

collection of disturbed soil sample and to conduct Standard Penetration Test (SPT). The drill

rods will be standard "A" type as specified by IS: 1892-1979. The bore hole was stabilized

with casing pipe.

3.1.2. UNDISTURBED AND DISTURBED SOIL SAMPLING

Undisturbed soil samples were collected using thin walled sampling tubes and split

spoon samplers as per the procedure given in IS: 2132-1972 at desired levels in the bore hole

(clayey strata) to determine the compressibility and shear strength of the soil.

Number of disturbed but representative soil samples were collected from the auger

cuttings and borings for identification and for conducting laboratory tests.
3.1.3. STANDARD PEl'\TfRATIOX ITST'S (SPI)

Standard Penetration T~LS (SPT) was conducted at ev~- 1.5 meters up 10 I LO

meters depth in one bore hole. These tests were carried out as pet' IS·Jl3 I-198l. _-\

strata is considered to be hard/re~ when the Standard Penetration Test ,-arue. ~ " "3.5
greater than 50 as per IS:2132-1981 clause 333.

3.1.4. DEPTH OF BORINGS

The one bore hole was drilled up to a depth of 11.0 meters below the exisriag

ground level. If the penetration of the spoon is less than 300 mm for 50 blows. t:1.! ~

value is wTinen as >50

3.2. LOG OF BORES

All the results obtained from the field operation are shown in log bore hoie (Figure 1 ).

4. LABORATORY TESTS

Indices tests such as natural moisture conten4 liquid limit and plastic limit and

unit weight were conducted on clayey soils to identify and establish the consistency of

these soils. Grain size analysis tests were conducted on sandy soils for classification of

soil. Unconfined compressive strength tests on SPT clayey soils and direct shear tests

on sandy soils were conducted to know the shear parameters of the soils. All the results

obtained are presented in table 1.

5. sun SOIL PROFILE

The sub soil profiles at the bore holes locations, based on the identification of
soil samples and the results of the tests are indicated in figure l .
BORE HOLE NO.I
Depth Visual identification of soil and IS soil Recorded:
BelowGL classification N Values
0.0-3.50 Filling soil --
3.50-4.50 Yellowish clay --
4.50-7.0 Gravel 46-50
7.0-11.0 Coarse sand 50
The ground water level was not encountered within the borehole depth.

6. SELECTION OF TYPE OF FOUNDATION AND BEARING CAPACITY

Eco Protection Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Plot No. 943, 54th Street, TVS
Colony, Annanagar West Extn., Chennai, Proposed Construction of Lifting Station 2 at
Sanjeeva Nagar, Tadepalligudem Municipality, Tadepalligudem, W.G.District, A .P.
The soil from 0.0m to 3.50m is filling soil, from 3.50m to 4.50m is yellowish clay,
from 4.50m to 7.0m is gravel and from 7.0m to 1 I.Om is coarse sand. Open foundation
in the form of spread/raft foundation is suitable. It should rests on sound strata of
adequate bearing capacity and safe from settlement considerations.
• It should have adequate embedded length so as resist the overturning moments
due to horizontal forces.
The allowable bearing capacity of shallow foundation can be calculated
using the equation as given in IS: 6403-1981.
The net ultimate bearing capacity for strip footing shall be modified to take into
account, the shape of the footing, inclination of loading, depth of embedment and. effect
of water table. The modified bearing capacity formulae are given as under:
a) for general shear failure gnu = cNcscdcic + q(Nq -1) Sqdqiq + ½ ByNys.ydyiy W'
b) for local shear failure qnu=2/3 cN'c Scdcic+q(N' q-1) Sqdqiq + ½ ByN'ySydyiyW'
c) Computation of safe load carrying capacity of bored cast in situe pile foundation:
Using static formula: Qu = Qsu + Qbu

7. RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on field and laboratory test results on soil samples collected from the bore holes,

the following recommendations are made

l) Open foundation in the fonn of spread/raft foundation is suitable.

2) The SBC of the soil is 10.0 t/m2 at a depth of 3.2m b.g.l. and provide sand
cushion of thickness 0.20m below P.C.C.
3) The SBC of the soil is 35.0 t/m2 at a depth of 5.0m b.g.l.
