Violence against Women and Children

(Hannah B. Grepo)

Violence nowadays are rampant all over the world. This violence doesn’t
only involve men but also women. According to statistics about 1 in 3 (35%) of
women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate
partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Only a few have
the guts to fight back. For some reasons that they wanted to save their family
from being broken but mostly because they didn’t know how fight their rights.
The Seminar on violence against women wakes our senses and imparted us
knowledge that we can use as a student and especially as a women. This topic
which was discussed by Atty. Glenda F. Gumba-Almelor includes the law
pertaining to the case that can be charge on the liable person. RA 9262 or Anti-
Violence against women and children act of 2004 is the law which protects the
women and children against any act of violence such as; Physical violence, sexual
violence, psychological violence and economic abuse. Any person that committed
violence against women or children can be charged guilty of this law.
Imprisonment, fine in the amount of not less than P100,000.00 and mandatory
psychological counseling are the penalties imposed by this law. Attorney also
discussed the kinds of protection orders that can be filed. The very first protection
order is the Barangay Protection Order which is effective for 15 days. Any citizen
who has a personal knowledge of the circumstance involving the commission of
the crime can file a complaint under RA 9262. We can filed this case in the family
court or any regional trial court.
Women are known being weak in our society and for that reason others
mistreated us. We are taken advantage not only by men but also women itself.
But there is no enough reason to hurt anybody. The government makes their way
to prevent or lessen the violence against women and it is now our part to use this
law. Do not just sit and witness any violence without doing anything. Make a
move, initiate and speak out. If there is a thing that makes this topic significant for
me is that we as a women already have our weapon to fight this circumstance all
we need to do is to stand and fight our rights. Makes the liable person suffer the
consequence of what he did. Don’t let them treat us as weaklings because we are
more than of what they think we are. We can do more and have justice of what
we deserve.
