making this research. For all the readers we dedicate this also for you all and

we hope that this research will be a big help for your future needs.

Introduction

Research Question:

How does malnutrition affect a student’s body and academic performance?

In this generation that we’re currently living in, we can observe that

there are many people are affected with different diseases and we can

conclude that it’s more dominant now than before because of the fact that

some diseases spreads more faster caused by our poor environment today
3

unlike the earlier times. These illnesses extend itself in its own ways just

like inheriting or it does affect you since you’re malnourished caused by

your unhealthy habits and it probably can cause your body to be affected

with many diseases. Until such time comes, you realize that yourself also is

the one to be blamed, since, at first, it’s your choice to be in that situation.

But do you ever thought how hard it is when malnutrition strikes a student’s

body and academic performance?

Malnutrition is defined as a category of diseases that includes under-

nutrition and over-nutrition- eating a diet in which nutrients are not enough

or are too much such that it causes health problems [ CITATION Wes16 \l 1033 ] . In

determining the numbers of malnourished we can classify the students who

are overweight, normal, and underweight in order to conclude the students

who needs more development and reversion so that they can reach or go

back to the normal state of their body and so that their academic

performance will not be affected. When it comes to the student’s academic

performance, malnutrition may affect their concentration since they’re

inactive, low-energized, and absent in mind. This may happen caused by

their poor immune system and lack of nutrients in the body. It may worsen if

they catch illnesses then they’ll be hospitalized and the worst, they’ll end up
4

not attending to school but when we anticipate, there future really does

depend on their bodies potential.

Review of Related Literature

According to BMC Nutrition (2017), they found that stunted

growth and low body weight, both indicators of malnutrition, were

associated with lower academic performance, while wasting had no direct

correlation.

On the effects, it has been revealed that malnutrition had a negative

impact on the academic performance and growth and development rate of

children. Malnutrition is generally defined as a chronic condition which is a

consequence of over- or under-consumption of any or several essential

macros- or micronutrients relative to the individual's physiological and

pathological requirements according to Ecker and Nene (2012).

Moyses and Collares (1997) conceived hunger as the basic need for

food which, when not fulfilled, reduces the availability of any human

being for both the daily and the intellectual activities. However, once that

need is fulfilled, all its negative effects cease, without damages. Malnutrition

occurs when hunger goes on in such intensity and for such a long period of

time that they start to interfere in the body’s energy supply.

5

Dobbing (1972) reported that only in serious malnutrition cases, there

are changes in the central nervous system which is responsible for the

intellectual functions of the individuals, the brains anatomy test revealed

reduction of weight, size, volume, number of cells, amount of myelin, and so

on in some individuals. This study therefore examines the effective of

malnutrition on students’ academic performance, to provide possible

solutions to problems facing students and make recommendations.

Recent studies have demonstrated that nutrition affects students’

thinking skills, behavior, and health, all factors that impact academic

performance. Research suggests that diets high in trans and saturated fats

can negatively impact learning and memory, nutritional deficiencies early in

life can affect the cognitive development of school-aged children, and access

to nutrition improves students’ cognition, concentration, and energy

levels(Wilder Research,2014).

Methodology

In order to evaluate on how does malnutrition affect a student’s body

and academic performance, we’ve tested the ideas of the learners of Grade

9-Chastity that comprises twenty-three boys and twenty girls that has an age

range of fourteen to fifteen years old. The students will just put a check
6

symbol whether their answer is yes or no on the first up to the fourth item,

when they reach the fifth and the last item they’ll just simply put a check

symbol again if their answer is either overweight, normal, or underweight.

Kindly refer to the analysis section for the interpretation of data then refer as

well to the appendix section for the clean or answered sample

questionnaires.

Example Survey Question:

What is your weight classification or Body Mass Index (BMI)?

OVERWEIGHT NORMAL UNDERWEIGHT
