Week 7

Topic: SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS

Learning Target/s: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze the forms and
functions of social organizations.

This chapter introduces the concepts of social institution, which refers to a system of standardized
patterns of behavior and norms toward the preservation of social order. Social institutions play a huge role in
society as there are various social institutions that organize and define social life. Understanding social
institutions can help us explain how social order is attained or maintained as well as gain insights into human
behavior.

Day 1
Topic: Educational Institutions

From the moment a child is born, his or her education begins. At first, education is an informal process
in which an infant watches others and imitates them. As the infant grows into a young child, the process of
education becomes more formal through play dates and preschool. Once in grade school, academic lessons
become the focus of education as a child moves through the school system. But even then, education is about
much more than the simple learning of facts.
Education is a social institution through which a society’s children are taught basic academic
knowledge, learning skills, and cultural norms. Every nation in the world is equipped with some form of
education system, though those systems vary greatly. The major factors affecting education systems are the
resources and money that are utilized to support those systems in different nations. As you might expect, a
country’s wealth has much to do with the amount of money spent on education. Countries that do not have
such basic amenities as running water are unable to support robust education systems or, in many cases, any
formal schooling at all.

Religion and Belief System

Belief is a state of the mind when we consider something true even though we are not 100% sure or
able to prove it. Everybody has beliefs about life and the world they experience. Mutually supportive beliefs
may form belief systems, which may be religious, philosophical or ideological.

Religions are belief systems that relate humanity to spirituality. The following definition from Wikipedia
provides a good overview of the many dimensions of religion: Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief
systems, and worldviews that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values.

ACTIVITY 21: Journal Writing

Write an essay based on this question, “How Religious I am?” Your essay should express your beliefs
about your religion. You can also express your doubts and questions which you think religion can answer, and
those things which your religion has no definite answer.

Day 2
Topic: Health Institutions and Mass Media

The institution of Medicine is responsible for defining and treating physical and mental illnesses among
members of a society. The goal of a society’s medical establishment is to promote Health, the total well-being
of its people. The nature of both health and medicine in a given society are culturally determined.
Today, during the pandemic, the mass media is our channel of communication and the health
institutions use this to channel important information for our safety and health.
There’s a hand outs attached in this LAS. Kindly read the lesson about “Health Institutions and Mass
Media”, after that answer the activity below.

ACTIVITY 22: Mass Media Addiction

Complete the table below. How many hours in a day do you spend for:
Watching television (movies, news)?

Listening to the radio?

Listening to music?

Using mobile phones (checking and sending

messages, calling, surfing the internet)?

The internet?

Economic Institutions

The economy is the social institution responsible for the production and distribution of goods. The
two dominant economic systems in the world are capitalism, under which resources and means of production
are privately owned, and socialism, a system under which those resources are owned by the society as a
whole.

ACTIVITY 23:
You are to report on the famous individuals who succeeded in life – local and international. The report
should include the current wealth of the individual, his or her humble beginning. Then, you are required to
explain whether this success can be replicated by others. You have to emphasize the role of economic
structures and existing inequalities in allowing or disallowing each individual to escape from the cycle of
poverty.
Write your report inside the box.
