Some basic ways to find story ideas
1. Be Curious: Observe and think critically about everything
you encounter.

2. Check your Surroundings: Where ever you go, be aware

of your surroundings.

3. Check local bulletin boards: All sorts of possible story

ideas can be found there.

4. Localize a national story: National news items often have

a local angle, especially political stories that put people on
opposing sides.
5. Use Google and other Search Engines: Do a search on
an interesting topic.

6. Ask People Question: When meeting new individuals,

set out to learn as many things about them as possible.

7. Listen to anyone and everyone: Just listening to

people’s views can lead to stories.

8. Collect Story ideas overtime and write them down in

a journal: Always be collecting ideas, and then
brainstorm with them.
Covering Story Ideas
Some times editor’s idea for the direction of a story
might not exactly match what is actually happening on
scene. This is normal, but always make to relay the
situation back so that your supervisors are not left
expecting something they will never see.

Story idea generation happens the same way for new

media across all platforms, for all media. Editors or
producers try to determine just what will be the news
of the day.
Get prepared with the necessary information, and
know whom to talk to keep an open mind, and let a
story unfold the way it really is.

Approach every story with an attitude of heading out

into the unknown, to uncover what is really there, and
be truthful about the events being covered.
Covering a Beat
Newspapers often cover beats, or specific areas in which they have
some history, expertise, and all other contact list.

Sometimes beat reporting can include something as simple as

covering the local board of supervisors or regional tourism.
Information/Data driven
Data driven story telling does not have to be all charts,
bar graph, and data bases. A story can start with data
and then move in whatever direction the data leads.

Part of thinking about data storytelling is figuring out

how to categorize the data itself, so that it can be
easily understood.
Wireframing a Story
Whether putting together a fiction or non fiction story,
there is a handy method to keep ideas in order that also
provides a foolproof way to write a script or develop a
storyline for a film. It is not a detailed structure like a
story arc; its more of a sketch or wireframe that
indicates where a story can or should go.
