MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

PRELIM EXAMINATION

NAME: ENGR. DHENIL MANGUBAT

YR & SECTION: DATE:

I. PROBLEM SOLVING: Solve the following problem. Show your solution. Box your answer and
round off your answer to the nearest tenths. (5 pts each)

1. The triangular block shown in Fig. P-010 is subjected to the loads P = 1600 lb. and F = 600 lb. If
AB = 8 in. and BC = 6 in., resolve each load into components normal and tangential to AC.

2. The contact point between the femur and the tibia bones of the leg is at A. If a vertical force of
175lb is applied at this point, determine the components along x and y axes. Note that the y
component represents the normal force on the load bearing region of the bones. Both x and y
components of this force cause synovial fluid to be squeezed out of the bearing space.

3. Two horses on opposite banks of canal pull a barge moving parallel to the banks by means of
two horizontal ropes. The tension in these ropes are 200lb and 240lb while the total angle
between them is 60 degrees. Find the resultant pull on the barge and the angle between each
rope and the sides of the canal. Also given the tension on the rope, if the allowable area of each
rope is 5m2, what is the average normal stress on each rope in psi.
4. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force shown in the figure below.

5. Determine the resultant moment produced by the forces about point O.

6. Determine the average normal stress in each of the 20-mm diameter bars of the truss. Set P =
40KN. If the average normal stress in each of the 20-mmdiameter bars is not allowed to exceed
150 MPa, determine the maximum force P that can be applied to joint C.

7. A hollow steel tube with an inside diameter of 100 mm must carry a tensile load of 400 kN.
Determine the outside diameter of the tube if the stress is limited to 120 MN/m2.
8. A composite bar consists of an aluminum section rigidly fastened between bronze section and
steel section as shown. Axial load as applied at the position indicated. Determine the stress in
each section.

9. Find the average normal stresses on members AB, BE, and EG, if the area of all members is
1200mm2.

10. A frame structure is shown below. The links connected below is a bar with a 30mm by 60mm in
section. Find the Allowable lad P that can be applied so that the stresses will not exceed 100MPa
in tension or 80Mpa in compression.

11. When the hand is holding the 5-lb stone, the humerus H, assumed to be smooth, exerts normal
forces and on the radius C and ulna A, respectively, as shown. If the smallest cross-sectional area
of the ligament at B is 0.30 in2, determine the greatest average tensile stress to which it is
subjected.

12. A strain gage located at C on the surface of bone AB indicates that the average normal stress in
the bone is 3.80 MPa when the bone is subjected to two 1200-N forces as shown. Assuming the
cross section of the bone at C to be annular and knowing that its outer diameter is 25 mm,
determine the inner diameter of the bone’s cross section at C.

II. ENUMERATION: Enumerate the following.

1. State the four Axioms of mechanics. (10 pts.)

2. Enumerate 10 types of forces that is present in a force system. (10 pts.)
3. Three types of parallel forces. (5pts)
4. The 5 common bodily contact in a free body diagram. (5pts)

III. IDENTIFICATION: Identify the following terminologies or statement. (2 pts each)

1. Forces that are developed by free bodies upon another bodies.
2. Forces that tend to move towards or shorten the body.
3. Forces that are lying in the same line of action.
4. Two equal and opposite parallel forces that act at diametrically opposite points on a
body to cause it to rotate around a point or an axis through its center.
5. A pivot point or edge about which objects are free to rotate.
6. An alternative name for moment of force.
7. In a system of forces, it is the single force equivalent of the entire system. When the
resultant of a system of forces is zero, the system is in equilibrium
8. Motion in a straight line. An example is when a car is driving on a straight road.
9. The product of force and distance: the distance an object moves in the direction of
force. Work is not done if the force exerted on a body fails to move that body. Work,
like energy, is measured in units of ergs, joules, or foot-pounds.
10. Deals with the effect and condition of forces causes acceleration or motion on rigid
bodies.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your
paths” (Proverbs 3: 5-6).
