AAS:

A= 2.01 x 10-2 C + 8.98 x 10-3

      0.185 =2.01 x 10-2C +8.98 x 10-3

C=8.76 ppm -----> concentration of Ca from 500 mL flask

(8.76 mg Ca / L solution) (0.500 L solution) = 4.38 mg Ca

(4.38 mg Ca / 0.02401 g) = (X / 2.6081 g)

X= 476 mg Ca

% error= (|400 -476| / 400) x 100= 19%

Titration:

MCa= 0.0082 M Ca2+----> Calculation Ca2+ in 1 L flask

(0.0082 mol Ca2+ / 1 L) (0.100 L) =0.00082 moles Ca2+

(0.00082 mol Ca2+ / 0.1524 g) = (X / 2.6081 g) = 0.0140 moles Ca2+ in tablet

0.0140 moles Ca2+(40.08 g/1 mol) (1000 mg/1 g) = 561.12 mg Ca2+

% error = (|400-561| / 400) x 100=40% error

% difference = (|titration-AAS| / 476) x 100

% difference = (|561-476| / 476) x 100=17.9 % difference

IV. Discussion: The percent error for AAS was only 19%, showing a successful result for the

experiment. The percent error for titration was 40%, showing more errors for this

method. The process of titrating showed a larger percent error than AAS. This could be

due to over titrating, going over the fiducial line when pouring the solution in, spilling

some of the tablet powder, and even poor quantitative transfer of solutions. Performing

the atomic absorption spectroscopy method was easier and led to a lower percent error.

The way the crushed TUMS were collected could have caused a lot of the error in this

experiment. For the next experiment, the collection of the crushed TUMS could be better

organized so that Ca2+ does not mix with the TUMS and cause the calmagite to say the

solution was already standardized. I liked this experiment because it made me think of
the people that take TUMS often, how many they should take, and how often they should

be taking it due to the concentration of the substance.
