3 Operating Principle
3.1 Basic switching logic
3.1.1 Overview
The extremely important property of High Speed Transfer Device is that it switches with the
least time, and it won’t bring the user any danger during switching to ensure the continuous operation
of the device, thus reducing power failure time and saving expensive cost for the restart.

After the feeder in operation of variable auxiliary power is cut off, it will form feedback voltage
because of mechanical inertia and motor coasting. At this moment the busbar voltage is the feedback
voltage that is composed by many generators, which is called residual voltage. The following chart
is the vector change locus diagram of 300MW unit of 6kV busbar residual voltage.

The device needs to select the optimal switching time

according to the state of electric power system. Rapid switching
is the shortest and most optimal switching time, but if the power
grid doesn’t allow this switching when start, then it can only
select other slower switching time. In the left side of FIG., VD is
busbar voltage, VS is the voltage of the second feeder, and △U
is the voltage difference of busbar voltage and voltage of the
second feeder. If the main feeder in operation and the second
feeder have the same phase when it normally operates and the
voltage phase endpoint is A, then the residual voltage phase
endpoint will move from A to B as the residual voltage curve after
the busbar has power failure. If successful transfer in A-B, the busbar is then supplied further by the
second feeder, then it can not only ensure the safety of the generator, but also not make the rotation
rate reduce too much, which is the so-called “rapid switching”.

After passing point B, the BC is the unsafe area which doesn’t allow switching. From point C to
CD, make real-time tracing of the change of frequency difference and phase difference, and capture
the phase coincidence of feedback voltage and the second feeder voltage, thus realizing the
switching of C-D, which is “synchronous switching”.

The switching that is achieved when busbar voltage attenuates to 20% - 40% of rated voltage
is usually called the “residual voltage switching”. Residual voltage switching can ensure the motor
safety, but because the power off time is too long, motor startup success, automatic starting time will
be restricted.

When occur several faults within a short time, it can have automatic switching if there are not
any switchings within the set time. This time control switching mode is only as standby switching
mode.

3.1.2 Rapid switching

Rapid switching is available for switching startup moment when phase difference, frequency
difference of busbar voltage and voltage of the second feeder are in the range of setting value. The
High Speed Transfer Device will simultaneously give closing and opening order.

3.1.3 Synchronous switching

When rapid switching failling closing, the device will automatically enter synchronous switching

8 NARI Technology Development Co., Ltd.

function. The device will automatically trace voltage difference du , frequency difference dFR, angular
d (dFR )
phase difference d and slip difference of frequency difference of voltage of the second
dt
feeder and busbar residual voltage. When du , dFR , dФ enters the allowable range of synchronous
switching, The High Speed Transfer Device will simultaneously give closing order. For successful
transfer, it requires proper setting t dq the setting operation time of the closing circuit breaker of the
second feeder.

3.1.4 Residual voltage switching

Adopt residual voltage switching when busbar voltage attenuates to 20% - 40% of rated voltage.
The fault incoming line will close, and when busbar voltage decreases to one allowable value, the
transient process after switching won’t have serious impact and at this moment close the second
feeder and no longer need to judge angular phase or frequency difference.

3.1.5 Delayed switching

When occur several faults within the short time, and the above three switching modes don’t
send closing the circuit breaker of the second feeder after setting long delay, and busbar residual
voltage attenuates to absolute safe value of the second feeder automatically start the motor, and at
this moment can send closing the circuit breaker of the second feeder. This time control switching
mode is only as standby switching mode.

3.2 Switch interlocking

Switch blocking when occur PT breakage, abnormal switch position, internal fault of the device,
external protection blocking, standby no-voltage blocking, Control Character switch to exit, and the
device had already transferred once. Except for standby no-voltage blocking, and Control Character
switch to exit, other blocking will be removed after removing abnormal condition and manual
confirm by pressing the reset alarm button.

3.2.1 Standby no-voltage blocking

When the busbar is provided power by the feeder in operation (feeder 1), a stand-by feeder
(feeder 2) will be the back source, but if the busbar is provided power by a stand-by feeder (feeder
2), the feeder in operation (feeder 1) will be the back source. When the back source voltage is less
than the setting value of “standby no voltage amplitude” and Control Character input “standby no-
voltage blocking”, the standby no-voltage blocking will operate according to the setting value of
“standby no-voltage delay” and send idle contact alarm “standby no-voltage delay”. After recover the
standby voltage, the device will remove blocking without manual confirm reset.

When the stand-by feeder (feeder 2) PT is under maintenance condition, if do not want to affect
the switching operation because of this, you can set to exit "standby no-voltage blocking" function,
and at this time the device will still carry out switching operation.

3.2.2 Other blocking

The device had already transferred once refers to a stand-by feeder can be allowed to close
only once in any state. For instance after the rapid switching closing, it should automatically block
the following three closing like synchronous switching and so on.
External protection blocking refers to when some faults occur, relay like busbar protection

by input these protection’s lockout.

3.2.3 PT breakage
When the secondary circuit of auxiliary busbars PT has breakage, the device will not ensure the
validity of voltage, frequency, and phase. In order to avoid fault closing, the device will block
switching in this state.

Busbar PT breakage alarm will exit according to current when the three-phase current is less
than the setting value of “no current”. Busbar PT breakage adopts the line voltage drop and the
negative sequence voltage rise criterion, and delay 10s after startup to alarm.

3.3 Switching mode

3.3.1 Switch startup mode
This device includes three switch startup modes: manual switching mode, fault switching mode
and abnormal switching mode (include low voltage startup and starting after the trip without fault of
work breaker).

3.3.1.1 Manual switching

Manual switching is operation switching in the normal state which manually handle or remote
control the switching of the two feeders (or one busbar sectionalizer).
3.3.1.2 Fault switching
Fault swithching is the switching that must be carried out when the feeder in operation has a
fault. Protection tripping contacts of the feeder in operation start switching. Tripping the fault feeder,
and closing standby feeder when the contact closes.

3.3.1.3 Abnormal switching

Abnormal switching is the continuous low voltage of three-phase busbar, and the device
automatically judge and start the power supply switching under the condition that the switch is off by
error, which is caused by fault operation, the feeder in operation has no current without fault or
reverse power starting.
3.3.1.3.1 Breaker error off starting
The circuit breaker of the feeder in operation is off, and Control Character input “Breaker error
off starting”, and the current of the feeder in operation is less than the setting value of “No current”.
3.3.1.3.2 No voltage starting
The busbar three-phase voltages are lower than the setting value of “No voltage starting” , and
Control Character input “No voltage starting”, and also delayed by the setting value of “No voltage
starting delay”.
3.3.1.3.3 No current starting
The current of the feeder in operation is less than the setting value of “No current”, and the
busbar frequency is less than the setting value of “Frequency of no current starting”, and Control
Character input “No current starting”, and also delayed by the setting value of “No current starting
delay”.
3.3.1.3.4 Inverse power starting
It is available for the condition that the operation contact of the feeder in operation has some

10 NARI Technology Development Co.,

Ltd.
problem that it can’t input. When the feeder in operation has some problem or other protections trip
off, the current will flow to the feeder in operation, and the current is larger than 0.1A, and the voltage
will decrease, thus the line voltage is less than the setting value of “Inverse power voltage”. and
also delayed by the setting value of “Inverse power starting delay”.

3.3.2 Switching mode

The switching mode includes parallel automatic switching, parallel semi-automatic switching,
series switching and same time switching.

3.3.2.1 Parallel automatic switching

Parallel automatic switching is that after manual or remote control starting switching, if meet the
condition of parallel switching, the device will close the circuit breaker of standby (working) feeder
and trip the circuit breaker of working(standby) feeder after “Trip delay of parallel switching”. If within
the setting time, the closing circuit breaker of standby (working) feeder is tripped by other device,
the device will not trip the working (standby) circuit breaker. If not meet the condition of parallel
switching, the device will block switching operation and send alarm signal.

3.3.2.2 Parallel semi-automatic switching

Parallel semi-automatic switching is that after manual or remote control starting switching, if
meet the condition of parallel switching, the device will close the circuit breaker of standby (working)
feeder, and then the personnel must manually trip the circuit breaker of working (standby) feeder. If
within the default setting time, the personnel doesn’t manually trip the circuit breaker of working
(standby) feeder, the device will send alarm signal and trip the standby(working) circuit breaker to
avoid the parallel operation of the two feeder. If not meet the condition of parallel switching, the
device will block switching operation and send alarm signal.

Parallel switching is available for the switching of two feeder that have the same system
frequency and the inherent small phase difference, and the implementation is rapid switching.
3.3.2.3 Series switching
Series switching is that tripping the circuit breaker of working (standby) feeder after starting
switching, and then closing the circuit breaker of standby (working) feeder after confirming the circuit
breaker of working (standby) feeder has been tripped and meets the condition of switching.
For the condition that the working feeder breaker error off starting, because the circuit breaker
of working (standby) feeder has been tripped, then meets the condition of switching, the device close
the circuit breaker of standby (working) feeder.

Series switching is available for the switching of two feeder that have different system frequency
and the inherent great phase difference of same frequency system, and the implementation includes
four kinds: rapid switching, synchronous switching, residual voltage switching, and delayed switching.

3.3.2.4 Same time switching

Same time switching is that after starting switching, the orders of tripping the circuit breaker of
working (standby) feeder and closing the circuit breaker of standby (working) feeder are almost
simultaneously sent, but there is a setting delay before sending closing order to ensure completing
tripping before closing.

Same time switching is available for the switching of two feeder that have same frequency
system or different frequency system. And the implementation includes four kinds: rapid switching,

3.4 Switching under different wiring conditions of the busbar

The configuration of the High Speed Transfer Device used for power plant is the single busbar
connection.

The general configuration of the High Speed Transfer Device used for enterprise is two busbar
sections connection or the single busbar connection. Under the condition of single busbar, feeder 1
or feeder 2 is mutually the working and the standby. The two busbar sections connection allows a
variety of operation modes, feeder 1 or feeder 2 sometimes works at the same time, and they are
for mutual standby through the busbar sectionalizer; sometimes close the busbar sectionalizer,
feeder 1 and feeder 2 are for mutual backup.

3.5 Decoupling
During the switching process, if discover the breaker that should be closed is closed, but the
breaker that should be open isn’t tripped in the setting time, then the device will perform to coupling
function, trip just closed breaker, avoid to parallel input the two feeder long.Such as: same time
switching or parallel automatic/semi-automatic switching, input standby feeder, standby feeder
normally closed, but not to trip the working feeder.Reach the setting time delay, device will perform

to coupling function, trip just closed standby feeder. And vice versa. Because Series switching is that
closing the circuit breaker of standby (working) feeder after confirming the circuit breaker of working
(standby) feeder has been tripped, so there is no decoupling function.Manual switch this function
through the fixed value setting " Manual switching decoupling " control character cast back.If the
control character is set to 0, the manual switch, manual switch at the same time not parallel to
coupling function. If the control character is set to 1, the manual switch, manual switch at the same
time parallel input decoupling function.

3.6 Low voltage load shedding

It’s only available for the power plant used single busbar wiring. After a high speed transfer,
when the busbar voltage do not match the number and capacity to self load startup, thus can not
guarantee all load of the entire group automatically start, cut off some loads that don’t have to
participate in automatic starting to ensure the automatic starting of other important auxiliary
machines.
Device is provided with two sections of low-voltage load shedding exits, and the two segments
are set low voltage and delay.

It’s only available for the factory. When can not complete rapid switching and the following three
switching closings have been slowed down and the frequency difference becomes larger after the
fault, cut off the generator when the other three switchings send closing order after failing rapid
switching to ensure the safety of the generator. The device provides “Cut auxiliary machine 1” and
“Cut auxiliary machine 2” output to separately cut off the generator on the two busbars.

3.8 Post accelerating function

In order to prevent the switch closing on the fault feeder, the device outputs " Start post
accelerate " contact to start branch that is with post-acceleration protection function to accelerate
the removal of faults.

5.1.4 Explanation for Equipment Parameter Settings:

1.Current SetG No.
The current effective setting value zone. There are ten sets of setting value which are for
switching, and the setting value of device parameter doesn’t part, which has only one setting value.

2.CT secondary value

The setting range of CT secondary value is 1A or 5A.

5.1.5 Setting explaination of the setting value

5.1.5.1 Setting explaination of the setting value
1. The setting value of parallel switching
Voltage difference of parallel switching, Frequency difference of parallel switching, phase
difference of parallel switching, Trip delay of parallel switching: Parallel switching refers to the
manual parallel switching mode.Parallel switching realization mode must be rapid switching. When
voltage amplitude difference, frequency difference and phase difference of the voltage of the
standby feeder and busbar are separately less than the setting value of voltage difference,
frequency difference and phase difference of parallel switching, the device will send switch on order
to close, and trip the circuit breaker of working feeder after “Trip delay of parallel switching”.

2. Same time switching delay

If the realization mode is same time switching, after sending the order of tripping working
feeder (standby feeder), the device will send the order of closing standby feeder (working feeder )
according to the setting delay.

3. Closing two side breaker of feeder delay

In the power plant the standby power has two breaker on high side and on low side, the low
side is connected to busbar. Sometimes the standby power breaker on the high side isn’t closed. At
this time if need to close standby power, the device will first send the order of closing breaker on

NARI Technology Development Co., Ltd. 29

high side and then send the order of closing breaker on low side according to the setting delay.

4. The setting value of frequency difference and phase difference of rapd switching
If the realization mode is rapid switching, the device will send closing order when the frequency
difference and phase difference of the voltage of the standby feeder and busbar are less than the
frequency difference and phase difference of rapid switching.

5. The setting value of synchronous switching

Frequency difference of synchronous switching: it is one of the necessary conditions of
synchronous switching and synchronous angle switching. The default value is 5HZ.
Angle lead of synchronous switching: when the frequency difference of the voltage of the
standby feeder and busbar is less than the frequency difference of synchronous switching, the
device will send on order as long as the angular difference of the voltage of the standby feeder and
busbar is within the range of the setting value. Used only for synchronous angle switching.

Closing time of standby feeder: the setting value is generally set according to the inherent
delayed time of the standby feeder. Used only for synchronous switching.

6. Voltage of residual voltage switching

If the realization mode is residual voltage starting, the device will send closing order when the
voltage of the busbar is less than the setting value. The default value is 25%.

7. Long delay switching delay

When input “Delayed switching input”, after starting switching, the device will send closing
order according to the setting delayed time. Don’t judge the voltage difference, frequency difference
and phase difference at that time. The default value is 9s.

8. No voltage starting
When the busbar voltage is less than “no voltage starting”, and the duration exceeds the “no
voltage starting delay”, then the device will meet the condition of no voltage starting. The default
value is 40%, 1s. Because the voltage is too low when carry out no voltage starting, the device will
always adopt residual voltage switching and long delay modes.

9. The setting value of load shedding

After a high speed transfer when the busbar voltage is less than “First load shedding Voltage”,
and the duration exceeds the “First load shedding Delay”, then the device will send out the output”
load shedding 1”. Or when the busbar voltage is less than “Second load shedding Voltage”, and
the duration exceeds the “Second load shedding Delay”, then the device will send out the output”
load shedding 2”. The default value is 60%, 60%, 0.5s, 9.0s.

10. Initial angular phase difference 1

It is used for compensating for the angular phase between voltage of source 1 and the busbar
that is caused by wiring, and default vaue is 0. It is equal to the phase angle of bus voltage Uab
minus feeder1 voltage phase angle. Calculate as figure 5.1-4.

11. Initial angular phase difference 2

It is used for compensating for the angular phase between voltage of source 2 and the busbar
that is caused by wiring, and default vaue is 0. The setting method is the same with the seeting
method of Initial angular phase difference 1.
30 NARI Technology Development Co.,

Feeder angle of feeder angle of bus voltage Calculate Initial angular phase
Uab difference
Ua 0 30 30 – 0 = 30

Uab 30 30 30 – 30 = 0
Ubc -90 30 30 – (-90) = 120
Uca 150 30 30 – 150 = -120
Figure 5.1-4 Initial angular phase difference list

12. No current
It is used for No voltage starting starting logic and PT break logic to determine whether the
feeder is non-slip flow. The default value is 0.05In.

13. Voltage setting value

It is used for the criteria of charge and discharge in the operation state.

voltage of the busbar is less than the setting value. The default value is 25%.

6. Long delay switching delay

When input “Delayed switching input”, after starting switching, the device will send closing
order according to the setting delayed time. Don’t judge the voltage difference, frequency difference
and phase difference at that time. The default value is 9s.

8. Initial angular phase difference 1

It is used for compensating for the angular phase between voltage of source 1 and the busbar
that is caused by wiring, and default vaue is 0. It is equal to the phase angle of bus voltage Uab
minus feeder1 voltage phase angle. Calculate as figure 5.2-4.

9. Initial angular phase difference 2

It is used for compensating for the angular phase between voltage of source 2 and the busbar
that is caused by wiring, and default vaue is 0. The setting method is the same with the seeting
method of Initial angular phase difference 1.

10. No current starting setting value

The setting value of the frequency, delayed time, current of no current starting: it is used for no
current starting logic. When the incoming feeder current is less than no current constant value and
busbar frequency is less than no current starting frequency and duration is above delayed time of
no current starting, then the device enters into no current starting logic of the incoming feeder.
Frequency of no current starting: will be set according to the least frequency that occurs when
the two power supplies that are to avoid feeder 1 and feeder 2 operate normally, which can be
49.50Hz.
No current starting delay: the delay is used for coordinating with no current starting delay of
the former grade High Speed Transfer Device, and the value of the first device can be 50ms.

11. The setting value of inverse power starting

The setting value of inverse power starting delay and inverse power voltage amplitude: inverse
power starting is mainly to solve rapid starting problem under the condition that the rapid protection
contact can’t attach to the High Speed Transfer Device, and it is also to solve rapid starting problem
when the side substation adjacent feeder fault occurs. Inverse power starting delay will be set
according to avoid “operation time of adjacent feeder main protection + the off time of the incoming
feeder switch”. The default value is 100ms. The voltage threshold is mainy to avoid frequent starting
of High Speed Transfer Device when adjacent feeder fault occurs, and it can be 90%.

12. The setting value of voltage

It is used for the criteria of charge and discharge in the operation state.
