3 SAFETY

The following symbols are used in this manual where appropriate:

The WARNING safety symbol

THIS INTRODUCES DIRECTIVES, PROCEDURES OR PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES WHICH
MUST BE EXECUTED OR FOLLOWED. FAILURE TO OBEY A WARNING CAN RESULT IN
INJURY TO THE OPERATOR OR THIRD PARTIES.

The CAUTION safety symbol

This draws the operator's attention to information, directives or procedures which must be
executed or followed. Failure to obey a caution can result in damage to equipment.

The ELECTROSTATIC SENSITIVE DEVICE symbol

This indicates that the device or system being handled can be damaged by electrostatic
discharges.
Refer to Handling Precautions for Electrostatic Sensitive Devices.

3.1 Handling Precautions for Electrostatic Sensitive Devices

Certain devices used in electronic equipment can be damaged by electrostatic discharges resulting from built-up
static electricity. Because of this, special precautions must be taken to minimize or eliminate the possibility of these
electrostatic discharges occurring.

Read the following recommendations carefully before handling electronic 5

circuits, printed circuit boards or modules containing electronic
components.

➢ Before handling electronic circuits, discharge the static electricity from your body by touching and
momentarily holding a grounded metal object (e.g. a pipe or cabinet).

➢ Avoid the build-up of static electricity on your body by not wearing synthetic clothing material, as these
tend to generate and store static electric charges. Cotton or cotton blend materials are preferred because
they do not store static electric charges.

➢ Do not handle electronic circuits unless it is absolutely necessary. Only hold modules by their front panel
handles.

➢ Do not touch printed circuit boards, their connectors or their components with conductive devices or with
your hands.

➢ Put the electronic circuit, printed circuit board or module containing electronic components into an antistatic
protective bag immediately after removing it from the system rack.

4 Description

The LVS sensors family are high sensitivity velocimeter especially designed for low frequency vibration monitoring.
Typical applications are large size power plants where vibration frequencies below 10Hz are relevant.
Based on electrodynamic principle, they are natively more sensitive to low frequencies than piezo technology used
in common velocimeters. To achieve this sensitivity, the sensor uses a moving coil surrounding a permanent
magnet. As soon as the sensor is exposed to a movement in the measuring axis a relative speed appears between
the coil and the magnet, creating an induced voltage that is proportional to the movement velocity.

LVS User manual

4.1 Non-linearized sensor

The principle described above allows the first category of LVS sensor called “non-linearized” to supply an analog
signal proportional to the vibration velocity without need of any power supply.

4.2 Linearized sensor

The second category of LVS uses the same physical principle but an electronic circuit is integrated to the sensor to
extend the frequency response in low frequency. A power supply is then necessary to energize the electronic circuit.

5 Family overview

Non-linearized
Sensor name Frequency bandwidth Measuring orientation
LVS-100 10Hz to 2kHz Horizontal
LVS-200 10Hz to 2kHz Vertical
Linearized
LVS-101 0.5Hz to 2kHz Horizontal
LVS-201 0.5Hz to 2kHz Vertical
LVS-301 New 0.5Hz to 2kHz Omnidirectional

6 Installation

In principle, each bearing is equipped with two LVS sensor installed at 90° from each other.
The transducer has a waterproof integrated metallic protection conduit. A shielded signal cable links the
electrodynamic velocity sensor to the industrial housing for interconnection with the field wiring and then to the
monitoring system.
The velocity signal is transmitted to the monitoring rack for monitoring and analysis purposes. The nominal signal
6 sensitivity is 100 mV/mm/s.
First, and before installation of the sensor, the area where the vibrations of interest occur must be clearly identified.
To allow a good fixation of the sensor a flat surface shall be determined.

6.1 Sensor location and mounting

It is necessary to determine the location where the measurements must be taken, according to the type of vibration
to be monitored and measurement axis.

When location is determined you can start the sensor installation as follows:
- Position the velocity sensor and its cable on the machine
- Do not bend the cable with a radius less than 50 mm
- Draw the position of the sensor, cable and junction box on the machine.
- Search for a flat surface perpendicular to the axis to be measured on the bearing. Indicate the position of the
M10 x1.5 hole on the flat surface and drill it to a depth of 15 mm.
8 - Thread the M10 hole to a depth of minimum 10 mm.
- Screw down the velocity sensor with the supplied M10 x 1.5 stud.
- Secure the screw with Loctite 221 for instance.
- Connect the cable to the industrial box according to wiring diagram.
- Fix the armored cable on the machine as showed on the drawing.

6.2 Mounting support

The design of a mounting support depends heavily on the kind of vibration sensor which shall be mounted on it.
Weight, size and cable exit of the sensor dictate the design of the mounting arrangement to the measured element
(bearing for instance).
The required mounting support can take almost any form as long as it meets the requirements of the available
space. It is up to the user to design a mounting support that will correspond the closest to the requirements of the
application. The mounting arrangement shall make use of metallic material and shall be robust to entirely transmit
the vibration without damping and not generate resonances in the range of vibration frequencies of interest. Once
assembled, the mounting support must be earthed.

6.4 Installation of armored cable

The armored cable is the link between the velocity sensor and the monitoring system. When the cable is not
armored, it shall be routed from the bearing to the monitoring system or transmitter through a protection conduit like
a flexible or semi-rigid polyethylene PVC or metallic conduit. This conduit avoids that the sensor cable moves and
wears by friction and ensures a mechanical protection and a good fixation of adapter and cable on its entire length.
Avoid routing the extension cable near or in a cable duct containing high voltage cables. In addition, the cable shall
be attached to the chassis of the machine or laid down in a cable duct.

6.5 Installation of the industrial box

6.5.1 Preliminary considerations

The fixing of the industrial enclosure on a chassis is done by means of four screws and fixation foot. Opening of the
enclosure cover is not required to access the fixing holes. Drilling template is delivered with the boxes. After fixing
of the enclosure onto the chassis proceed with the cable interconnections using stuffing glands.

6.5.2 Grounding
The industrial box shall be grounded to the chassis of the machine.

6.6 Field wiring

6.6.1 Absolute vibration velocity of bearings

For the transmission of X and Y signals between junction boxes and monitoring system, a shielded 2x twisted pair
wire transmission cable is used, wire section 0.75 mm 2.
At both ends, the transmission cable shall be identified, and each wire equipped with crimp terminals. Each
conductor can be recognized by its colour code. The mapping of conductors to screw terminals can be found in the
ECSCAD drawings of the monitoring system. Below is an example for the non-linearized velocity sensor:

7 Functional Test of System

7.1 Test of linearized electrodynamic velocity sensor LVS-101 / LVS-201 / LVS-301
LVS linearized electrodynamic Velocity sensor with 10-meter integral cable and integrated electronic with four wire
signal transmission.
Measuring range: 0 to 50 mm/s peak
• Power the sensor by means of 24VDC voltage source.
• Verify that the standing DC voltage between the signal output and 0V is around +6V for the LVS-101 /
LVS-201 and around +12V for the LVS-301 (see tolerance in datasheet)
• Mount the velocimeter on a shaker table and generate a sine wave vibration level of 10mm/sRMS at 100 Hz
for instance.
• Verify by means of an oscilloscope the shape of the sine wave signal and its amplitude. If no shaker table
is available gently shake the velocity sensor by hand and check that the signal is present.
• With the LVS excited by a signal of 10mm/sRMS at 100 Hz, the output amplitude shall be 1VRMS at 100 Hz.

CAUTION
To get accurate results, the fixation of the LVS sensor on the shaker is very important. The sensor shall be
aligned with the shaker head and the reference sensor to get correct results. If not correctly mounted and
fixed on the shaker, the extension cable may create resonance and false results.

7.2 Test of non-linearized electrodynamic velocity sensor

LVS linearized electrodynamic Velocity sensor with 10-meter integral cable with two wire signal transmission.
Measuring range: 0 to 100 mm/s peak
• Mount the velocimeter on a shaker table and generate a sine wave vibration level of 10mm/sRMS at 100 Hz
for instance. 13
