Experiment 3 : Installing Workgroup LAN

Introduction
An IP address is a unique network layer numbering
system that end system use in order to identify
and comuncate with each other.

A Subnet (short for subnetwork) is a division of

the network that is identified by a subnet mask .A
subnet mask is an IP address that is used to tell
how many bits in an octet .

Packet internet groper (ping) command is used to

brovide a basic test of weather a particualerhost is
operating.
types of cables used in networks and other related
topics.
1.  Twisted Pair Cable (We worked with this type
in the lab)
2.  Coaxial Cable
3.  Fiber Optic Cable

Objective:
1.Eathernet cabling and when and how use them.
2.Installing a peer-to-peer local area network
3.implemantation application sharing between
workstation
4. To Build cables (Twisted Pair)

Procedures :
Applications of Twisted-Pair Cables:
1. In telephone lines
2. In DSL lines
3. In LANs

Types of Twisted–Pair Cables:

1. Unshielded Twisted Pair ( UTP ): These
generally comprise of wires and insulators.
2. Shielded Twisted Pair ( STP ): They have a
braided wired mesh that encases each pair of
insulated wires.

There are two types of network cables commonly

used in PC networks - Straight-through and

cross-over.

Usually use straight cable to connect different type
of devices. This type of cable will be used most of
the time and can be used to:
1) Connect a computer to a switch/hub's
normal
port.
2) Connect a computer to a cable/DSL modemLAN
port.
3) Connect a router WAN port to a cable/DSL
modems LAN port.

4) Connect a router LAN port to a switch/hub

uplink port. (Normally used for expanding
network)
5) Connect two switches/hubs with one of the
switch/hub using an uplink port and the other one
using normal port.

Crossover Cable
Sometimes you will use crossover cable, it's
usually
used to connect same type of devices. A crossover
cable can be used to:
1) Connect two computers directly.
2) Connect a router LAN port to a
switch/hubnormal port. (Normally used for
expanding network)
3) Connect two switches/hubs by using normal
port
in both switches/hubs.

Sharing:
To share non-public folders with other computers
on a local network,
follow these steps:
1. Click Start  , and then click Computer.
2. Browse to the folder you want to share.
3. Right-click the folder, select Share with, and
then
click Homegroup(Read), Homegroup (Read/Write),
or Specific people.

Conclusion :
The OS now days allow us to do that easily with
some simple steps , how ever we need to take
care of the wiring and the structure of some
cables for example the twisted pair if we are
going to use it as crossover or as straight.
