LEVEL 4 FOUNDATION DIPLOMA IN ART AND DESIGN
Personal Brief

In this project I will be prioritising Photography and Moving Image

My project will be focused on a series of short videos, focusing on the importance of

color, in these films, the three videos will be the same content, but struck in a
different color temperate each time. It gets the audience to think on how it relates
to emotion. And how color can drastically change the mood and emotional influence
of photos and videos. In would have the actors wear clothes based on the color of the
video.

I wish to do this project because of my sudden allure to color. I am fascinated in how

colors relate to emotions and how they can be exploited and adapted to completely
flip the emotions of an audience. I got this abrupt obsession during secondary school,
during my Art GSCE when I was completing my final exam. In that, I created a
stunning plaster piece of a deer skull, where I exposed it to an array of lights, and
saw how shadows could be manipulated to create all sorts of shapes, which gives me
the need to expand on that further.

I will practice film photography by going out and shooting my own media and getting
used so how all the settings work, alongside studying camera and understanding how
aperture, shutter speed and exposure affect the type of image you are wanting to
produce. I do also wish to learn more about Photoshop as it is an incredible tool to
edit photos with, I have got the bare basics down but I wish to learn more, about how
to color correct and more of the finer details of the program. Photoshop is probably
the most important tool in creating emotion for photography, the literal boatloads of
tools you can do to change the colors, temperatures of the shot and overall feel of
emotion in your project is what I want to use. Things like dodging and burning can be
useful to amplify or nullify shadows and lights’ can use the elements of the exposure
triangle to express forms of emotion by using aperture. By Manipulating the depth of
field of the aperture, I can create some very dramatic shots. Shutter speed can be
used as well to manipulate the look of the shot by, for example taking that classic
shot of a road where the car lights drag across the image, that’s a very colorful and
emotional shot.

Print on to asotate and turn that into a screen

For the media side of the spectrum, I would like to develop my skills in editing, even
after 2 years, I still think that I am not a good enough editor for the type of work I
want to go into. I wish to seek knowledge in After Effects to further my editing skills,
because if I feel like I can finally use After Effects, I can call myself a somewhat
competent editor. A bigger side of media, is of course camera work, from my past
experiences in my previous college courses, I have never gotten my camera skills
quite on par to what I would have liked, some of those skills include focusing my
shots, framing and importantly, sound.

And by the end of my project I am hoping to have achieved being able to explain how
colors mean everything when it comes to media. Using media to communicate
emotion means that I can easily communicate my inner thoughts on the topic, as
things said in writing can be 100% adapted properly, I have been given all the tools
and mediums to thoroughly and effectively communicate my desires for the project,
and by the end of it. I wish to have achieved getting the skills needed to do my final
piece, as this unit is to further develop my skills.

The final outcome I wish to produce is 3 1 minute productions filmed and edited in
different colours and 3 images using asotate and screen printing to show colour
separation creating an Andy Warhole effect.

I wish to create questions, not answers through experiments in color temperatures in

lighting studios.

Research

The research I will be producing for my project as stated above will be heavily
practical. I have access to an array of books and media I can cite and study, learning
proper lighting techniques to frame my shots perfectly. Some of these books are
from Michael Langford, who is a very experienced photographer, who has released a
multitude of guides that’s teach basic and advanced photography techniques I can
use. I will also be studying the Exposure triangle; and multitudes of other
photography theories and techniques that I will put into practice.

I will also need to research into color theory, and other techniques on how to use
and manipulates colors.

I also have professionals I can contact and learn from, maybe even setting up
interviews with them. I want to gain as much knowledge as I can from these to
further my knowledge for my project. These professional include my own father, who
is well knowledge in photography in lighting, and even my own teachers, who have
the most knowledge out of anyone I could be able to contact. Even with my time
limitations I think that I will be able to interview these people and gain a lot from
them.

Materials

For my project; I would require the following

- A DSLR Camera capable of supporting multiple attachments at once.
- A Mannfrotto Tripod
- A camera mounted microphone
- Studio lights
- Color Temperature sheets
- A green screen
- A film Camera
- Black & White Film
- A Darkroom
- Photography Development Chemicals
- Interview Studio
- Asotate

I will be practicing these skills by visiting the darkroom regularly and experimenting
with the chemicals, Making Photograms and Chemograms, and really perfecting the
technique of making sure the temperatures of the chemicals are right, and also
perfecting how long I need to keep the photos in the chemicals for.
