Stroke

In this summary, I will explain the meaning, different types, prevention, and statistics.

According to Stroke | cdc.gov. (2020, April 7). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

https://www.cdc.gov/stroke/index.htm. A stroke, sometimes called a brain attack, occurs when

something blocks the blood supply to a part of the brain or when a vessel within the brain bursts.

Also, it is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States or a major cause of disability in

adults.

There are three types of strokes such as Ischemic stroke, Hemorrhagic stroke, and Transient

Ischemic Attack (TIA); the First one, Ischemic Stroke, one of the most commons types of stroke

(87%). It is caused by the blockage of blood clots that go to the artery, that artery is in charge of

supply oxygen to the brain.

The second one, Hemorrhagic stroke, this happens when the artery in the brain breaks open

and damage the brain cells. There are two types of this condition. Intracerebral and subarachnoid

hemorrhage. Intracerebral hemorrhage is when the artery in the brain explodes; and,

subarachnoid hemorrhage means bleeding into the space surrounding the brain.
The last one is a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), also called a mini stroke. It is a stroke

that lasts only a few minutes. It happens because of the blood that goes to the brain is blocked for

a short time. Although this is a mini stroke, this is also a warning for futures stroke. When we

talk about stroke, we talk about sudden numbness in one side of the body, trouble speaking or

understanding, trouble seeing or walking, and severe headache.

To verifies if a person is having a stroke, you need to do a simple test. This test is called

F.A.S.T. Stroke | cdc.gov. (2020, April 7). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Face-

ask the person to smile, Arms- ask the person to spice up both arms, Speech- ask the person to

repeat a simple phrase, and Time- if you see any of these signs, call 911.”

According to Stroke | cdc.gov. (2020, April 7). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds and every 4 minutes someone dies of

a stroke. High vital signs, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes are the leading causes

of stroke. Stroke-related costs in the United States came to nearly $46 billion between 2014 to

2015. This total includes the value of health care services, medicines to treat stroke, and missed

days of labor.

To prevent stroke, we must eat a healthy diet low in sodium including vegetables and fruits,

also this diet can lower blood pressure; maintain a healthy weight, do exercise, avoid smoke, and

limit alcohol use.
