The Jan. 26 snowstorm that
forced St. Joe’s offices to close
at 12 p.m. also ended the univer-
sity’s shuttle services to student
dormitories.
Shuttle services were sus-
pended for a full 24 hours from
Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
until Thursday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m.
Despite the university’s deci-
sion to close at 12 p.m., Public
Safety was asked to continue the
shuttle service until 1p.m. in or-
der to ensure the students’ return
to their respective residences.
Students appear to understand
why the precautionary action of
shutting down shuttle transpor-
tation occurred, but were faced
with the difficulty of returning
to campus after the university
decided to issue a two hour de-
lay Thursday morning. The uni-
versity made the decision to de-
lay the opening of offices until
11 a.m., and due to the activity
period, classes commenced at
1p.m., the same time the shuttle
services started to run.
Students with classes sched-
uled at 1 p.m. on Jan. 27 had to
find other means of transporta-
tion in order to arrive at campus
on time.

University President Joseph M.
O’Keefe, S.J., sat down with
The Hawk’s Editor-in-Chief to
discuss ideas and potential ini-
tiatives to be implemented next
semester.
LC: So what will St. Joe’s
look like in 5 years with a new
president?
JMO: Well what some of my
hopes are for St. Joes, I think, is
higher visibility in terms of its
profile. I think in many ways, it
is not well known enough, and
I think it is a place that would
be attractive to a lot of students.
I think it’s important to increase
the pool of candidates [and] of
applicants. And then along with
that higher profile, also, is the
whole fundraising dimension.
That it will become a place that
is, building on the past success,
but a place that donors really
want to give to… So I think,
higher profile.
I think another dimension that
is important is to build on exist-
ing partnerships, but very much
engage with the city of Philadel-

St. Joe’s hosts speakers for Mental Health Awareness Week Connect with

Good mental health is essential
to succeed academically, accord-
ing to Saint Joseph’s University’s
Counseling Center.
Gregg Nicholls, director of
counseling and psychological
services, has coordinated with
Saint Joseph’s University to bring
the second annual Mental Health
Awareness Week to students from
Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.
Activities that promote good
mental health will be featured
throughout the week including
a mental health screening Feb. 4
in the LaFarge Walk-In office. In
addition, Iraq war veteran Bryan
Adams, who suffers from Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder, will
speak with the students about
living with his condition in Cam-
pion’s Forum Theater.
“I hope that these programs
show that it is not a sign of weak-
ness to come in for help with a
mental issue,” Nicholls said.
Nicholls is optimistic about the
benefits Mental Health Aware-
ness Week can have for students.
According to Nicholls, it will help
to inform the St. Joe’s population
