1. The Ilocos and Cordillera region are known to have unique textiles.

These two types of

textiles may vary in terms of their design and overall characteristic. But both carry the
identity of Filipinos that for the most part live in mountain areas.

Ilocos textile, in particular, is famous for its ‘Binakul’ - a process done by the Ilocanos in
producing quality textiles. Furthermore, textiles that underwent the aforementioned process can
be recognized easily due to its intricate design. Cordillera province textile, on the other hand, is
much simpler. For the most part, women would have clothes wear that is for the most part
colored in green, red, or blue. While the Ilocanos prefer to have an intricate geometric design,
weavers from the Cordillera province takes on a different design.

2. Nowadays, most of the textiles are mass-produced with imported

threads from overseas, and a Philippine cotton handwoven are
becoming commonly hard to find. One of these textiles is abel from
ilocos region. It is made of cotton and can be plain or patterned. The
abel is a recognizable textile because of its softness, strength, beautiful
and unique designs. The most known textile pattern of abel is binakul
that can be easily recognized by its uniform, interlocked geometric
patterns, and optical art designs. The Kankanaey is one of the
traditional design in Cordillera that also known as the “kulibangbang”.
These textile represent beauty with an expressive and meaningful
designs. It used for blankets, or ules which are used to cover the upper
and lower body of a person because of its soft and breathable cotton.

3. Weaving is one of the primary methods of textile production and it

involves interlinking a set of vertical threads known as the warp, with a
set of horizontal threads, the weft. It is unique from the other textile because it is
hand woven unlike any other textile that is printed because Handwoven fabrics are made
by hand using a handloom, which does not require electricity or produce any
pollution. In addition, the lack of automation presents weavers with many more
opportunities to reduce waste and engage in sustainable practices.
