OPERATION & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT NOTICES
Your new Load/Haul/Dump (LHD) controller has been pre-configured to operate on a specific address
and operating frequency before leaving our factory that cannot be changed by yourselves. We have
assigned this operating frequency based upon our existing records of control equipment previously
supplied to yourselves. However, we strongly recommend you satisfy yourselves that the operating
frequency of your LHD controller does not match that of any other radio remote control system located
at, or around, your operating facility.
WARNING:
CATTRON-THEIMEG™ MAKES EVERY EFFORT TO ENSURE THE
ADDRESS ASSIGNED TO YOUR NEW CONTROL SYSTEM IS NOT
DUPLICATED BASED UPON RECORDS WHICH INDICATE THE ADDRESSES
OF ALL PAST PORTABLE RADIO REMOTE CONTROL (PRRC) SYSTEMS AS
SHIPPED FROM OUR FACILITY TO YOURS.
THEREFORE IT SHOULD BE FULLY UNDERSTOOD THAT WHEN A PRRC
SYSTEM HAS LEFT OUR FACTORY, CATTRON-THEIMEG™ HAS NO
CONTROL OF THE ADDRESS ASSIGNMENTS OF ANY OTHER PRRC
SYSTEM(S) THAT MAY BE IN OPERATION IN CLOSE PROXIMITY WITHIN

NOTE: The switch functions on some LHD controllers will be labeled as text.
Where these functions are labeled with symbols (as in Figure 3-1 above),
refer to Figure 3-2 below for symbol identification.
POWER ON/OFF TOGGLE SWITCH – When this switch is set to ‘ON’, internal battery power is
applied to an RF encoder/transmitter within the controller and the operator can select all control
functions.
JOYSTICK SWITCHES – The two-axis joystick configuration is common to all LHD Controllers and
these items are used to tram the machine and operate the bucket. Joystick outputs may be of the
proportional or analog type, dependent on the system requirement - refer to special operation
descriptions and the custom drawing package supplied with your controller for specific information
TRANSMIT & LOW BATTERY LED INDICATOR – This LED is part of the battery management
system and flashes green when the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch is set to ‘ON’ and the controller
is transmitting with a good battery installed. The LED flashes red when the battery is low and sounds a
beeper to alert the operator. In addition, a low battery cut-off circuit stops the controller micro-
processor when voltage goes below safe operating range.
Apply ‘FULL’ or ‘HALF’ THROTTLE using the thumb operated rocker switch on top of the LOADER
DIRECTIONAL JOYSTICK.
Apply ‘FULL’ or ‘HALF’ THROTTLE using the thumb operated rocker switch on top of the LOADER
DIRECTIONAL JOYSTICK.
TO STEER LEFT.
To steer the machine to the left, move the LOADER DIRECTIONAL (left hand side) JOYSTICK in the
direction indicated (normally away from the operator).
3. If applicable, remove the existing battery pack, then install a fresh, fully charged battery pack in
the controller, making sure the contacts on the underside of the battery pack locate with their
corresponding pick-up contacts in the battery tray.
4. Replace the battery cover and secure by tightening the four thumbscrews.
5. Unlatch (rotate in a clockwise direction and pull out) the controller’s red STOP pushbutton and
set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘ON’. Observe that two quick ‘beeps’ are heard
and the ‘TRANSMIT’/‘LOW BATTERY’ indicator momentarily flashes red before changing to
green.
6. Observe the ‘TRANSMIT’/‘LOW BATTERY’ indicator as you operate a non-motion function
toggle switch such as the rear light. If this LED is now flashing green, your controller is fully
operational.

UNDESIRED MACHINE OPERATION WHICH, IN TURN, COULD RESULT
IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT.
This is accomplished by first turning off power to the controller using the Power ON/OFF Switch.
Then, place the controller on its side with the joysticks parallel to the ground. To enable the switch
diagnostic mode, unlatch (rotate in a clockwise direction and pull out) the controller’s red STOP
pushbutton and set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘ON’ while the controller is in this tilted
position.
This mode of diagnostics activates the beeper when each (1) toggle and pushbutton switch changes state,
and (2) when any motion control joystick changes state.
For example, depress any one of the toggle switches and a single ‘beep’ will be heard. Release the
toggle switch and another single ‘beep’ will be heard as the switch spring returns to center. Repeat this
procedure on the remaining toggle, pushbutton, and rocker switches. If the switches are functioning
correctly, a ‘beep’ will be heard each time the switch changes state.
Operate each motion control joystick about its axis (N, S, E, and W). When a joystick is functioning
correctly, a ‘beep’ will be heard each time the control is moved.
To disable the switch diagnostic mode, set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘OFF’, then re-
apply power to the controller while it is in an upright (normal operating) position.
The battery pack and charging options identified in the following paragraphs are available for your
controller and may be ordered from your nearest CATTRON-THEIMEG™ facility identified on the back
page of this manual.

Troubleshooting.
A basic Troubleshooting Guide is provided overleaf. For safety reasons, when troubleshooting the LHD
controller, the power supply to the controlled machine must be completely isolated to prevent operation
under remote control. However, the other major components of the remote control system (power
supply and receiver/decoder) should be fully operational. The remote control operator should also be
located within 500 feet (160+ meters) of the target receiver/decoder.

Introduction.
Referring to Figure A-1 below, a ‘Belly Box’ Style LHD controller may be supplied as part of your
Remote Control System instead of the traditional LHD controller described in this manual.
This alternative style of controller contains the same controls and indicators as the traditional
controller, thus the method of operation is exactly the same. Apart from the body style, the remaining
differences are in the installation of the Battery Pack and the Carrying Harness. Refer to the following

Cameras.
The basic system uses two high-resolution color cameras, one looking forward and one to the rear. An
optional third camera can be used to view the mucking area and is usually selected by an output from the
operator’s remote control transmitter. All cameras are powered from the Video Transmitter Enclosure
which is mounted on the machine.
Cameras are provided with 3.7 mm wide-angle lenses as standard. Lenses with narrower field of view
angles are also available – contact your CATTRON-THEIMEG™ representative for details.
Each camera is housed in a protective watertight housing to prevent damage from falling debris. The
camera housing is designed to mount to the machine’s fender and allows a 45° angular adjustment about
the vertical axis
NOTE: When used in underground or low ambient lighting applications, the mucking
or working area must be properly illuminated, ideally using sealed beam
Halogen lamps. As a minimum, 4-front lamps and 2-rear lamps are
recommended for effective LHD PVS operation. Some adjustment of beam
direction may also be required.
