Section 1 – Product Data & Specifications
Introduction.
The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Load/Haul/Dump (LHD) Portable Radio Remote Controller provides
safe, reliable, efficient and convenient control of Load/Haul/Dump (LHD) machines by duplicating the
manual controls found in the operator compartment of the vehicle. As a result, the change from manual
to radio remote control is easily learned by the operator. In addition, the operator is able to direct the
machine from a more convenient and safer location, while having a commanding view of the equipment
and its surroundings at the same time.
The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ LHD controller employs advanced microcomputer electronics and utilizes
surface mount technology. A highly advanced encoder circuit board is built using industrial grade
components and incorporates a powerful microcomputer that uses sophisticated operating software. The
main housing that surrounds and protects the electronic circuitry is made from sturdy high-impact
fiberglass and the extensive use of seals and gaskets provide all weather protection for these items.
Only the highest quality industrial grade and ‘mil-spec’ switches whose reliability and construction have
been field-tested and proven under extreme conditions are used in your LHD controller. Total water
and dust sealing makes these switches suitable for use in mining environments.
The LHD controller can be used with all CATTRON-THEIMEG™ AT Series or MP Series
receiver/decoder units. A variety of RF transmitters can be built into this controller, which typically
operates in the 450-470 MHz, bands on licensed radio channels. In addition, all CATTRON-THEIMEG™
LHD controllers meet the FCC's requirements regarding narrow band and 12.5 kHz bandwidths.

Notable Performance and Safety Features.

POWER ON SELF TEST (POST) DIAGNOSTICS - When the operator first turns the controller’s
power to ‘ON’, a sophisticated self-test routine tests the microcomputer and all function switch inputs to
detect unwanted commands in the system. All Joystick style switches are tested for neutral at this time.
A small speaker beeps twice when the test has been completed satisfactorily.
UNIQUE ADDRESS CODE - Each controller and receiver/decoder pair is configured with a unique
address code so that the equipment will respond only to the controller whose address code matches that
of the decoder.
INTELLIGENT DIGITAL MESSAGE PROTOCOL - CATTRON-THEIMEG™ remote control
systems utilize a unique message protocol for industrial control applications rather than the customary
Electronic Data Processing (EDP) type of message format.
BATTERY SAVER – If the controller has not been operated for 15 minutes, a battery management
system detects this inactivity and puts the controller into a ‘deep sleep’ mode. To reset the controller,
the POWER ON/OFF SWITCH must be set to ‘OFF’, and then set to ‘ON’ again.

©03/2007, CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Section 1, Page 1

Notable Performance and Safety Features, continued.
TRANSMIT/LOW BATTERY INDICATOR - The low battery detection circuit is a two stage design.
With a good battery, this indicator light flashes green for each burst of transmitted data. If the battery
voltage drops below the normal level, this indicator flashes red during each transmission. A beeping
sound every 10 seconds alerts the operator. When this happens, the battery has approximately one hour
of operating time remaining. The controller stops transmitting before the voltage drops so low that
erratic operation could occur.
FUNCTION CONTROL - The operator is able to control many functions in different directions and
speeds. For example, Steer ‘RIGHT’ and ‘REVERSE’ Direction may be commanded simultaneously if
required. A number of auxiliary functions, such as Fire Suppression ‘ON’, Rear Lights ‘ON’, and Boom
‘UP’ may also be commanded from the controller.
BATTERY PACK OPTIONS – Alkaline (disposable) & Ni-Cad (rechargeable) battery packs are
available from CATTRON-THEIMEG™. Whether you choose disposable or rechargeable battery
packs, changing the battery pack is easy - simply release four screws and withdraw the gasketed battery
cover, install the battery pack, then replace the cover and tighten the screws. There are no wires or
connectors to insert into the battery pack, which improves long-term reliability of this unit.
POWER ON/OFF SWITCH - The controller has a power ON/OFF Key or Toggle Switch that must
be set to ‘ON’ in order to send commands to the receiver/decoder. If the power ON/OFF Switch is set to
‘OFF’, the decoder will remove all commands from the controlled machine, stopping all movement.
‘STOP’ PUSHBUTTON – This red pushbutton allows the operator the stop the machine at any time.
Depressing this pushbutton while the LHD controller is turned on will repeatedly send a burst of stop
commands to all outputs including the mainline control relay (OPR).
INTERNAL TILT SWITCH – If the controller is tilted in any axis beyond 45° of upright for longer
than the programmed time, (typically 3-seconds), a programmable function is sent automatically. This
function can be assigned in the Receiver/Decoder Unit to stop the equipment, sound an alarm, or both.
Reset time is also programmable.
EXTENSIVE SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - Joysticks are continually tested during normal operation. If a
joystick fails to pass the test, its commands will be ignored and the failed switch will be locked out.

Overview – CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Radio Remote Control

Systems.
Figure 1-1 below shows a simplified block diagram of a typical CATTRON-THEIMEG™ radio remote
control system. Refer to this figure and the following paragraphs for a functional description of the
remote control system.
The target receiver/decoder is controlled by the LHD Controller, which sends signals to the
Receiver/Decoder Unit mounted on the target machine by way of a UHF radio link. The signal is picked
up by the antenna and passed on to the receiver. Provided the frequency of the LHD controller exactly
matches that of the target receiver and passes all data tests, the signal is passed on to the decoder.

Section 1, Page 2 ©03/2007, CATTRON-THEIMEG™

Overview – CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Radio Remote Control
Systems, continued.
The decoder compares the address code of the signal to its own address code. If the signal’s address
code does not match the decoder’s address code, it is ignored and a message to this effect will appear on
a system status display usually located in the receiver/decoder unit. If the address code is correct, the
decoder processes the message and energizes and de-energizes the appropriate control and auxiliary
function relays located within the control system.
An Automatic Safety Override (ASO) function continually monitors the state of any directional relay
output (i.e. Forward/Reverse). If a monitored relay electrically fails closed without a command from the
controller, the ASO circuit logic de-energizes the master output relay (OPR) which should be connected
to the mainline contactor of your controlled machine.
During operation, the microprocessor on the decoder board resets multiple watchdog timer circuits
whenever valid messages are received and decoded. If the microprocessor fails to reset the watchdog
timers, the timer circuits shut down and de-activate all relay outputs. The decoder microprocessor
requires continuously valid transmitted signals to be received and decoded or all relay output functions
will be de-activated unless programmed otherwise.

Operating Procedure, continued.
6. Unlatch (rotate in a clockwise direction and pull out) the controller’s red STOP pushbutton and
set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘ON’. Observe that two quick ‘beeps’ are heard
and the ‘TRANSMIT’/‘LOW BATTERY’ indicator momentarily flashes red before changing to
green.
7. Observe the ‘TRANSMIT’/‘LOW BATTERY’ indicator as you operate a non-motion function
toggle switch such as the rear light. If this LED is now flashing green and the target machine’s
rear light illuminates, your remote control system is fully operational.
8. Check each machine function independently and insure the machine responds correctly. Refer to
Switch and Joystick Operating Conventions above for procedures. DO NOT ACTIVATE THE
FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM.
9. When operating hydraulic functions, test the load-locking cylinders by raising the load a few
inches from the floor. If the cylinder will not hold, the load shall be immediately lowered and
not moved until cylinders are adjusted or repaired.
10. When operating any throttle or hydraulic function, proceed slowly and make certain the machine
is under control.
11. If anyone is in the path of travel, stop and clear the area before proceeding.
12. Do not operate the Remote Control Unit from a distance where the machine and all of the
surrounding objects are not fully visible.
13. When leaving the work area for any reason, lower the boom, depress the controller’s red STOP
pushbutton, and set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘OFF’. If a Key Switch is
installed, remove the key from the controller and keep it on your person.

Switch Diagnostic Mode.
In this mode the operator can easily check that all switches and joysticks are fully operational.

WARNING:
ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE TARGET CONTROLLED MACHINE MUST
BE COMPLETELY ISOLATED TO PREVENT OPERATION UNDER
REMOTE CONTROL IN THE SWITCH DIAGNOSTIC MODE.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE WARNING MAY RESULT IN
UNDESIRED MACHINE OPERATION WHICH, IN TURN, COULD RESULT
IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT.

This is accomplished by first turning off power to the controller using the Power ON/OFF Switch.
Then, place the controller on its side with the joysticks parallel to the ground. To enable the switch
diagnostic mode, unlatch (rotate in a clockwise direction and pull out) the controller’s red STOP
pushbutton and set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘ON’ while the controller is in this tilted
position.

This mode of diagnostics activates the beeper when each (1) toggle and pushbutton switch changes state,
and (2) when any motion control joystick changes state.

For example, depress any one of the toggle switches and a single ‘beep’ will be heard. Release the
toggle switch and another single ‘beep’ will be heard as the switch spring returns to center. Repeat this
procedure on the remaining toggle, pushbutton, and rocker switches. If the switches are functioning
correctly, a ‘beep’ will be heard each time the switch changes state.

Operate each motion control joystick about its axis (N, S, E, and W). When a joystick is functioning
correctly, a ‘beep’ will be heard each time the control is moved.

To disable the switch diagnostic mode, set the controller’s Power ON/OFF Switch to ‘OFF’, then re-
apply power to the controller while it is in an upright (normal operating) position.

Ni-Cad Battery Pack Care.
The lifetime of a Ni-Cad Battery Pack is typically specified by the number of complete charge cycles
that it can endure and still yield an acceptable level of capacity. That number can range into thousands
of cycles for high quality Ni-Cad Battery Packs such as the C-8096.
To achieve full life, the Battery Pack must first be fully charged before being installed and not replaced
until a low battery condition is indicated. Upon reaching a low battery state, a Ni-Cad battery pack
must be recharged and not returned to use until the charger indicates that it is fully charged. This
represents a complete charge cycle.
Ni-Cad Battery Packs that are not allowed to complete the full charge cycle described above will
eventually lose their ability to reach full capacity when recharged. Often this loss of capacity is referred
to as ‘memory effect’. It is often possible to revive battery packs that have low capacity by placing
them in a battery analyzer to recondition them. The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ System 90 IQ Plus
‘Smart’ Ni-Cad Battery Charger referred to below can charge, analyze and condition Ni-Cad battery
packs.

Ni-Cad Battery Pack Conditioning/Charging.

Referring to Figure 3-3 above, a Ni-Cad Battery Pack must be removed from the battery compartment
for external charging. Two Battery Chargers are available from your CATTRON-THEIMEG™
representative. These are: (1) The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ System 90 IQ Plus ‘Smart’ Ni-Cad
Battery Charger/Analyzer/Conditioner Charger, and (2) the standard CATTRON-THEIMEG™ 70C-
0004 Desktop Battery Conditioner/Charger.

Option 1 – ‘System 90 IQ Plus’ Battery Charger/Analyzer/Conditioner.

The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ System 90 IQ Plus Charger/Analyzer/Conditioner can charge, analyze
and condition Ni-Cad battery packs as follows:
NOTE: Any fully charged Ni-Cad battery pack that fails to deliver a minimum of 80%
of the rated capacity indicated on its label, should be conditioned in a System 90
IQ Plus Smart Charger. If the battery still yields less than 80% capacity after
conditioning, it should be discarded in a safe manner.
Referring to Figure 3-5, below, this charger can accommodate up to three batteries simultaneously.
Upon powering up the charger, a five-second diagnostic cycle will begin. Following the diagnostic
cycle, the LCD display will blank, unless a battery occupies its related charging station.

CAUTION:
CATTRON-THEIMEG™ System 90 IQ Plus Battery Chargers are designed for
use with CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Ni-Cad Battery Packs only. Failure to comply
with this caution may result in equipment and/or battery damage and will void
our warranty.

Charge Mode (Normal Mode of Operation). Upon inserting a battery for charge, you have
approximately one minute to select the mode of operation via one of three front panel dome switches
located below the associated LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). If you do not select a mode, the charger
will default to a fast charge mode after it completes several automatic tests on the installed battery. To
change modes, remove the battery for 5 seconds and reinstall it, then select a mode within one minute.
The display will indicate when the battery is ready.
A defective battery will be indicated by a ‘BATTERY FAULT’ message. If this occurs, select the
‘Condition’ mode and attempt to condition the battery. If it fails again, the battery should be discarded.
Analyze Mode. Use the Analyze mode to determine a battery's capacity. The battery will first be
brought to a fully charged state, after which it will be discharged. The LCD display will track the
depleted energy in milliampere-hours (mAh) as the battery's charge reduces. The final maximum mAh
value is displayed as the charger then automatically recharges the battery back up to its fully charged
state. Compare the maximum mAh displayed to that printed on the battery's label to judge its actual
capacity. The display will indicate when the battery is ready.
Condition Mode. If a battery is deemed to have unsatisfactory capacity, condition the battery with the
Condition mode. This will initiate three successive charge/discharge cycles followed by a final charge
cycle. The final indicated mAh reading represents the highest potential capacity that can be expected
from the battery when returned to service. The display will indicate when the battery is ready. Note
that a battery that delivers less than 80% of its labeled capacity after conditioning should be discarded.
Section 3, Page 16 ©03/2007, CATTRON-THEIMEG™
Option 1, continued.
Discharge Mode. Use this mode to check another charger's ability to produce capacity in a battery by
comparing the indicated mAh to that produced by this charger with the same battery. The battery will
be automatically recharged and indicate ‘READY’ when completed.
NOTE: Analyzing, Conditioning, or Discharging a Ni-Cad battery unnecessarily will
shorten its useful lifetime.

Option 2 – Standard Desktop Battery Conditioner/Charger.

CAUTIONS:
(1) CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Desktop Battery Conditioners/Chargers are
designed for use with CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Ni-Cad Battery Packs only.
(2) Battery Packs must be removed or disconnected from Battery Conditioners
within 48-hours of achieving the fully charged state.
Failure to comply with these Cautions may result in equipment and/or battery
damage and will void our warranty.

The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ 70C-0004 standard Desktop Battery Conditioner/Charger includes a

Mains VAC Adaptor that allows operation from mains supply voltages between 100 and 240VAC @
50/60 kHz. Referring to Figure 3-6 below, this adaptor is connected as shown. Similarly, when
installing the Ni-Cad Battery Pack to the Charger, refer to Figure 3-6 below for the appropriate locating
instructions.
The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ 70C-0004 Desktop Battery Conditioner/Charger automatically conditions
the battery pack by first discharging it at 600mA for 2-hours before applying a rapid charge for 1-hour.
The Conditioner/Charger incorporates end of charge detection circuitry to accurately sense when the
battery pack is fully charged. When this condition has been detected, the Conditioner/Charger switches
to a ‘trickle’ mode that keeps the battery pack fully charged and ready to use for up to 48-hours. To
prevent damage to the battery pack, it should be removed from the Conditioner/Charger within 48-hours
of achieving a fully charged state.
The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ 70C-0004 Desktop Battery Conditioner/Charger incorporates an LED that
indicates status as follows:
Amber Color – indicates the battery pack is being discharged.
Red Color - indicates the battery pack is being charged at a rapid rate.
Green Color - indicates the battery pack is fully charged and that a ‘trickle’ charge is being
applied to maintain the fully charged state. The battery pack is ready for use and should be
removed from the Conditioner/Charger within 48-hours.

Section 4 – Maintenance Instructions
CATTRON-THEIMEG™ Maintenance Philosophy.
Our maintenance philosophy is that inoperative LHD Controllers are returned as complete units to our
workshops for repair. This is because (a) each controller is customized for a specific control application
which severely restricts component/part interchangeability, (b) the internal circuit board and
microprocessor is extremely sensitive to electrostatic discharge, and (c) internal components are highly
miniaturized and assembled to within very close tolerances.

Troubleshooting.
A basic Troubleshooting Guide is provided overleaf. For safety reasons, when troubleshooting the LHD
controller, the power supply to the controlled machine must be completely isolated to prevent operation
under remote control. However, the other major components of the remote control system (power
supply and receiver/decoder) should be fully operational. The remote control operator should also be
located within 500 feet (160+ meters) of the target receiver/decoder.

Appendix B – Portable Video System Option
Introduction.
The CATTRON-THEIMEG™ 800 series Portable Video System (PVS) is designed to give clear video
pictures of the work zone to an LHD operator who is remote from the equipment he or she is controlling.
When used in this highly popular application, PVS enables the operator to Safely and Accurately
control the LHD machine from a remote, ‘out of harm’s way’, location. In addition, The PVS 800
Receiver/Monitor conveniently uses the same battery packs as the LHD Radio Remote Controller.
Figure A-1 below shows the PVS Receiver/Monitor mounted to the LHD controller.

Cameras.
The basic system uses two high-resolution color cameras, one looking forward and one to the rear. An
optional third camera can be used to view the mucking area and is usually selected by an output from the
operator’s remote control transmitter. All cameras are powered from the Video Transmitter Enclosure
which is mounted on the machine.
Cameras are provided with 3.7 mm wide-angle lenses as standard. Lenses with narrower field of view
angles are also available – contact your CATTRON-THEIMEG™ representative for details.
Each camera is housed in a protective watertight housing to prevent damage from falling debris. The
camera housing is designed to mount to the machine’s fender and allows a 45° angular adjustment about
the vertical axis
NOTE: When used in underground or low ambient lighting applications, the mucking
or working area must be properly illuminated, ideally using sealed beam
Halogen lamps. As a minimum, 4-front lamps and 2-rear lamps are
recommended for effective LHD PVS operation. Some adjustment of beam
direction may also be required.

Cameras, continued.
2-Camera System. Figure B-3 below shows a typical 2-Camera System installation. The suggested
location for the forward camera is on the front fender, so that the remote control operator always has a
view in the direction of the bucket. Always mount the forward camera on the side of the machine
opposite to the driver/operator’s seat so that his or her view is not obscured when manually driving the
machine. Also, this forward camera can be pointed slightly towards the center of the bucket for a better
view. Alternately, both cameras can be located on top of the engine compartment, facing front and rear
respectively.
NOTE: Many operators find that if a small portion of the machine is displayed at the
bottom of the Video Monitor screen, this will add perspective to their view and
they can maneuver the machine more effectively.

Receiver/Monitor.
The Receiver/Monitor combines both the Video Receiver and the color LCD Display in one compact
unit mounted on the remote controller (LHD transmitter). The Receiver/Monitor has a removable
internal battery. A short whip antenna is mounted on the enclosure. Monitor operator controls are a
combined ‘ON/OFF’ and ‘BRIGHTNESS CONTROL’ Switch, and a ‘LOW BATTERY’ Indicator. An
optional Volume Control Switch and mono Earphone Jack are available - contact your CATTRON-
THEIMEG™ representative for details.
Referring to Figure B-5, the Receiver/Monitor conveniently mounts on the existing chrome-plated
Mounting Bar located on top of the LHD Controller. Simply remove the three Screws on the Mounting
Block, slip the block over the Mounting Bar, and replace the screws. Tighten and ‘snug’ the three
screws to the point where the Receiver/Monitor angle can be adjusted. When adjusting the
Receiver/Monitor angle, adequate clearance will be required for the joystick operation.
The Guard Bar at the top of the Receiver/Monitor prevents the switches on the LHD Transmitter from
damaging the LCD display. Also, this guard bar will actuate the ‘STOP’ button (thus stopping the
machine) if the display is folded down and pressure is applied to it.
