SEMESTER 1 SESSION 2020/2021
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Answer ALL QUESTIONS with answers in HANDWRITTING or TYPING.
2. Students are required to UPLOAD their answer scripts on MyGuru within the
specified time.
LECTURE GROUP: A / B / C / D / E
1. Solid materials can be classified into three different categories named crystalline,
polycrystalline and amorphous. Advance studies in material chemistry lead to
development of technology and innovation.
(a) Define the factors that should be taken into consideration when innovating new
materials.
The cost used for innovation.
Design of inovation process
Collaboration
[3 Marks]
(b) What makes crystal is different from amorphous material? Give one example
for each type of materials.
Crystal possesses rigid and long ranged order such as snowflakes while
amorphous made up of randomly onentated and do not have any long-
range order such as silicon.
[3 Marks]
(c) A cubic solid is made of two elements P and Q. All P cations are located at the
corners of the unit cell and six Q anions on the center of all the cubic faces.
[2 Marks]
ii. What is the coordination number of Q?
Coordination number of Q = 12
[1 Mark]
2
iii. What is the formula of the compound? Show your work.
Number of atom p
= 8 x 1/8
=1
Number of atom Q
=6x½
=3
Ratio of p and q = 1 : 3
Formula = PQ 3
[3 Marks]
(c) Thallium bromide (TlBr) has a cesium chloride (CsCl) crystal structure.
i. Draw a unit cell of TlBr and determine the coordination number of Tl+ and Br-
ions.
[2 Marks]
3
iii. Calculate the total number of ions in the cell unit.
1/8 x 8 = 1 ion
1 body = 1 ion
Tibr = 1 : 1
[2 Marks]
iv. It is true that the edge length (a) of this crystal lattice is 2.31 times the radius
(r) of the ions in the crystal? Justify your answer.
[2 Marks]
v. If the crystal has edge length (a) of 36.5 cm, calculate density of the crystal.
[3 Marks]
iii. (1 0 2)
iv. (0 2 1)
v. (2 0 2)
[5 Marks]
[3 Mark]
(d) Zinc sulphide (ZnS) has two common polymorphs which is sphalerite and
wurtzite.
[2 Marks]
ii. By using your own illustration, briefly explain two most common atom
orientations that generate close-packed lattice.
[3 Marks]
3. Quantum numbers describe the energy level of an orbital and define the shape and
orientation of the region in space where the electron is most likely to be found.
(a) What are the similarities and the difference between:
i. a 1s orbitals and a 3s orbitals
[2 Marks]
(b) The highest energy electrons in an atom Q have the principal quantum number
n = 4 and the angular quantum number l = 0. What is the maximum number of
electrons present in atom Q?
[3 Marks]
[4 Marks]
(d) The proton number of titanium is 22. Three electronic configurations are written
for titanium, as listed below.
[1 Mark]
