THE WORLD IN PROGRESS
Undoubtedly, globalization has provided aid and tons of benefits to
developed, developing as well as under-developed nations; however, there are some
disadvantages as well that I somehow learned while reading and researching about the chapters
that was assign to us. I will discuss the things that I learned about globalization in the following
paragraphs.
First, is about global population and mobility. For me, if we talk about
mobility it means how well does one nation make use of its resources to provide and take control
of the situations at hand. It is in cities that global operations are centralized and where we can see
the changes or phenomena associated with their activities. It does not only create numerous
chance for jobs but also for mischievous deeds. This place is often called Global City; it is a city
which is a primary ode in the global economic network. There are three key tendencies that seem
to follow from these structural facts about global cities. One is a concentration of wealth in the
hands of owners, partners, professionals associated with the high-end firms in the system. Two,
is a growing disconnection between the city and its region. Third, is the growth of large
marginalized population that has a very hard time earning a living in the marketplace defined by
these high-end activities. That alone you can assess that somehow what globalization is doing is
making the poor cities poorer and rich cities richer.
In connection to this people tend to migrate to other countries to find
better opportunity while leaving their country to stay as it is. Most, developing countries are
usually having a hard time to develop because their best workers are already flying out their
country because they cannot support their needs. So situation is beginning to be much worse
unlike the developed country talented people come for their aid which also gives them the upper
hand than other countries. For example, Philippines is considered as a developing country. That
is why many of our fellow brethren fly off to different places in the world to work and enhance
their talents. We call them OFWs (Overseas Filipino Worker). Their life is not easy but they
work not for themselves but for the families that they have left behind. You might say that the
worlds’ system is horrible however this is reality.
Second, is the idea of having a sustainable world. Companies play a
massive role and a crucial one as well. Responsible production and consumption will be the only
ways of moving from a situation where we develop while destroying the planet to a situation
where we develop in harmony with the planet. Change is possible through green innovation,
corporate behavior, regulation, and consumer pressure. But business is already moving in that
direction and beginning to see corporate environmental and social responsibility as more than
useful, nice, or something they have to do because customers ask for it. Increasingly, companies
are looking at environmental sustainability and their contribution to it as an absolute must for the
long-term viability of their own businesses.
Whether we’re talking about water resources and how businesses are
affected by water scarcity and water pollution, or about scarcity of other resources the raw
materials that are absolutely essential for production systems businesses understand that it is
absolutely imperative that we come together to support a sustainable development agenda,
because ultimately, everybody will be affected. And businesses will probably be affected first. In
fact, many companies have realized this and are at the forefront of innovating their production
systems. However, there are still places that are not capable of doing the other countries can do
and afford.
Lastly, because of globalization we are now living in a diverse society
however the world system is not always unfair. Some are well aware of the mistreat that some of
us do not care about. A Global Citizen is someone who Is aware of the wider world and has a
sense of their own role as a world citizen. The world we live in is unfair, unequal and global
citizenship promotes the challenging and changing of this. We may think that everything is okay
but we should at least do our part and be more aware that some of us is using their power to gain
wealth and leaving us unattended. We live in an interdependent world and Global Citizenship
encourages us to recognize our responsibilities towards each other. Global Citizenship
acknowledges that we have power as individuals each of us can change things and each of us has
choices about how we behave.
After analyzing the benefits as well as the drawbacks of globalization, it
can be concluded that although globalization has resulted in some disadvantages, yet its benefits
can never be ignored. Governments and natives should see the benefits of globalization and work
wholeheartedly to transform its negatives into positives.
