Proportion of households with Internet access rose to 41,6%

10.00 According to the results of ICT Usage Survey in Households and Individuals carried out in April,
2010, 41,6 per cent of households have access to the Internet at home. It was 30,0 per cent in
April, 2009.

The main reason for households not having access to the Internet at home was “have no need”
with 26,3 per cent. ADSL was the most widely used Internet connection type with 73,3 per cent in
Turkey.

Computer and Internet use are growing

According to the results of ICT Usage Survey in Households and Individuals while proportions of
the male that use computer and Internet were 53,4% and 51,8%, these proportions were 33,2%
and 31,7% for female, respectively in 16-74 age group. These rates were 50,5% and 48,6% for
male and 30,0% and 28,0% for female in previous year, respectively.

Three out of five Internet users use the Internet every day or
almost every day
When individuals were asked time of the last use of the computer and the Internet, 39,1 per cent
of the individuals in 16-74 age group has used computer and 37,6 per cent of the individuals has
used Internet in the period of January-March 2010. While 60,8 per cent of the individuals use
computer every day, this proportion were 59,3 per cent in the usage of the Internet.

Individuals’ use of the computer and the Internet mostly at home
The location of use for individuals using a computer was chiefly at home (70 per cent), while 31,3 per
cent in the workplace, 17,5 per cent at Internet café. These proportions were 62,8 per cent at home,
31,6 per cent in the work place, 20 per cent at Internet café for the location of Internet usage.

The highest proportion of computer and Internet usage was at 16-24 age groups. For all age groups,
proportions of computer and Internet usage for males were higher than females. When computer and
Internet usage are ordered by education level, individuals graduated from higher education use
computer and Internet at the highest level.

The employers have higher degree of computer and Internet usage


By considering the employment situation, proportion of computer and Internet use were 69,2 per cent
and 67,8 per cent respectively for employer. These proportions were 62,6 per cent and 60,5 per cent
for regular or casual employee and 50 per cent and 48,2 per cent for unemployed, respectively.

Sending and receiving e-mail is the most frequent activity in the


Internet
The most popular activity of the individuals who have accessed to the Internet in the period of
January-March 2010 for private purpose was sending and receiving e-mail with 72,8 per cent. Other
popular activities were as follows: Posting messages to chat sites, social networking sites, blogs,
news groups or online discussion forum, use of instant messaging (64,2 per cent), reading or
downloading online news, news papers, news magazines (58,8 per cent), finding information about
goods or services (55,7 per cent), playing or downloading games, images, films or music (51,2 per
cent).

Clothes and sports goods were purchased over the Internet


15,0 per cent of individuals who have accessed to the Internet purchased goods or services over the
Internet for private purposes. When individuals asked the last purchased goods or services over the
Internet, 9,0 per cent in the last three month, 3,6 per cent between three months and a year ago and
2,5 per cent for more than one year ago. 85,0 per cent of individuals who have accessed to the
Internet had never purchased any goods or services over the Internet for private purposes.

The most popular purchases over the Internet were clothes and sports goods with 24,3 per cent in the
last 12 months (April 2009-March 2010). This is followed by electronic equipment (23,8 per cent),
household goods (19,3 per cent), travel arrangements such as transport tickets and car hire (15,2 per
cent), food or groceries (13,3 per cent ). Electronic equipment was the most popular purchases over
Internet with 32,2 per cent for the same period of the previous year.

One of two Internet users experienced security related problems

through Internet
46,8 per cent of Internet users experienced security related problems through Internet for their own
private purposes in the last 12 months. The most important problems faced by Internet users were
catching a virus or other computer infection (e.g. worm or Trojan horse) with 36,4 per cent and
receiving unsolicited e-mail (spam) with 32 per cent.

58,1 per cent of Internet users use IT security software or tool in order to protect private computer or
data.
