PETRODEBATE COMPETITION APECX

2019 PROPOSAL
A. INTRODUCTION

Annual Petroleum Competition and Exhibition (APECX) 2019 is an annual

event of Society of Petroleum Engineers Universitas Gadjah Mada Student Chapter
(SPE UGM SC) starting its debut in 2019. Previously named Petrochallenge, this
year’s event will be the 3rd and only competition based event held by SPE UGM SC.
This year’s theme will be “Escalating Cognition to Build up the Future Petroleum
Industry” with a purpose to serve as a platform for fellow undergraduates to express
concerns regarding today’s petroleum industry challenges as well as building up the
future of petroleum industry. APECX 2019 consists of several pre-events which are
World Clean Up Day, SPE Teaching, Mangrove Social Activity, SPE Medical Check
Up and Grand Seminar, with 4 intellectual competitions which are PetroChina Paper
and Poster Competition, Petrodebate Competition, Petrosmart Competition, and
Survey Design Competition.
Petrodebate Competition will be conducted with the theme ‘Energy in
General'. This theme is based on the fact that energy is very dynamic and it always
has different challenges over time. To overcome these challenges, a sustainable
comprehensive solver is required. Hopefully, through this competition, many students
are encouraged to hone their critical thinking and problem solving skill as well as
creativity to solve many kinds of issues in energy.

B. PURPOSES
1. Improving the ability to critically analyze a problem in energy and propose
workable solutions
2. Developing participant’s ability to deliver opinion logically and systematically
3. Improving public speaking ability

D. EVENT DESCRIPTION
1. Format Competition
1) There will be 4 round of competition consist of Preliminary Round I,
Preliminary Round II, Preliminary Round III, and Final.
a) Preliminary Round I, Preliminary Round II, and Preliminary Round III
All of the teams will compete in the Preliminary Round I,II, and III.
b) Final
The teams that will compete in this round are the first two teams that
have highest cumulative score. This round will determine the 2nd winner also
the 1st winner of this debate competition.
2) Timing of speeches
- The speaking time for substantive speeches is 7 minutes
- The speaking time for reply speeches is 5 minutes
3) Scoring
The rank will be determined based on :
- Victory points
- Amount of point each rounds
- Amount of margin
4) Reward
1st winner = Certificate + Rp.3.000.000
2nd winner = Certicate + Rp. 2.000.000
Best speaker = Certificate + Rp. 500.000
2. Judging
1) In each round, there will be 3 judges that will judging the debate competition.
For the preliminary round I,II,and III, the judges consists of 2 adjudicators and
1 professional judge. Meanwhile, for the final round the judges consists of 1
adjudicator and 2 professional judges. Mainly, the judges have three
responsibilities :
a) to decide which team has won the debate
b) to provide an explanation of the reasons for the decision
c) to provide constructive feedback to the debaters.
 2) Judging Criteria
a) Matter
Refers to the content of the speeches,includes arguments and evidence
used to elaborate the arguments.
b) Method
Refers to the structure and organisation of the speeches,includes the
management of speaking time and strategy to adapt to the debate.
c) Manners
Refers to the presentation style of the speeches, includes the body
language and the vocal style of the speakers.
