Section B
[10 marks]
Questions 16-25
Read the following information and answer the questions that follow.
Section C
[25 marks]

Questions 26-31are based on the following passage.

The passage below is about how a good, positive attitude helps people to deal with the problems of
daily life.

Life had not always been easy at home. Mother worked hard at home and father was often
away on business for days. Money was scarce but we managed with simple meals and basic
things we needed in life.
2 When I was a child, my mum liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and
then. I remember one night in particular when she had made dinner after a long, hard day at 5
work. On that evening so long ago, my mum placed a plate of eggs, sausages and extremely
burnt biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all my
dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mum and ask me how my day was at school. I
don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter
and jam on that biscuit and eat every bite! 10
3 When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mum apologise to
my dad for burning the biscuits. I will never forget what he said: “Dear, I love the burnt
biscuits”. Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked
his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your Momma put in a hard day’s
work today and she’s real tired. And besides – a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!” 15
4 He told me, “Life is full of imperfect things…..and imperfect people. I’m not the best at
everything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I’ve
learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s faults – and choosing to
celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy,
growing, and lasting relationship. I am away so often that I need to have a happy family 20
behind me. I need to know that you all are well when I am far away. What harm can a few
burnt biscuits do?”
5 “I never get to spend enough time with you and mum. I am not going to spoil the days I
am here by being angry about burnt biscuits. I would like you to know something about
handling problems in a positive way. There will be many problems that will come our way. 25
We can choose to be bitter or make things better and all that lies in our hands only. You
must learn to take the good, the bad and the ugly parts of your life and accept them as part
of life. You must realise that a burnt biscuit isn’t a big deal. You can extend this to any
relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or
parent-child or friendship! 30
6 There are so many things I would like to share with you. I would like you to know that
one should never put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket - keep it in your
own. Remember, son, the world will not always offer you encouragement. Often you must
supply your own. Many times, you will have good reason to feel sorry for yourself. Yet you
can just as easily choose to feel encouraged about yourself. Reach deep and find the 35
goodness that is always there, the goodness you may have forgotten about. You are worthy
and relevant, effective and capable of the very best. Remind yourself often.
7 Keep in mind that every disappointment is temporary. We can overcome every and any
kind of frustration. There is every reason to persist, to endure and to move forward with the
most positive of expectations. Because deep within, you know you can.” 40
8 That night I slept better. I knew my father cared about me and my mum. He had also
taught me some valuable lessons that I will never forget.

Question 32
Read the poemA Poison Treeand answer the questions that follow. (5%)

A Poison Tree
I was angry with my friend;
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,

Night & morning with my tears:
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night.

Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine.

And into my garden stole,

When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see;
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
