WHAT DOES GOD SAY ABOUT SIN?

Ps 25:7-18
7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy
goodness' sake, O LORD.
8 Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
11 For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
12 What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
13 His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.
14 The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.
15 Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.
16 Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses.
18 Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.

I. THE BIBLE TELLS US WHAT SIN IS.

A. We sin when we fail to follow God’s commands.
1. 1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the
law.[The law of liberty in Christ.]

2. 1 John 5:17a All unrighteousness is sin:

3. 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this
purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

4. Ex 32:30-31 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a
great sin : and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have
made them gods of gold.

5. 2 Kings 21:16 Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from
one end to another; beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the
sight of the LORD.

6. Neh 13:26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no
king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even
him did outlandish women cause to sin .

7. James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity
with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

8. 1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the
world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the
lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth
away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

B. We sin when we fail to do what we know is right.

1. James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

1
2. James 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as
transgressors.

II. THE BIBLE TELLS US THE EXACT MOMENT WE BECOME SINNERS.

A. It starts with a flaw in our own thinking process.
1. James 1:13-15 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted
with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his
own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is
finished, bringeth forth death.

2. Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are
to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
(When we yield to satan.)

3. Acts 8:18-23 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was
given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he
may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast
thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter:
for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if
perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of
bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

B. We are responsible for our sins.

1. Ezek 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither
shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the
wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

C. To enter the kingdom of heaven, we must be pure from sin.

1. Matt 18:1-3 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said,
Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into
the kingdom of heaven.

2. 1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but
we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man
that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

3. Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this
present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our
Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and
purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

III. THE BIBLE TELLS US WHO HAS SINNED.

A. The answer cannot be misunderstood.
1. Rom 3:10-12 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth,
there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become
unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

2. Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

2
3. Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ
might be given to them that believe.

IV. THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF THE RESULTS OF SIN.

A. Nothing good comes of sin.
1. Eph 2:1-2 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past
ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the
spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

2. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our
Lord.

3. John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he,
ye shall die in your sins.

4. 2 Thess 1:7-9 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from
heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and
that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

5. Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid
his face from you, that he will not hear.
