(i) This question paper comprises four Sections – A, B, C and D.

each.

24. What are coherent sources? Give an example. (2)
25. Define electric flux. Determine the electric flux through an area of 200 units in the y-z
plane if an electric field 𝐸⃗ = 2𝑖̂ + 3𝑗̂ − 𝑘̂ exists in that region. (2)
26. Find out the self-energy of an electric dipole of length L and dipole moment p. (2)
27. Draw the equipotential surface for a dipole and justify it. (2)

Section C
28. A double convex lens has faces of radii 15cm and 16cm. When an object is placed 30cm
from the lens, the image is formed at 40cm from the lens. Find the focal length of the lens
and the refractive index of the material of the lens. (1 + 2)
29. A beam of light is converging towards a point. A plane glass plate of thickness t and
refractive index µ is introduced in the path of the beam. How will the point of
convergence shift? Use a ray diagram to illustrate. (3)
30. A slit of width ‘d’ is illuminated by light of wavelength 6000Å. For what value of ‘d’ will
(i) the first maximum fall at an angle of 300? (ii) First minimum fall at an angle of 300?

31. State Gauss’ law of electrostatics.
An electric field exists only along the x axis as follows:

32. An electric dipole has the magnitude of its dipole moment p = 2qa. If it is placed in a
uniform electric field E, obtain an expression for its potential energy U when it makes an

33. Two positive point charges are placed a distance apart in vacuum. Draw the lines of force
and equipotential surfaces for the resulting electric field. (1 + 2)
34. Can the electric field intensity at a point be non-zero if the electric potential is zero at that
point? Is the converse possible? Justify your answer with examples. (3)

35. What is interference of light? Write the conditions for constructive and destructive
interference of light waves.

36. Use Gauss’ law to find out how the electric field inside and outside an infinitely long
charged cylinder depends on distance r from the centre of the sphere. Draw a graph to

37. Find out the self-energy of a spherical distribution of charge having radius R and volume
charge density ρ. Also find the potential at a distance r (r < R) from the centre of the
spherical distribution of charge. (2 + 3)
