USING NUTRITIONAL MEDICINES

D id you know there are nutritional and complementary
medical treatments available to treat mental health
problems? Anxiety, bipolar, depression, eating disorders and
even schizophrenia can be managed and treated successfully
with natural medicines.
You see the ads on TV for medications to treat depression. We
hear the stories of growing numbers of children with autism or
attention deficit. It seems no matter where you turn someone
is either taking a prescription drug or is looking to get off a
psychiatric medication. Some current national statistics:
• There has been a 35 fold increase in children disabled with
mental illness.
• Approximately 40 million Americans age 18 and older have
an anxiety crisis in a given year.
• Approximately 15% of adults will experience severe
depressed moods during their lifetime with about 15%
of these adults committing suicide. Suicide is also the 3rd
leading cause of death in youth aged 15 to 24 years old.
• Eating disorders, such as Anorexia Nervosa, have the
highest mortality rate of any mental health illness at 10% at
10 years and 20% at 20 years. Anorexia also has the highest
risk of suicide among ALL psychiatric illnesses.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the alarming
statistics regarding mental health issues in our country, and the
problem is getting worse. According to James M. Greenblatt, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer of Walden Behavioral Care and Assistant
Professor at Tufts Medical School and author of Answers to
Anorexia states that “there is not one drug approved for the
treatment of anorexia” despite the fact that these individuals are
commonly placed on medications that have little to no effect.
Nutritional medicine may hold the key to many individuals
suffering with one of these debilitating disorders. There are a
variety of examples to prove this point. Here are just a few that
are important to consider:
• Amino acid deficiencies can predispose an individual to
imbalanced brain chemistry. For example, tryptophan is
a precursor for serotonin which if inadequate can leave

individuals feeling depressed, moody, and anxious. In 2009,
in the Archives of General Psychiatry, it was reported that
over 27 million people were prescribed antidepressants, or
more than 10% of the US population. Many of these drugs
are the common SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake
Inhibitors) like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Lexapro.
• Folate and B12 imbalances are often prevalent in
depression. Replacing these vitamins in therapeutic levels
can have a beneficial effect on mood and mental function.
• Zinc deficiency has been recognized for years in the Eating
Disorder community, particularly those with Anorexia
Nervosa. Zinc supports brain chemistry. With chronically
low zinc the function of digestion, taste, growth and
immune function are all impaired. Zinc also has a role in
how the brain learns, perceives, and interprets information
such as fear and stress.
According to Dr. Greenblatt and others, this disorder is
classically a disease of starvation and the subsequent problems
such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive behavior, rigidity and
perseveration of thought can lead to suicidal tendencies and are
the result of a starved brain from a lack of nutrients. In reality,
this can be said of most mental health problems, and in our
experience is absolutely true.
This article is not meant to insinuate that traditional psychiatry
and various medications have no role in mental health treatment.
Obviously, these disorders are complex and multi-factorial with
respects to causation. However, the complete lack of awareness
within much of the traditional medical community regarding
nutritional medicine is shocking and tragic. Too many people
continue to suffer with mental health disorders who can be
helped – and in many cases recovered – when the appropriate
diagnostic tests and nutritional and complementary therapies
are employed. It is time to shift the paradigm in assessment and
treatment for the millions of individuals needlessly suffering
from these debilitating disorders and once again look to a more
comprehensive and balanced approach that nutritional medicine
has to offer.

According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, that’s the
distance the average gray whale swims in its lifetime.
Yet how many of us who live within an hour’s drive of the coast
take the opportunity to see these amazing, gentle giants as they
make their yearly 10,000-mile migration between the warm
Pacific waters of Baja Mexico and their frigid arctic feeding
grounds?
Grab your jackets and deck shoes and head out to Oceanside
Harbor because December through early April is whale-
watching season.
“We’re seeing gray whales all the time now,” said Captain Jerry
Kohler, a veteran pilot of the sport fishing vessels for Helgren’s
Sportfishing which has been providing whale watching tours out
of the harbor for many years.
“We started seeing them around December 26, and it’s been a
pretty good season so far for whale watching.”
The excursions usually last for two hours and since it only takes
five minutes to get out past the Oceanside Harbor, the whale
watching can commence fairly quickly. During the week, there
are usually two tours a day, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with three tours
on Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m.

Along the way, all kinds of ocean-dwelling critters like dolphins,
sea lions, birds, even other species of whales can be spotted,
turning the excursions into “real sea life adventures,” said Kohler,
adding that that Helgren’s whale watch captains also provide a
narrative about cetaceans along the way.
The stars of the show, the Pacific gray whales make the longest
migration known to mammals, often cruising slowly through
nearshore waters at a speed of two to six miles per hour. Nearly
hunted to extinction twice in the last 150 years, an international
ban on the commercial harvest of gray whales was put in place
in 1946. Further marine mammal protection and endangered
species laws in the early 1970s continued to safeguard the
population and it has since rebounded to around 20,000,
perhaps nearly as many as existed before the heyday of whaling,
say marine life experts.

upon the day of the week, excursion time, group sizes, and ages,
so be sure to inquire about ticket costs before booking your tour.

The Pride of Italy
in the Inland Empire

R estaurants abound in the Southwest Riverside County,
giving us a plethora of dining choices. If you are in the
mood for a taste of Italy, I highly recommend That’s Amore
Cucina Italiana in Hemet. Sicilian born, Chef Carlo Di Gristina
offers a menu of authentic dishes that are on par with the finest
Italian restaurants in the region.
His diligence for creating mouthwatering cuisine is evident
with his insistence of using the highest quality ingredients
available. Chef Carlo carefully selects the best meat and
seafood to masterfully blend with an array of spices and pastas
to really “WOW” the senses. Fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables
are among the many staples in his exhibition kitchen. The
superior quality of his ingredients bodes well to Chef Carlo’s
stellar reputation for creating only the finest Italian fare.
The restaurant is comfortable and inviting. The interior is
accented with solid stonework and pillars, complemented with
wood lattice and arches. The

I have been a frequent
visitor at That’s Amore. I
can attest to the consistency
of delicious menu items
prepared to absolute excellence. In addition to his extensive
lunch and dinner menus, Chef Carlo keeps guests coming back
with a variety of unique daily specials.
During a recent visit, my husband and I enjoyed a flavorful four-
course dinner. Our meal began with two hors d’ oeuvres – the
garden fresh Bruschetta Napoletana and Caponata Siciliana.

The Caponata was the superstar of this course. The tapenade
was a cool blend of eggplant, green olives, celery, onions, and
capers in a sweet and tangy sauce. A spoonful atop a slice of
toasted Italian bread was simply delectable.
Before the main course, we enjoyed a special spinach salad
created by Chef Carlo during the past holiday season. He
dressed up the healthy greens with candied walnuts, mandarin
oranges, grapefruit, red onion and crumbled gorgonzola
cheese. As a finishing touch, he drizzled the salad with a wild
berry vinaigrette making it irresistibly delicious.
We both chose an entrée from the list of daily specials. My
husband was quite pleased with his Vald’ Ostana, an enormous
bone-in stuffed pork chop. Inside the succulent meat was a
blend of prosciutto and Fontina cheese. The sizzling hot chop
was topped by a sherry-infused hearty mushroom sauce. This
dish was served with fresh vegetables and penne pasta in a
creamy tomato sauce.
As a seafood lover, I opted for the Stuffed Shrimp entrée, a
decision that I did not regret. Each prawn was filled with
delicate lump crab meat and then baked in a rich piccata sauce.
A generous portion of Alfredo penne pasta was a welcomed
addition to the dish. Perfectly al dente garden vegetables made
the whole meal come together with a delightful freshness.
The fourth and final course was a Cassata Siciliana, best
described as a spumoni flavored ice-cream cake. It was
presented with a raspberry chocolate sauce and garnished with
mint. Capturing a traditional flavor, this light treat was the
perfect ending to the gourmet meal.

VEGAN LA BÊTE NOIRE
“THE BLACK BEAST”
This rich, dense cake is a chocolate lover’s paradise. It is normally made with a ton of eggs and heavy cream and although my version is
not exactly low-cal it is way better for you than the original and the flavor is identical (if not better). The best part is that because there
is no egg in this recipe it is almost fool proof. A first-time baker can pull this off, I promise. If you have a nut allergy the crust can be
omitted, just line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper. I can’t think of a better dessert to come home to on Valentine’s Day than
fresh strawberries and a Vegan La Bête Noire.

CRUST CAKE CHOCOLATE GANACHE

2 Cups Blanched Almonds
1/4 Cup Melted Vegan Butter
1/4 Cup Organic Brown Sugar
A 9"-10" Spring Form Pan
1 1/2 Cup Extra Strong Coffee or Espresso 1 Cup Soy or Almond Milk (unsweetened)
1/2 Cup Organic White Sugar 12oz Semisweet Chocolate Chips
1/3 Cup Vegan Butter (Ghirardelli chocolate chips are perfect)
1 Pound Chopped Bittersweet Chocolate
(use the best chocolate available that contains no milk 70%+ Cocoa)
1 (14oz) Block Silken Tofu
2 Tbsp Corn Starch

FOR THE CRUST

• Toast the almonds in a large pan over high heat. Keep moving
the almonds around (Jiffy Pop style) until you see color on the
almonds.
• Lower the heat to medium and continue to agitate the almonds
until they are a uniform light brown. Place the nuts on a plate
to cool.
• When the almonds are cool place them in a food processor and
chop them into a fine meal. (About 30 seconds)
• In a medium bowl mix the ground almonds, butter and sugar
with a fork.
• Secure the sides of a 9"-10" spring form pan.
• Using the back of a spoon, spread the crust mixture all over the
bottom of the pan.
• This crust does not need to be pre-baked.
FOR THE CAKE
• Preheat the oven to 350º.
• Wrap three layers of foil around the bottom outside of the
spring form pan.
• Be sure the foil covers the entire outside of the pan. (This is to
prevent water from penetrating)
• Using a double boiler, whisk the coffee and sugar until the
sugar is dissolved.
• Add the chocolate and butter and stir until the mixture is
combined and the chocolate is fully melted.
• In a food processor, puree the tofu, corn starch, and chocolate
mixture until smooth.
• Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
• Place the spring form pan in large roasting pan or hotel pan.
• Place the two pans inside the oven.
• Using a pitcher, carefully add enough hot water to the outside
pan to come halfway up sides of the cake.
• Gently push the outside pan, when the center of the cake is no
longer wobbly the cake is done. About 45 minutes.
• Carefully remove both pans from the oven.
• Then remove the cake from the water bath and carefully
remove the foil as well.
• Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.
FOR THE GANACHE
• In a small saucepan over medium heat bring the soy or almond
milk to a simmer.
• Remove the milk from the heat.
• Add the chocolate chips and whisk until completely melted
and smooth.
• Leaving the cake in the pan; pour just enough Grenache to
cover the top of the cake. Save the remaining Ganache for
another use. (Truffles)
• Refrigerate the cake in the pan until Ganache is set, about two
hours.
• The cake can be made up to three days ahead. Cover and keep
refrigerated.
CUTTING THE CAKE
• Run a warm knife around the edges of the pan to loosen the
cake before releasing the sides.
• Score the cake in half and then into quarters.
• Warm a thin knife under hot water and dry the blade.
• Cut one quarter of the cake and then cut that quarter into four
equal pieces.
• Serve with fresh berries.

he winter rains have filled up the local lakes again, the fish
T are fat and fine, and the conditions are perfect for angler
nirvana.
“Fishing conditions are absolutely the best that they’ve been in
a long time,” said Art Berry, a highly respected fishing guide
and professional bass tournament winner who knows Southern
California’s lakes like the inside of his tackle box. “Water levels
are up and because the rains have filled up the banks now, there
are a lot of nutrients in the lakes for feeding the fish. It’s going
to be a great year for catching fish!”
If it’s largemouth bass you’re after, Diamond Valley Lake is
considered a premier site for catching one of those giants.
The 4,500-acre lake, which is the largest freshwater reservoir
in southern California, opened in 2003, but it has already
produced largemouth bass over the 10-pound range, including
a record breaker in 2007 weighing more than 16 pounds. In
recently years, DVL has secured a reputation as a world-class
largemouth bass fishery, with more than fifty bass tournaments
taking place on the lake annually.
“One major key to growing those giant bass are the 160-foot to
260-foot deep channels running through the lake,” said Berry,
so if you’re planning on fishing by boat at DVL, you’d better
forget about a leisurely time on the lake, and instead plan on
keeping your boat on the move because “the fish are always
moving,” said Berry.

And those bass are darn smart too.
“The bass feed on rainbow trout,” Berry said, “and when the
trucks come to unload the new stocks for rainbow trout in the
lake, the bass hear the beeping sounds that the trucks make
while backing up. And they race over to where the trout is
being unloaded!”
But don’t despair if it’s not your day to catch one of the big bass
whoppers because there’s plenty of good-sized smallmouth
bass (catch and release only), red ear sunfish, bluegill, blue and
channel catfish, crappie, tule perch and rainbow trout at DVL.
The lake is open daily from 6:00 am - 6:30 pm., and all anglers
must display a current California fishing license.
According to Berry, Southwest Riverside County fishing sites
like Lake Skinner, Lake Perris, Vail Lake and Lake Elsinore
should also be luring in anglers for good fishing.
“Vail and Skinner are great spots, and I have clients who love
to fish in those lakes,” said Berry. “Vail is about 1,100 acres and
it’s got bass, rainbow trout, catfish and panfish. The same with
Skinner which is about 1,200 acres, but what a lot of people
don’t know about Skinner is that it’s a great place to catch frogs
if you love to eat frog legs.”
If fishing from the shore is your thing, there’s plenty of
opportunity at other area lakes for that, too.

W ho ever thought that watching race cars get down and
dirty could be so much fun?
The odds are that’s what you’ll discover if you find yourself
at any of the car racing events at the Perris Auto Speedway’s
premier dirt track this year!
So forget about it if you didn’t fess up to your speedway-bound
date that you’ve never understood why souped-up hot rods
constantly looping an oval track is such a big deal. Or that you
think your motor sport-loving friends’ passion about the wildly
popular 800-plus horsepower, open-wheel machines known as
the USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Car is, well, a little exhausting.
Just give it up because you won’t be able to help getting swept
up by the noisy, high-powered crazy action going on at the
speedway’s half-mile clay track. The wheel-spinning and head-
turning thrills are contagious when you root for drivers in
revved-up stock cars, and sprint cars navigate the dirt track
at breakneck speeds and gaspingly tight corners all the while
trying not to “tag the cushion” (hit the wall) or do a “big bicycle
upside down” (roll, baby, roll).
But don’t forget the wildest of the wild cards, the X-factor that
is the dirt track itself, says Perris Auto Speedway president Don
Kazarian. Or, to glamorize it just a bit, the “clay-mixed-with-
dirt” track.

“Most people don’t know this because it’s not publicized as
much, but dirt racing is just as popular, if not more popular, in
this country as motor sport events on asphalt-covered tracks,”
said Kazarian.
“Racing on a dirt track like Perris Auto Speedway is so different
than on asphalt because it’s never in the same condition day after
day because the weather changes all the time,” he explained.
“The state of the dirt track is the big surprise element in the
races. You never know whether to expect that the track will
be nice and perfectly tacky or too heavy after rainfall or like
hardpan soil when the weather is 105 degrees.”
Located at Perris Fairgrounds, the Perris Auto Speedway began
holding races in 1996. “It is the only dirt track between San
Diego and Orange County,” said Kazarian, adding that the
events at the Perris oval can draw between two thousand and
three thousand fans per show from those counties, Riverside
and San Bernardino, but also from Los Angeles, Central
California and Arizona.
During the March through November 2011 season, the
speedway will be hosting racing events with stock cars—super,
street, factory, and modified—and CDCRA Dwarf cars.

and a prize.
For decorations go simple: white crisp table cloths, wood cutting
board, baskets, a few candle sticks, votives holders filled with
corks or wrapped in old labels. Make sure to have plenty of
French bread and water crackers on hand - something mild so
as to not interfere with the cheese and wine flavors. Depending
on your crowd you may want to have some additional platters
of food ready to go after your tasting. Something simple you
can pull out of the fridge…. carry on your picnic idea with cold
grilled chicken, a salad and a platter of brownies.
So take this season of love to a new level by not just
sharing it with the one you love, but all that you love in
the months to come.

and water. Once everyone has arrived, you will have a beautiful
arrangement that is as unique as your guests.

F eeling a bit housebound after the gray days of winter? Then
it’s definitely time to start packing in plans for some quality
living time in the Great Outdoors this year.
Luckily for residents of the Temecula Valley and surrounding
communities there are several campgrounds that are both close
enough to be a convenient drive and far enough to get away from
it all!
So, if you are dreaming about relaxing around a campfire or
hitting the hiking trails, here are just of few of the many local
camping areas located in Southwest Riverside County:
VAIL LAKE RESORT
Located about ten miles east of Old Town Temecula on Hwy. 79
South, Vail Lake Resort offers an outdoor experience for RV’ers
and tent campers beside Vail Lake, an 1,100-acre fresh water
reservoir. There are more than five hundred campsites on the
grounds, and the surrounding 9,000 pristine acres are dotted by
ancient oak trees and scrub chaparral.
Boating, fishing and water sports activities rights on the privately-
owned lake are reserved for annual members only, but RV access
is open to the public with a paid nightly reservation or a day use
pass. Tent camping sites are also available for additional fees.

If you need to cool off, there is a water slide and three pools at the
resort - a children’s swimming pool, a wading pool and an adult
swimming pool.
The main hub of the RV resort is the Vail Lake Village, about two
miles west of the lake. If you want to kick up your heels, there
is a wine and beer bar on Friday and Saturday nights, nightly
entertainment on holidays, and great tacos from a Mexican grill!

LAKE SKINNER RECREATION AREA,
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
It may be extra crowded for the annual Balloon & Wine Festival,
but for the rest of the year, Lake Skinner offers a lot of camping
room.
About ten miles north of Temecula off Rancho California Road,
it’s an enjoyable cruise through Temecula wine country to
the Lake Skinner Recreational Area. The campground itself is
another quarter-mile past the main gate.
There are 158 sites with full hook-ups, 16 with water & electric,
39 with water only, with a total 300 developed campsites for both
tent and RV campers. There are three major campsite areas, and
the majority of the RVs are in sites B and C, with tent campers
in site A. Full hookups and showers are available, along with a
convenient camp store.
Groups can choose from several settings, including two new
mini-group areas in Campground C and a separate, reservations
available at sites overlooking the lake. Although the lake is the
main attraction, there is no body contact allowed in it because
it is a domestic water supply. Private boats are allowed, but there
are some restrictions. Fishing is very popular here and you can
rent 4-person boats or 10-person pontoons for the day.
Several new amenities include a water splash play area, a multi-
use trail, and a state of the art amphitheatre. Other features
include a public swimming pool which is open from Memorial
Day through Labor Day. There are also hiking and nature trails
all over the lake area. The recreational area also offers day-use
areas for picnics and BBQs.
If you are the kind of camper who enjoys an open spaced
atmosphere, making friends with his or her campsite neighbors,
and who likes to be close to great wineries, then the Lake Skinner
Recreational Area is right for you!

LAKE PERRIS STATE PARK RECREATIONAL
AREA CAMPGROUND, PERRIS
With an average attendance of 1.1 million visitors, Lake Perris is
Southern California’s most popular recreation destinations. The
lake itself is three miles long and two miles across with about ten
miles of accessible shoreline. The campground consists of 167
sites for tent camping (non-hookup sites) and 264 paved sites
for recreational vehicles (hookup sites). Each site has a table, fire
ring with a grill and access to water.
Camp sites are assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
Campground hours are variable based on day and time of the
year. According to the park’s rules, no more than eight people
and three vehicles are allowed per site. From June 1 through
November 30, the maximum length of stay at a campsite is
15 days.
Water and restrooms with free hot showers are available and
are handicap accessible. The RV sites have hookups for water,
electricity and sink water disposal.
Fishing is also available at Lake Perris, and bird watchers will
find an avian paradise as the area is a migratory stop for more
than three hundred species of birds!

WILDERNESS LAKES RV RESORT, MENIFEE
Wilderness Lakes is a flat 80-acre resort with fishing canals that
weave throughout the park.
The resort has a total of 523 sites that also includes rental trailers
and cabins, and all of the sites have water, electric and sewer.

Wilderness Lakes has a lot of amenities that can keep a camper
busy. It is a great place to bicycle and walk, and there are family
and adult swimming pool complexes. The resort also has an
18-hole miniature golf course, basketball court, tennis, a fitness
center and pickleball courts.
But if you just want the best “Wilderness Lakes” experience, try
fishing right from your own campsite. The canals are stocked
with channel catfish! Resort fishing permits are required and are
currently $8/day per person.

LAKE ELSINORE RECREATIONAL AREA AND
CAMPGROUND
The largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California, Lake
Elsinore was once a resort for the rich and glamorous from
Hollywood in the 1920s. The Lake Elsinore Recreational Area
and Campground today, located amongst walnut, pine and
deciduous trees, offers both RV and tent camping sites adjacent
to the lake and the boat launch. There are currently 120 RV or
tent sites which have electric and water hookups. There are 10
RV only sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups. There are
51 tent sites with water available.
Fire pits and picnic tables are not at every site, and fires are
permitted only within a fire ring or other commercial portable
fire pit. And don’t worry about noisy campsite neighbors—there
is a strict 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. quiet time policy for loud music and
generators.
Be sure to make reservations for the campground at least 3 days
in advance. There is a 2-night minimum stay on most weekends
with a 3-night stay on holiday weekends.
And if you get bored from all that communing with nature at the
Lake Elsinore campgrounds, you might be able to catch a minor
league ballgame at the Storm. Or you can try out skydiving offered
by a nearby airport. Now that’s some real outdoor exposure!

The Romance of
Lake Arrowhead Village

C risp air whispering through the pines, fresh snow piled on
the sides of the roads; all this leading to my first glimpse of
the bright blue lake. Yes, I was ready for our weekend getaway
from reality and Lake Arrowhead was about to deliver.
We made the drive from Murrieta up the hill in just under 90
minutes and I was surprised how easy it was even on a late
Friday afternoon. As we pulled into Lake Arrowhead Village,
I immediately felt the stress of the week fall away. The Alpine
styled buildings welcomed us with a quiet charm and promised
a weekend of relaxation in this romantic mountain setting.
Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa is situated right next to the
Village and turned out to be the perfect place to stay. The
Lobby is dramatic and has the mountain feel that you would
expect with lots of wood, soaring ceilings and a welcoming
fire burning in the large hearth. Our generous room was well
appointed with a spectacular view of the lake. It was decorated
in the craftsman style with rich warm hues and had a full sitting
area along with a comfy bed.
After settling in, we decided to go down to the hotel restaurant
Bin 189 to enjoy a drink at the bar. The impressive two-story,
glass walled wine cellar makes for a dramatic entrance and
the large stone fireplace gives the space a warm friendly glow.
The bartender mixed a perfect martini and my weekend was
officially off to a good start!
We walked over to one of the Village landmarks, Papagayo’s
Mexican Restaurant, for dinner. It was very busy with a good
mix of tourists and locals. Everyone seemed to run into
someone they knew and wasted no time to catch up on all of
the happenings. Our dinner portions were huge and even with
the full house we received excellent service.

The next morning we strolled down by the water’s edge and
stopped in at The Tea Exchange for a delicious Blueberry
Vanilla Tea Latte. We had heard the night before that Belgian
Waffle Works is the best place for breakfast and we weren’t
disappointed. Staying true to their name I had to try one of the
Belgian Waffle specialties. The Strawberry-Banana Royal had
a delectable mix of juicy strawberries and fresh bananas over
a crisp waffle. It was topped off with real whipped cream and a
little maple syrup and I was in heaven!
Lake Arrowhead Village turned out to have plenty to keep us
occupied for the rest of the day. We visited the mix of outlet
stores and specialty shops. The Pendleton outlet had a nice
selection of plaid throws, the Bass outlet was a good store for
casual apparel and Coach had a big collection of handbags. We
had a real treat visiting the local specialty stores and found a
trendy mix of clothing at Triangle and a fun assortment of dog
treats at Three Dog Bakery.
Vino100 turned out to be a good place for a break in the
afternoon. They were pouring flights of artisan beers and
boutique wines. We had a light snack and sipped the flights
while over looking the lake. We made a quick stop at Rocky
Mountain Chocolate Factory for one of their famous caramel
apples before heading back to the hotel.
We ended the magical day with dinner at Bin 189. We dined
on beautifully prepared braised Short Ribs and Seared Diver
Scallops. The service was impeccable and, as we had come
to expect with all of the hotel staff, very warm and friendly.
As we enjoyed the ambiance of the mountain lodge, I totally
embraced the romance of this world so close to home, but so
far removed from life down the hill.

The Making of a Great Wine
T he largest American Wine competition in the world Awards Warrant Red the Silver Medal This
past week, a local wine, Warrant Red, created by Kristain Story and Erik Turner of the rock band
Warrant, took the coveted Silver Medal in the most prestigious wine competition in the world, The San
Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

When you take two forces of nature and bring them together good things are bound to happen. Bringing
Napa Valley wine-maker Kristian Story together with Erik Turner of the rock band Warrant is one of

Kristian Story is a Napa Valley, California winemaker, who employs ancient winemaking techniques

When asked about the wine, Erik Turner said that the wine is delicious and by drinking it
you will become smarter, richer and better looking! “Seriously though,” he adds, “I am new
to the wine world and when I tested and mixed the wines with Kristian Story I was blown
away with what has now become Warrant Red. We think it is great that the first wine we did
has won such a prestigious award.”

As with the strum of the electric guitar and the bang of a big bass drum within a rock anthem
melody, this sexy wine strokes balance and resonates with flavors of cherries, raspberries and
mocha. The notes finish with innuendo of espresso and tobacco. Great acidity pairs it well with

A Taste of Temecula Valley
T he Temecula Valley Foundation for Excellence in Education
(TVFEE), in partnership with the Temecula Valley Unified
School District (TVUSD), the City of Temecula, and Riverside
County, will sponsor a Taste of Temecula Valley (TOTV) from
11 AM – 10 PM on Saturday, April 30, at Town Square Park,
in front of the new civic center, 41000 Main Street, Old Town
Temecula. Admission is $10 per person; children 12 and under
are free. Proceeds will benefit the more than 29,000 students in
grades K-12 in TVUSD schools by providing funding for art,
science, and technology programs.

The tasting event, which was originally scheduled for 2010,

was postponed to April 2011 when the all-volunteer committee
decided it just wasn’t ready to move forward. The TOTV
Committee gained traction after it teamed up with local
entrepreneur Charlene Keys. Keys, the publisher of Access
Temecula, a popular hard-copy and web-based guide to area
dining, entertainment, and activities, is leading the restaurant,
winery, and microbrewery recruitment effort.

Taste of Temecula Valley will provide patrons with the

opportunity to enjoy a full day of food, drink (including kid-
friendly beverages), live entertainment, and wine-related
products and art, along with specialty foods, including unique
liquors, cakes and cupcakes, and spice products. Like the
almost-30-year-old Balloon and Wine Festival, organizers
hope the TOTV will become a signature event, one that will
compel visitors to visit Old Town on an annual basis.

The Taste of Temecula Valley will be the TVFEE’s first major

fundraiser. While new to many, the event actually has a
history dating back more than 20 years. In the late 1980s,
it was championed by the Community Recreation Center
Building Foundation. That organization brought wineries
and local restaurants together to raise money for a recreation
center “for the kids.” More than $500,000 was collected and,
in 1992, construction began on the Community Recreation
Center (CRC), now part of the 128-acre Ronald Reagan Sports
Park. The CRC Building Foundation
disbanded in January 1998.

volunteers that put the event together, to
Judy Harter with a check for $1,000 - the proceeds from the
Help Ride Bike and Music Festival, of which AFTH was a
beneficiary. AFTH also operates a program called “Wheels
for Warriors,” which takes pre-owned power wheelchairs and
scooters, refurbishes them, and gets them
to service members who need them. All

programs possible. The next big event will
be the Temecula Wine and Music Festival
April 30 at Vail Lake - AFTH is the sole

the largest of the all the whale species, not to mention the largest
of all the animals known to have lived, and which can reach 100
feet in length. Blue whales remain on the endangered species
list as they too were nearly hunted to extinction in the mid-
twentieth century.

“It was magnificent,” Ford recalled. “I always feel very lucky

when that happens. Of course, it’s always thrilling to see any
whale nearby, but the sight of a blue whale just takes your breath
away.”

Romance – And Music -
Is In The Air!

W
hen the editor first asked me to write a piece on “romance”
they also asked, “would that be OK with you?” I think
their doubt was because they know me best as either a
radio personality or as an event DJ who gets everyone dancing.
What they didn’t realize was that in addition to being a romantic
myself – my wife and I just celebrated our ten-year anniversary
by renewing our vows to each other in a vineyard in Temecula
at sunset – that romantic songs play a BIG part of virtually every
live set I DJ. Put me at a wedding and there the romance flows
through the music.
Let’s face it, every good wedding should have a little romance,
but a great wedding should be full of romance and touch the
romantic in us all – even grumpy old Uncle Bernie who didn’t
want to come to the reception in the first place! So how do you
do that? It’s all about how you mix in the music. I always start
long before the actual wedding day by talking in depth about
the music with the bride and her family. Sometimes we even
involve the groom in the conversation, but let’s be honest, at 99%
of weddings it’s all about the bride, the groom is just there as an
accompaniment.
The first thing I ask to ensure that the romance won’t be
shattered at any point during the special day is a question most
DJs don’t bother to bring up but I find so important, and that’s

wants played on her wedding day is a song that brings back a bad
memory. So, quickly we get all the negatives out of the way and
compile the forbidden list. And I make a deal with the couple
that if anyone asks for those songs I’ll take the fall and pretend I
forgot to bring them with me.
Adding the romantic songs is actually much easier. First I listen
to the kind of music that they would like, then, if asked, I’ll make
some suggestions. And I’ll bring up grumpy old Uncle Bernie.
What does he like? Frank? Elvis? The Beatles? There’s always
a special song or type of music that will win him – and all the
guests over.

The same goes for the ‘special’ dances - the first dance, the
mother/son and father/daughter dances. I seen many people
shed a secretive tear when I ask the groom to lead his mother
onto the floor as Van Morrison sings “The Way You Look
Tonight.” The same thing happens when the bride dances with
her father to “I Loved You First.”
The first dance should be easier, and usually is. After all, the
song that is to be the first they dance to as husband and wife
should represent a feeling or moment that is dear to them and
one that they can happily remember for years to come. Novelty
songs are possibly the worst choice EVER! At one wedding I was
asked to play Oingo Boingo’s “Not My Slave” as the first dance.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Oingo Boingo, but having to get on
the microphone and say to two hundred people, “Ladies and
Gentlemen, please welcome to the floor to dance together for
the first time as husband and wife, Mr and Mrs (name withheld
to protect the innocent). Here’s ‘Not My Slave’.” BOOM BOOM
BOOM as the 160 beats per minute drums kick in. I have never
in my career as a DJ had so many people snap their heads around
in unison to glare at me and wonder what doctor had deemed
me safe for release from the asylum. But it’s what the bride
wanted and at the end of the day they had the reception they
always dreamed of and left for their honeymoon all smiles.
The bottom line is that it’s easy to become cynical in this age
of the casual hook-up, but if you look around you can see that
as the season changes, romance, like the flowers, is starting to
bloom around us once again and as the wedding season gets into
full swing you know I’ll be out there not only spinning those
special songs for the bride (OK, I’ll say it) and the groom, but for
all the guests. And to be quite honest, some of my best moments
as a DJ have come at the end of the night when an older lady
will come up to me and quietly say “Thank you. Tonight was the
first time my husband has danced with me in fifteen years.” That
always brings a huge smile to my face and I try and resist the urge
to ask if her husband is the dreaded Uncle Bernie!

“Not only does the USAC/CRA 410 have the ability to slide
through corners and tight turns, but it can get up to 128 miles
per hour. It gets pretty exciting, especially when the cars are
two or three across with just inches between them. The crowds
just start roaring, and with twenty-two starting positions for
each event, anybody can win.”
Despite the fierce competition on the track, it’s a friendly
atmosphere after the races. And in this era of athletic superstars
who keep their distance from fans, motorsport aficionados can
actually get the chance to meet their favorite drivers, according
to Kazarian.
“Motorsport racing is probably the only major sport where
the athletic stars are accessible to fans,” he said, adding that
drivers (who mostly range in age between 20 and 24 years old)
are always appreciative of their fans. “After the races are over,
we open the pits and fans can go meet the drivers, shake their
hands, and get their autographs.”

With over 90,000 attendees at this year’s show, NAMM is the
largest and longest-running (109 years!) musical product and
