The Caponata was the superstar of this course. The tapenade

“THE BLACK BEAST”
This rich, dense cake is a chocolate lover’s paradise. It is normally made with a ton of eggs and heavy cream and although my version is
not exactly low-cal it is way better for you than the original and the flavor is identical (if not better). The best part is that because there
is no egg in this recipe it is almost fool proof. A first-time baker can pull this off, I promise. If you have a nut allergy the crust can be
omitted, just line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper. I can’t think of a better dessert to come home to on Valentine’s Day than
fresh strawberries and a Vegan La Bête Noire.

The Making of a Great Wine
T he largest American Wine competition in the world Awards Warrant Red the Silver Medal This
past week, a local wine, Warrant Red, created by Kristain Story and Erik Turner of the rock band
Warrant, took the coveted Silver Medal in the most prestigious wine competition in the world, The San
Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

When you take two forces of nature and bring them together good things are bound to happen. Bringing
Napa Valley wine-maker Kristian Story together with Erik Turner of the rock band Warrant is one of
those magical collaborations with amazing results: Warrant Red, a delicious new limited blend of wine
from Artistwine.com

Kristian Story is a Napa Valley, California winemaker, who employs ancient winemaking techniques
to create his hand-crafted, unfiltered and unrefined wines, fermented with French yeasts. Focused
on the limited production of red Bordeaux varietals and small lots of Chardonnay, Merlot and
Petite Sirah, Kristian believes the minimalist approach preserves and expresses the true varietal
character of Kristian Story Wines. Warrant is an American Rock band from Hollywood that
experienced success from 1989 to present with five albums reaching international sales of
over 10 million. The band first came into the national spotlight with their debut album Dirty
Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, and one of its singles, “Heaven,” reached #1 in Rolling Stone
and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band continued its success in the 90’s with the 2x
Platinum album Cherry Pie and the gold album Dog Eat Dog. The band continues to tour
and record all around the U.S. today.

The goal of combining Wine and Rock is to reach people and music fans in a new and
different way. The Warrant Red wine has been a project with both Kristian Story and Erik
Turner together. The wine has brought on a different way to share their passion for music
and wine with both a new and old audience.

When asked about the wine, Erik Turner said that the wine is delicious and by drinking it
you will become smarter, richer and better looking! “Seriously though,” he adds, “I am new
to the wine world and when I tested and mixed the wines with Kristian Story I was blown
away with what has now become Warrant Red. We think it is great that the first wine we did
has won such a prestigious award.”

As with the strum of the electric guitar and the bang of a big bass drum within a rock anthem
melody, this sexy wine strokes balance and resonates with flavors of cherries, raspberries and
mocha. The notes finish with innuendo of espresso and tobacco. Great acidity pairs it well with
foods such as spaghetti, beef, and spicy dishes. Also pairs well with classic rock, good times, and
good friends. For more information or to check out the label go to: Artistwine.com

A Taste of Temecula Valley
T he Temecula Valley Foundation for Excellence in Education
(TVFEE), in partnership with the Temecula Valley Unified
School District (TVUSD), the City of Temecula, and Riverside
County, will sponsor a Taste of Temecula Valley (TOTV) from
11 AM – 10 PM on Saturday, April 30, at Town Square Park,
in front of the new civic center, 41000 Main Street, Old Town
Temecula. Admission is $10 per person; children 12 and under
are free. Proceeds will benefit the more than 29,000 students in
grades K-12 in TVUSD schools by providing funding for art,
science, and technology programs.

The tasting event, which was originally scheduled for 2010,

was postponed to April 2011 when the all-volunteer committee
decided it just wasn’t ready to move forward. The TOTV
Committee gained traction after it teamed up with local
entrepreneur Charlene Keys. Keys, the publisher of Access
Temecula, a popular hard-copy and web-based guide to area
dining, entertainment, and activities, is leading the restaurant,
winery, and microbrewery recruitment effort.

Taste of Temecula Valley will provide patrons with the

opportunity to enjoy a full day of food, drink (including kid-
friendly beverages), live entertainment, and wine-related
products and art, along with specialty foods, including unique
liquors, cakes and cupcakes, and spice products. Like the
almost-30-year-old Balloon and Wine Festival, organizers
hope the TOTV will become a signature event, one that will
compel visitors to visit Old Town on an annual basis.

The Taste of Temecula Valley will be the TVFEE’s first major

fundraiser. While new to many, the event actually has a
history dating back more than 20 years. In the late 1980s,
it was championed by the Community Recreation Center
Building Foundation. That organization brought wineries
and local restaurants together to raise money for a recreation
center “for the kids.” More than $500,000 was collected and,
in 1992, construction began on the Community Recreation
Center (CRC), now part of the 128-acre Ronald Reagan Sports
Park. The CRC Building Foundation
disbanded in January 1998.
The TVFEE hopes to
follow in its footsteps,
this time with a goal of
funding art, science,
and technology
curriculum
enhancements
in all TVUSD
schools.

“I usually take out very small groups of four to six people, there
are no noisy engines, and, unlike the fishing boats which glide
with the ocean’s rolling swells, the sailboat’s hull can actually cut
through those swells so it makes for a very comfortable ride.”

“I even have a place in the cockpit to serve wine and cheese

for anyone who wants to add a little romantic touch to their
adventure!” he said.

According to Ford, whale watchers on a sailboat are much closer

to the ocean’s surface where they can get a good look at sea lions
and playful dolphins along with the enormous gray whales and
other cetaceans which migrate along the same path.

One memorable tour brought the Bueno close to a blue whale,

the largest of the all the whale species, not to mention the largest
of all the animals known to have lived, and which can reach 100
feet in length. Blue whales remain on the endangered species
list as they too were nearly hunted to extinction in the mid-
twentieth century.

“It was magnificent,” Ford recalled. “I always feel very lucky

when that happens. Of course, it’s always thrilling to see any
whale nearby, but the sight of a blue whale just takes your breath
away.”

During the weekend of January 14, Country Review Publishers

Gregg Hassler and Don Harbour as well as magazine
photographer Randy Green attended the National Association
of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim.
With over 90,000 attendees at this year’s show, NAMM is the
largest and longest-running (109 years!) musical product and
instrument expo in the U.S. Over 10,000 of those in attendance Peter Tork (Monkees) Bryan Hitt (REO Speedwagon)
were international, representing over 80 countries. The NAMM
convention showcases what’s hot and what’s up-and-coming
in the music industry. Over 1400 exhibitors demonstrate
everything from trumpets to guitars, sound systems, lighting...
well, just assume anything you can think of that’s music-related.
NAMM is “the not-for-profit association that unifies, leads
and strengthens the $17 billion global musical instruments

music making to people of all ages.” Fun for the attendees is
that there are musician-celebrities filling the halls, as evidenced
