EVIDENCE FOR DESIGN AND THE INADEADEQUACY OF CHANCE

The phenomenon of interdependence, which pervades nature, is

compelling. Interdependence is found in everything from the
design of the universe to the ways in which organisms interact
with other organisms as well as their physical environment.
It was once thought that life might just as well be based on
other elements such as silicon but it reveals that carbon has
just the right properties for life. Carbon is made out of just
the right subatomic particles and the fundamental forces of the
universe have just the right values. The universe itself appears
to be just the right kind of universe for life, and our Milky Way
just the right kind of galaxy, so as our Solar System be in the
right location in the Milky Way and our just-right earth orbits
our just-right sun. Everything comes together elegantly for life
on earth.
Without time, space, matter, energy, and anything else that
makes up our universe, chance may not exist. Even in nature which
chance is possible, chance may still be an unsatisfying
explanation for life. Life operates by laws well-suited for its
existence and operation, but these same laws of nature seem to
preclude life’s origin absent outside intervention. Life is a
system that uses this energy to continually remake its
components. Without a complete interdependent minimal set of
molecular machinery, life simply does not happen. But components
of molecular machines are not the end of the interdependence in
living things; the machines themselves are interdependent,
forming interdependent subcellular systems, a significant number
of which are required for life. Interdependence continues beyond
organisms, which depend on their physical environment and on each
other.
Just as the universe appears from its basic forces up to the
structure of the Milky Way and beyond to be built for life to
exist on earth, life itself appears designed form the atoms on up
to be interdependent. However, interdependence is not just about
cold, harsh, mechanical necessities; it is also about beauty and
wonder. Life involves amazing machinery, but more than that, life
is beautiful and it is beautiful to a large degree because of the
interdependence that is there.
DESIGN AND THE PROBLEM OF EVIL
Design is everywhere but only to those who are willing to
see it. The unwilling ones grasps at the most reasonable-sounding
alternative explanation. Arguments that asserts “God would not
have done it that way” may invoke imperfection and evil in
nature. Options available to a thinking person range from denial
of the goodness of God to denial of His involvement may
ultimately be equivalent to denial of His existence.
IMPERFECTION DOES NOT MASK DESIGN
Even if the design of nature really is evil or fails, an
imperfect design does not logically mean something was not
designed. What Christians call evil may be the good mechanism of
creation. Belief in the goodness of the Creator requires belief
also in a fall that the creation we now see is not as it came
from the hand of the Creator, but is instead a cursed vestige of
what once was. Ultimately, interdependence is about
relationships, and all nature tells us these are both vital for
our existence and beautiful to behold. Perhaps the Creator made
nature this way to teach us something about the relationship He
wishes to have with us, whom He made “in His own image.”
This brings us to the very best evidence for a Creator God:
He became part of nature and lived among humans.

VALUES OF THE MAIN POINTS:

Most people would agree that we exist and that this means
we, and the rest of the reality, must have been caused by
something. Humans have pondered what the cause of everything
might be and have arrived at two fundamentally different
conclusions.
One arrived at a conclusion and explained that everything to
be the result of chance and the intrinsic properties of matter.
The other conclusion is that the world appears to be a
product of conscious design and it requires a Creator to explain
its existence.
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible
qualities- his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly
seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are
without excuse. Bible-believing Christians along with others
believe the evident design in nature provides compelling evidence
of a Creator.

POINTS I AGREE:
As I was reading this chapter, there are some points in
which I have agreed on. Given the example, the Evidence for
design and the inadequacy of chance. There were some points that
I have agreed such as: chance doesn’t exist without time, space,
matter, and anything else that makes up the universe and a mere
nature cannot satisfy the chance for explaining life. I agree to
this because without the elements that make up the universe,
chance doesn’t exist and it’s inadequate. Another thing I agree
about is that design is everywhere, but only to those persons who
are willing to see it. If you are not willing and you do not
agree about the design thing, you may argue with the ones who are
able to the designs. Lastly, I agree that Jesus became part of
nature and lived among man. He even died on the cross for our
sake. He demonstrated His power over nature. He can be an
intimate part of our daily experience.

POINTS I DISAGREE:
To be honest, I haven’t fully understood this chapter yet
and I think it needs a little discussion between two persons. As
I was reading this, the only thing in my mind is that I agree
with all the things that is written in the book and there is
nothing for me to disagree on. Therefore, I don’t have any point
that I may disagree.

THINGS I LEARNED:
All through my reading, I learned things that I haven’t
encountered yet. I learned that interdependence is not just about
cold, harsh, mechanical necessities; it is also about beauty and
wonder. Interdependence gives beauty in life by merely being
present.
